The hardest thing I've heard all week

So I’m on a business trip with a co-worker. Each night after work we go back to the hotel. I go to my room to take care of a health issue and he goes to his to call his family. He is really devoted to his family and even though I don’t want children I admire his dedication to his. Around 6:30 or 7:00 we meet for a meal and a few beers. He’s a good guy and we usually have a few laughs.

Tonight he is rather subdued. I don’t want to intrude, so I let it go for a while. Soon though I am starting to think something is seriously wrong and I ask him.

He says that his 4 year old got on the phone and said: “Daddy, if you come home right now, I’ll share my toys with you.”

Now we both know that he’ll be home in a few more days and we don’t travel that much and the boy will get over it, but man, that sure tugs at the heart strings.

And the thing about little kids that age is…if he told his 4 year old that he was sad because he could not come home right now, the kid would be all sympathetic about his sadness and ask him if he has a blanket or a fuzzy stuffed critter to hold, and would offer his own for when Dad comes home in case he’s still sad.

Kids are amazing.
