And if I fucking play Lorewalker Cho, don’t fucking play a minion right after. Idiots. And Trogdor. I just did one where I played those two, idiot partner lays minions out, and after they’re dead, he/she/it unloads 3 spells.
Above rank 5 I hear it gets REALLY tough. Hell, I am having problems maintaining a higher than 50% winrate above rank 11…but I confess to not being as meta-savvy as some of you guys.
I’m only 9 games in (I’m travelling this week so playtime is spotty) and I’ve got a 6-3 record. I figure I’ll take a good hard look at my winrate and matchups after 50-100 games to see if want to continue the grind.
From my very limited experience the decks/players don’t seem a whole lot better post rank 5, you don’t see too many egregious misplays post rank 12ish after all. But everyone takes a fair bit longer planning their turns and all of my opponents so far seemed to get the distinction between playing to win over playing to not lose. Every turn and every game seems a lot more important, which is part of what I like about arena and not something I’ve felt at lower ranks on the ladder.
I’ve been doing it a fair amount because I think it’s fun, and win about 80% of them. It was harder the last time they did it with the Priest/Paladin combo. They toned it down to make it a bit easier this time.
For the most part, I’m getting partners who are playing it pretty well.
Ah well, my first time out I was the moron, casting a Darnassus Aspirant into my mage partner’s secret, which for some reason I had assumed was Duplicate and not Mirror Entity.
So I built myself a Renolock deck. Only played a few games, but it’s kinda fun to play. I really like how versatile it is, it can (barring bad draws) stand against Facehunter and other aggro decks, and it has enough power to deal with the bigger decks. I haven’t faced Secret Pally or Control Warrior yet, but so far, it’s kinda fun to play.
Did you ever have one of those friends in school who would get mad, grab the offender’s shirt, cock his fist back, and THEN look to see if the principal was watching? Yeah, I have been that guy so much it’s been painful.
I think about it, play a turn and then go “Oh shit, I forgot about Lightbomb!” and sure enough, Lightbomb comes out. A lot of it is that I don’t know all of the deck archetypes well enough to know what’s coming. The damn shrinkmeister/cabal shadow priest combo gets me way more often than it should.
Well I had an interesting thing happen that I don’t remember from the last time we fought Mechazod in the Tavern Brawl. My opponent and I ended up playing 3 games in a row together which was a first. I guess we were both just quick on the draw to hit brawl again. On the first two games we got him down to the low teens and then Zod bullshitted us but on the third game when we got him down that low my partner disconnected, while Mechazod had 12 HP left, and I got the victory and my pack of cards.
From the first time we fought him* I seem to remember when that happened I got a defeat instead of a victory and no card pack. Am I crazy or just a dum-dum? Either way it was nice because more cards to dust to get the cards I want.
*I mean we in general not just this time with me and my thrice buddy.
Yes. It is so fun. In my most recent match my mage partner managed to set up +12 spell power for the turn I played Manahouse Millstorm. He then played Arcane Blast, Roaring Torch, Roaring Torch, Pyroblast to kill Mechazod from 50-something.
Is facehunter at all viable in high-level play? It feels like it loses too hard to too many decks. Tempo mage, dragon priest, and anything with Reno are liable to crap all over it. I can’t shake the feeling that it really doesn’t work that well any more.
My impression as a fairly casual player who plays a not-quite-facehunter deck is that it’s one of the best for getting out of the 20-18 pool. Others work, for sure, but I find it consistently effective. It starts to slow down for me at 15-13, where I change over to a fatigue rogue deck.
I think facehunter is viable against Reno decks. You’re killing them fast, so there’s less time to find Reno. If they do find him, you’re screwed. If they don’t, you win without ever knowing you were facing a Reno deck.
Okay… So my main decks right now are Dragon Priest and Tempo Mage (with the former having far more pricy cards in it). I don’t have Antonidas, but I also don’t have most of the really good legendary dragons like Chillmaw, Ysera, or Alexstraza. I just pulled a golden Troggzor. So two questions:
Is Troggzor worth playing? Should I just keep him? Or should I go shopping for something else?
Otherwise, what should I pick up? Ysera is looking super attractive for my Dragon deck, my mage decks are basically kneecapped without Antonidas, there’s always Vol’jin who’s pretty great in whatever Priest deck, and then there’s Sylvanas Windrunner, because, you know, she’s awesome in everything… Or I could just build half a Secret Paladin deck with the proceeds, which is also quite tempting. Any thoughts?
Antonidas would be my pick, because I rate Tempo mage as being a better deck right now than dragon priest. He’s also good for freeze mage. But generally speaking, it’s better to get neutral legendaries before class legendaries, so get Ysera or Sylvanas I suppose.
Quoting myself to say I was a bit wrong. The players post rank 5 don’t really make many more mistakes than slightly lower ranked players … but they’re much better about punishing me hard for misplays I make.
I played 30-odd games as a Tempo Mage and ended up with a 50% winrate. So I switched up to Secret Paladin and after 27 games I have a 67% winrate and I’m two stars into rank 3. Much as I think Tempo Mage is a more interesting deck, I’m gonna stick to Secret Paladin just to make the climb to legend possible in the time left in the month.
