The Heat Is On - A Heat Wave MMP

Good morning.

It’s 51F and cloudy outside. The day is expected to remain cloudy, with a daytime high of 63F. Yesterday turned out to be mostly bright and sunny, albeit with a bit of cool breeze earlier in the day.

Nellie, I don’t like hot weather; I’m good with 70F to 75F, tops, but it has been a tad cool and wet around here. Also, great news about the dishwasher and the walk not tiring you out so much. I hope your chair arrives today.

BooFae, I’m glad all went well yesterday.

Lily, I hope the next couple of weeks pass quickly for you, so you can have a good soak.

Red, I’m sorry the desktop computer didn’t work out. I hope you can find a good repair place or a good deal on a new one.

We went to two nurseries yesterday. Well, one is actually a farm and produce stand, too. I found a couple of plants there, but then we went to the “fancy” nursery. We spent more than if I had gone alone, that’s for sure. Mr. Taters probably picked out more than half the plants, lol! At any rate, I have lots of transplanting to do, and I still didn’t find any Calendula! I need at least three more! I’ll have to get back to the other valley nursery to see if they’ve got it. I was also looking for some good, healthy specimens of Heliotrope, but only found small pots. I bought three, but I’ll probably pick up more.

Once I got home, I put on some grubbies, gave everything a good soak, and set about transplanting some of the stuff. One of the pots I planned to use disintegrated in my hands when I lifted it. It was a big, square wooden planter that I’ve had for years. I was moving it to a sunnier spot when the bottom and half the back just fell off, lol! Oh well.

I have baby birds! The Juncos were busily feeding their babies and could see them poking their heads out when Mama or Papa arrived. I was very careful to steer clear of the nest area, but I had to go up there to water my native and shade plants, along with the pannicle hydrangeas. Fortunately, their nest is not within the plants. Unfortunately, I’ll have to leave the weeds along the fence line until the babies fly off.

I’m currently waiting on Zeus and my son to show up. Zeus will go home sometime on Thursday, but I expect his stay here to be rather rambunctious.

For now, I’ll finish my coffee and move some doggy temptations (essentially the mail on the table and some other items) to higher ground.

Please take care of yourselves.

Good Morning, Mumpers! This whole going to bed at a decent time thing I’m trying really works. We were up and walking a little early this morning. It was hu-MID this morning, so I was glad I pulled out my lighter leggings. It was a good, if wet, walk, and we were treated to a beautiful sunrise.

The photo did not do it justice.

This morning, I decided to try just a little mascara for myself. It’s my little secret. I also made sure it was waterproof. I don’t want to end up looking like a raccoon during my power flow tonight.

I slightly injured myself last night. I ran the back of my fingers across the box grater while taking out the blender. It wasn’t too deep, but there was blood, thereby breaking Mrs Magill’s number one rule for me: The blood stays on the inside. It looks all right this morning, but I’ve added one more scar to my hand.

Mrs Magill’s parents are coming the day after tomorrow. We’ve been working on a menu. We have a chuck roast in the deep freeze, so I’ll probably make some French Dip sandwiches for Saturday, and Spike has asked me to make homemade potstickers for his birthday on Sunday. That means I’ll have to go to the Asian Market to get some Gyoza wrappers. Squeaky will be flying out on his birthday, so we’ll have to do something the night before - probably go out to the hibachi place.

Frumious - I’m glad your experience with Izzy was so positive. My parents had hosted for a summer exchange twice, both of which were positive experiences. I knew a German exchange student in High School who was very much like the European boy you’d described. Apparently, everything was better in Germany.

IOW, “Welcome to England.” “Invigilators” sounds like a superhero team.

It’s one of the last ones. I believe Raising Steam was the last one, which was really showing his cognitive decline. I couldn’t finish it.

Happy birthday, Taters!!

Morning all. Made it all the way to 6:30am today, then tried a new cereal for breaking fast (Mott’s Apple Cinnamon Cereal–it’s only so-so IMHO). Also did Preventive maintenance on my hearing aids (replaced the wax guards and the little plastic domes) so there is that. Nothing much else on the agenda for the day, should be close to 90F again, but rain is due to move in tomorrow and will be around for the rest of the week.

Frumious, so glad that you adapted so well to Izzy and she to you, I’m sure there will be tears come June.

Nut, hope you can dodge most of the raindrops and that you can find a tip that is actually open.

