Yeah, don’t know if it’s a 12 yet but this deck has been treating me pretty well en route to 10 wins: x.com
I used to never play 1 toughness minions; nowadays if you can get the board in your favor the fact that they die for “free” to hero powers just doesn’t matter. I’ve even played turn 1 buccanneer a couple times against mage/druid and won both of those games. Even Murloc Tidehunter has been pretty good in this deck (and Flesheating Ghoul has been great since there’s almost always something that’s getting traded off each turn).
Eh, I’d probably still go with the ethereal conjurer (or huge toad if I was really short of 2s). EC is just that good, and one set of duplicates isn’t so bad for Reno (in arena anyway). Heck. I’d probably take EC even if it meant that Reno would never go off.
Not that people should necessarily listen to me, my LoE-era arena record has dropped down to 4.25 from 5. I blame all the constructed I played last month putting me out of practise :(.
I already had two copies of water elemental, and I didn’t want to risk having two sets of duplicates. Ended up being a mediocre run with 3 wins - I only had a chance to use Reno once.
Reno makes for an especially fun arena card - it’s never expected and you tend to have unique decks anyway - but unfortunate you’ll only get it ridiculously infrequently.
Oh yeah, no one expects Reno in arena. I’ve never had him (only 31 post-LoE arena runs) and he’s only been played against me once.
Some legendaries are just unfair to play vs the type un-optimized deck you find in arena. But it’s so much fun when you get to draft them. I’m still salty about the Tirion paladin deck I had in GvG though. The only two time I got to play him was vs priests. Both of which had Mind Controls in hand .
Somebody help out a n00b here. I frequently play casual and rack up a lot of gold, but I don’t know what is the next step. I win occasionally in arena but I never constructed a deck and I don’t know why one would do that. Anybody have any tips that will get me to the next level?
The arena folks can help you out on the arena stuff. But I play casual, mostly just Tavern Brawl to complete the dailies. But I just use the gold to buy more packs to fill out the classes and neutral cards. I dust the repeats to make cards I don’t have. I’m steadily getting there. I’ve got a couple of classes already filled, Mage and Warrior, working on the rest.
I play arena once in awhile for fun but I’m still a noob and leaning about how the cards work together so I can build a good deck from the options. I rarely win.
But tonight man it was glorious in Tavern Brawl. I just won 5 games in a row, my personal best. I was doing a daily, win 5 games with Warrior, in TB. With this weeks TB of all minions get taunt and charge I picked Echoing Ooze and Warsong Cammander for my deck. I got board control early with Echoing Ooze and then was able to play WC within a few turns and just dominated.
One person was a total noob and played Mage with a lot of spells, I figured they were trying to do a daily. Two people conceded when they got to about 10 health, and I was still in the high 20s, and the other two were a little closer.
First off, make sure you’ve unlocked the first wing of Curse of Naxxramus (for 700 gold). Some time in the near future it will become impossible to start buying the adventure - only people who have already started will be allowed to continue.
Second, there’s almost no reason to play Casual over Ranked. Getting to Rank 20 at any point in the month gives you 55 free dust; getting to Rank 15 gets you 155 free dust.
The next step is to construct a deck. You want a good mana curve (either lots of low cost stuff and some card draw to keep going for Aggro or Zoo, a good balance of stuff for Midrange, or some good cards to hold off the ravening hordes until you play your big nasties) and you want to think about how you will win and how you will stop your opponent from winning (and yes, “Kill them first so they can’t win” is a valid option).
Click “Solo Adventures” on the main menu. Choose the adventure and you can buy with gold or cash if you feel like busting out your credit card (personally I got all the adventures with gold; it takes a while but it’s not that bad). Definitely get the first wings of both Naxx and BRM though before the phase out (I’m not sure on the date that they are going to implement it but I think there’s still a couple months left).
I would never pick Wisp over Huge toad/Ethereal conjurer just to avoid duplicates in the deck because of Reno. I would almost certainly pick EC, though if my early curve isn’t too hot I would maybe pick the Huge toad, after throwing in the added consideration that I can mulligan aggressively for it and allow the Reno to go off more often than not.
Of course, my last two arenas got me 1 and 2 wins respectively, so what do I know.
And you actually see fairer matchups in ranked IME. Unless your at the start of the month when everyone has their rank reset most of your opponents in Ranked will have a deck/skill level pretty similar to yours. In Casual you’ll often run up against good players just trying out a new deck in a place where they won’t drop rank.
And it’s totally okay to go online and find a deck that looks interesting and just copy it. Don’t worry if you don’t actually have all the cards in the ‘best’ version the deck you’re trying to build; you can just substitute in cards of about the same mana cost that do something similar from the basic set that you do have (Don’t have sludge belcher? Put in a Fen Creeper, or a Sunwalker if you’ve opened one). You won’t be able to build a budget version of something like Freeze Mage or Control Warrior, but those aren’t exactly n00b friendly decks to play anyway.
Anyone interested in an SDMB Arena challenge? We average up our next 10 arenas (or however many, the law of large numbers thumb rule would suggest 30, but that may be too many to sustain interest) and see what happens. We can institute a few rules for fairness if needed - buy through gold only, screenshots for proof, etc.
It’s a good idea. I’ve heard of streamers trying a 100 wins in 10 runs challenge, so a challenge to see who on SDMB can come closest to that in 10 runs seems right.
I won’t personally be participating - that’s still 1,500 gold I’d rather spend elsewhere - but I’m interested to see how it goes.
Requiring that people post a screenshot showing both their deck and their final result is a good idea. Buying in with gold isn’t really important, though - anyone going infinite will already be able to do their runs as fast as they like.
Yeah, if you don’t want to go full ‘stream your runs’ proof a screenshot of your quest log before you start your 10 runs, screenshot at the end, and a shot of each winning deck/result screen should be good enough for a bragging-rights contest.
I’d be in for something like this, even though my post-LoE arena record has dropped noticeably. I’ve still got a 3.5k pile of gold I built up from my last month’s shot at legend so I’ll still have a good chunk left over for the new expansion (whenever that launches this spring).
Another PSA: If you have not yet got at least one copy of each Classic Murloc, I recommend you get them ASAP. Along with making it impossible to buy the first wing of Naxxramus or Goblins vs Gnomes packs, Blizzard is also removing the ability to get a free Old Murk-Eye if you have each other Classic Murloc, and a pair of Captain’s Parrots if you have each Classic Pirate. Captain’s Parrot isn’t much good except for thematic purposes, but Old Murk-Eye is a key part of Murloc decks, and it’s worth getting him for free now instead of paying 1600 dust in the future.
If you do buy some Classic packs with gold or cash to get Murk-eye (or any Classic cards for whatever reason), be sure you do NOT disenchant any excess duplicates that may be on the extensive about-to-be-nerfed list.
Likely cards to be nerfed, like Savage Roar, Knife Juggler, and Big Game Hunter will dust for full value after the expansion, so if, for instance, you get an extra BGH, it will dust for 400 rather than the usual 100. Don’t use that Disenchant Extra Cards button until we see just what gets changed.
I have no reason to think otherwise. The deal has always been that altered cards disenchant for full value for a limited time following the change – never heard of there being any limit on how many copies you can disenchant.
