The Heat Is On - A Heat Wave MMP

I took a break for lunch, then worked up a sweat again, so it’s break time again. Otis the Ass chewed up my yardstick and a couple of the border supports (they’re plastic.) I had to pull out some tent stakes which work fine to support the border, but the tops are lime green, so they kinda stand out. I’ll plant some liriope next to them to hide the green. Once this break is done, I should be able to finish getting the border in place. I hope.

Otis does not like the heat. He’s crashed on the ceramic tiles of the foyer. Being black doesn’t help - the sun just bakes his coat. He seems to prefer the a/c indoors to the sun. Me, too, come to think of it.

At first I thought I was seeing a white light. Oops, its the patch. D’oh. It will be weird to see well with the right eye but blurry with the left. Thats in 2 weeks. Will it be hard to read? This is for distance, I had bifocals.

I wore contacts, which made the one good eye easier. When my father had his done, he just removed one of the lenses from his glasses.

They will do that.

Good to see you (sort of a cataract joke), Coppertone.

Break time again. I set a 30 minute timer to let me know when to break. Looking in the mirror, my face is really red - yoiks! So 30 is definitely my limit. Maybe I’ll drop it to 25. Thinking I should drop the a/c to 25 Ferrets!

Ice water!

I care not about colors. I couldnt read street or bus signs.

Evenin’

Nor exactly a heatwave here yet, but it’s predicted to be 21C by the end of the week, which is a heatwave by Scottish standards. More relevant to me, the overnight temperature has risen to the point I’m not worying about cold and even the houseplants can go outside for some summer jollies.

I am having a bit of a peeve today- after sticking stuff in the car yesterday with the plan to take it to the tip after irk today, I smugly drove past all the ‘queues expected’ signs, having dodged all the weekend craziness, got up to the gates, and… they were locked. Apparently the council have quietly cut the opening hours this year, so summer closing is no longer 8pm, but a measly 5pm. I’m sure it was expensive to keep open that late, but we already have a bad fly tipping problem, and I can’t see it helping if the options to dispose of stuff properly are now ‘during normal working hours’ or ‘huge weekend queues’. Maybe 6 closing, or one late opening a week would have been nice..?

Last invigilating session tomorrow morning, hopefully I can fit in a tip visit afterwards. If not, I plan to WFH on Wednesday, so I can nip out at lunch, even if I don’t skive off the afternoon which I’m highly tempted to do (free garden entry at one of my favourite places, someone mentioned at lunch that it’s spectacular right now).

58F at 1300, a nice relief from the heat of the weekend. We had to drive out to the lawyer’s office to apply our signatures to the will and get it witnessed, etc. Pretty painless other than trying to get driving directions from by phone. I started my trip request by saying “directions from my present location to. . .”, only to have the GPS keep telling me “you are already at your present location”. Yeah, no shit. Anyway, after several attempts, I just left off the “from” part of the equation and was able to get directions. Also, I think Wayzata, MN ought to change its name to “Wherezatat?”

Went out to check our plants after last nights wind, rain and thunderstorms. Found our tomato plant broken in half, but I’m pretty sure it will recover. The fledgling tomatoes are a loss, of course.

Fried green tomatoes?

Too tiny to do much of anything with. The plant is a cherry tomato, so the young’uns were very small.

We had record breaking heat last week. Yesterday? It snowed.

90 right now. NE Ohio.

suntan lotion, i had one eye set for distance, and the other for near. reading is no problem. if you have both set to distance, you will need glasses to read.

people do have difficulty with the two weeks between surgery. some can’t deal with the soft focus, some will have motion sick symptoms. each person is different.

hope you are seeing better today.

The only real issue I had with the two week delay was certain shades of blue and purple would flash as my brain tried to resolve the two different colors.

Those things are incredibly tough (except for cold weather) all the storm did was prune it down for you.

Almost guarantee it’ll come back more productive than before.

Toasty warm here in western Mitten State, too, and much like Otis the honorary Mumper canine I am unhappy about it. Unlike him, I do not have tile floors to sprawl on. Also unlike him, I do have popsicles, so NYAH! :face_with_tongue:

38th! It’s good to be juvenile…and foolish. My daughter will be here soon. YAY! I’m washing towels. I practiced using the grabber to transfer wash to the dryer yesterday when I washed her sheets. It was a little like lifting a dachshund with chopsticks, but hey, it worked.

The big surprise for her will be that I FIXED THE DISHWASHER! And I didn’t bend, though I did kneel (which is allowed). Turns out when she did the world’s most thorough dishwasher cleaning, she must’ve knocked the sprayer arm thingie out of the locked position, so it came disconnected. An easy fix. Of course, it does ME little good because I can’t bend to put things on the lower shelf, and I don’t want to use the grabber on dirty dishes, but I feel accomplished nonetheless.

I have not been bending. Today I dropped a Q-tip, and it somehow landed behind the toilet, a near-impossible place for the grabber. So I wrapped double stick tape around my toe, sat backward on the closed toilet, and ta-dah! My struggles and triumphs will be immortalized on the big screen in Nellie Grabberhands, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

My students once had to produce a commercial for a fictitious product. One group “invented” deodorizing insoles for sandals. They called them Birkenstinks.

I learned a new word today. I’ve always said “proctor,” but I like “invigilator” better. It sounds vaguely naughty.

Perhaps the hope is that if they’re loud enough…

Do you mean it’s not hot enough? You’re farther inland, so I know it gets a little hotter there in the summer.

This was your chance! You could’ve grabbed it like Mary Poppins!

Is it a particular brand or a type, like dark rye? Just curious. I love rye bread.

Of course you do. I mean, don’t you? I thought colors wouldn’t be much different, but I was so, so wrong. While I needed to see more clearly, seeing true colors instead of murky hues was a delightful blessing. Glad the surgery went well!

FCM, Otis and I are kindred souls. I had a black lab who was not. No matter the heat, she liked to lie in the sun, panting and limp. Occasionally she’d dig a big hole near the foundation of the house so she could like in nice, hot dirt.

After I quit my sweaty yard work and got cleaned up, I donned robe and slippers and plopped in my recliner. After a bit, I felt something weird on my neck and back.

TICK ICK ICK UCK ICK ICK!!

Little bastard got a burial at sea. OK, at septic tank rather than sea. Ick! I need to remember the tick spray next time I work out there.

It’s 78 ish here in no. Illinois. And humid. I caved and turned on the a/c but will shut it off when I finish cooking dinner. I have a stand alone a/c unit in my bedroom.

Twas 90 ferrets out there, and we cleverly decided that it was a good time to de-winterize the water feature. Shockingly good lack of damage from the freezes. I am just now, 3 hours after leaving work, getting to a reasonable core temp. We’ve got a field trip of 90 3rd graders coming tomorrow…oh boy.

FCM Make sure there are no bites. Lyme sucks says the guy with 2 kinda numb feet.

Poor Ms Peach did not get to enjoy the day of many dogs at the museum. There was Echo, Dannie, and Murph, then later came in 2 whose names I didn’t catch, but one smelled of skunk.

I think the monthly happy hour will be switched from a bar to the Science park with dogs.