No weirder than we Americans. I watch a You Tube channel called “Lost in the Pond” about differences between Americans and English and get a kick out of it.

swampy, not laundry day yet (probably sometime this weekend), but I do have to sort out my stuff, I have several baskets near my bed for different items (underwear, shirts/t-shirts, jeans/towels) and sometimes it gets all mixed up, so probably need to do some sorting. Hope you get to feeling better.

Taters, a Most Happy Birthday!! Sounds like the planting is going well (with modest degrees of disintegration). Enjoy the baby birds. I used to get nests right in my front door alcove, but the nests failed 2 out of 3 times and I had to clear the dead chucks and the nest out and finally put up a barrier so it can’t be used anymore. Good luck with Zeus.

Mollie, lovely pic. My slight injuries incurred on my trip (a bloody finger and a small rip in the upper arm) have all healed nicely, hopefully yours will too.

And onward into the day. Have a good one all.

The plumbers were here at 8am and gone by 9:00, along with $300 of my money. My toilet guts were messed up. Instead of the flapper bring flat, it was wavy due to hard water. So the guts have been replaced. Ursala Kitty doesn’t like strangers in the house but she liked these guys. Catz iz weird.

Happy birthday taters!

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. The big thing on agenda today is going to the courthouse to gat tsgs. Joy!

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Good morning! 'Tis a cloudy morning and should mostly remain so. Actually, for my weather, just see Tater’s and subtract a degree or two.

I read this morning that under a new law, I’m a Canadian citizen. I knew I memorized “O Canada” for a reason! I love Canada. I think my son will be relieved, as he’s been in the labyrinthine process of claiming Italian citizenship. Under the old law, my dad, born in the US, was a Canadian citizen, though I’m not sure he knew or cared.

I’m treasuring every moment with my daughter. Today we’re going grocery shopping, and I have a hair appointment this afternoon. Then we walk Charlie. Such excitement!

She hasn’t seen her STBX since before she came out pre-op. He’s texted her, though, because he’s cared for cats and chickens in her absence. He hasn’t done much else that he was supposed to do, but that’s par for the course. Wincing in advance, I asked if she knew the sleeping arrangements at the STBX’s new family’s apartment. I mean, 3 kids, three adults–two poly, one not…it’s a modern day story problem. She said the adults each have their own room. The husband’s is a large closet. I think the woman spends all day holed up with the baby, and the guys take care of the other two kids. Theirs is a strange little world.

I’m really moved. Thanks so much. I’ll pass this along to her.

I hear you. I once lived in a house with no bathtub. My muscles ached for a full year. That first bath will be so wonderful for you! We’ll all come over to celebrate in the “Splish Splash” tradition:

Well, I stepped out the tub, put my feet on the floor
I wrapped the towel around me
And I opened the door, and then a
Splish, splash, I jumped back in the bath
Well, how was I to know there was a party going on?

JtC, I hope you get the smoking situation figured out. I imagine your hubs lighting up and passing it to you like in the old movies, very sophisticated and romantic. Why don’t they make cigarette holders for weed? I think I need a marketing plan.

Thanks! It could be here in 1-3 days, the site says. I hope it arrives before Thursday. My daughter is eager to put it together.

Hmph! What do they know? We love your cartoons 'round here.

Frumious, I also can’t believe it’s been a year already! Whoosh! I never had a student like the party animal, but I di once have a student who spoke no English. She arrived through a program the school hadn’t used before. She seemed nice, but she was totally lost. How do you study US History if you don’t know English? She had to be sent back after a few weeks.

OK, Nellie, stop replying or you’ll be here al day. Hugs all around!

Productive garden time before it got too gawd-awful hot. I moved one small lilac (I think the place I put it got too much afternoon sun), two hydrangeas, and a bunch of liriope. Pic here - I don’t feel like posting it in the thread. I generally keep my FB at Friends Only, but the occasional garden photo is probably safe, right? Oh, and I did remember tick repellent. Go me!!

I messaged FCD to see if he wants to meet for lunch - waiting for his reply. He was planning to replace the bilge pump today, which means being in the depths of the engine room. I offered to go along and hand him tools, but he declined. So we’ll see if he gets my message in due time.

I know there was more but I can’t brain right now.

I was on the 100 Slide today. Which was kinda slow. I did go help on the 300 for a bit. Afterwards, I got a jalapeno, a 6pk of Gaelic Ale and some cat food. They are painting the next building over, so I should have time for a long nap.

But they use the term “invigilator” because “proctologist” was taken.

Why not both?

Still pretty.

:bottle_with_popping_cork: :birthday_cake::partying_face:HAPPY BIRTHDAY TATERS!!!:partying_face: :birthday_cake: :bottle_with_popping_cork:
And happy planting!

I’ve done an English to English translation before.

We should go out for Timbits and Molson, eh?

To be fair it was this one:

Waited an hour and a half for eye dr. Right eye is fine for distance. I live to read and dont want to have to rely on reading glasses so were discussing a mono for the left.
They put in a contact on my left to see how they mesh.
80 today, storms, then 45.
They have a put some radon bag on my wall, select apts. Something about testing cause of future renovations.

I’m in the same boat. I had grown spoiled with my multi-focal contacts. Tomorrow, when I go in for my one month follow up, I’m going to ask about a 0 diopter multi-focal for my left eye.

Any hope that Extremely Difficult Student is close to graduating or otherwise leaving your school?

We are on vacation, and I’m sitting here in a tire repair place waiting for our flat tire to be repaired. We picked up a big screw in the right front tire. That’s twice in two weeks that it has happened. Fuck contractors who spill their screws and things all over the road.

I’m only an occasional poster in the MMPs, but I’ve always found y’all to be a welcoming bunch, so here’s what happened to me over the weekend.

Saturday was my 70th birthday, and even though I was feeling a bit iffy, I drove twenty minutes to my sister’s place in Happy Valley for some meatloaf and mashed potatoes and a movie (Treasure Planet, a lot more fun than the box office would suggest). Halfway through the food, I felt pretty much done, and my nephews and niece noticed that I was pretty sweaty for the weather. My nephew drove me to the ER to see what was going on.

Apparently, I was really fatigued, and I was admitted to the hospital overnight for observation. They also did a lot of lab work as well as EKG and CXR. They suggested an echocardiogram on Sunday, but evidently decided it wasn’t necessary, and discharged me on Sunday at about 1630.

When I got back to my sister’s house, I opened my birthday presents (a bunch of black licorice salt water taffy and a bottle of locally distilled whiskey) and prepared to drive back to Portland. But then my Prius wouldn’t start. No response at all, until I removed everything from the back and took off the cover over the 12V battery. Then it started right up.

On Monday, I took it into the nearest Toyota dealer to have the battery health checked. It was pretty low (but 13 years old), so I opted to have it replaced.

I still felt a little displaced (mostly in my head), so I just chilled for the day. It’s Tuesday now, and by 9:00 pm I think I should be ready to go back to work.

Nah, the very last is The Shepherds Crown, which he didn’t really quite finish. I owned the book for well over a year before I finally read it. It’s… a difficult ending. The remaining unfinished books were destroyed along with his hard drive by a steam roller, in accordance with his wishes.

Happy Taters day! Glad you finally made it to the nursery, I’ve been getting stressed on your behalf.

Invigilation is finished for this session up here, so you can forget about the word from my perspective for a bit. I need to remember to drop in the pay info form tomorrow- woulda done it today and filled it out during the exam, but I couldn’t find it in the rush to get out this morning.

I also have baby birds, I think, though I’ve not seen them. Some long-tailed tits are taking regular beakfuls of things with lots of legs into my pittosporum. I was planning on taking an ugly straggly bush right next to the pittosporum out, but it’ll have to wait until they’re done.

Happy birthday, Taters!

France is leaving next week? Where is it going?

Had a tick on my leg once, a few years ago. Slightly worrisome – we don’t live far from Lyme – but nothing came of it.

Currently 67 Ferrets/19 Centipedes, out of a predicted 84/29, and sunny. Yesterday’s high, IIRC, was supposed to be 81, but we only got 72; current forecast for tomorrow is 85. Summer, alas, is icumen in. :frowning:

Happy Birthday Taters

Just realized my birthday is coming up. Time goes so fast.

Happy birthday, taters! kaylasdad, get better soon, and happy birthday!

I would welcome a walk in shower as opposed to a tub enclosure. I haven’t taken a tub bath in a couple of decades. Showers are just easier and safer for me.

Happy belated birthday kaylasdad! I’m glad you checked out okay and hope that next weekend is better.

I now have Texas tags and even got them installed! After I left the courthouse, I took it where I got my inspection and asked how much to mount them. The owner told me no charge and asked how Nelson wasn’t. He had told me that his wife was a vet, so I asked where her practice was. Since it’s close by, I’ll give them a call next month to set up his physical and vaccinations.

Happy Tater Day!!!

Happy Kaylasdad Day in the past. Feel better!

We are going to get another walk in bathtub/shower combo after trump is gone. We don’t need one now and don’t want to spent the 30G it will cost to redo the bathroom ATM.

Our last place had one as well as a big walk-in shower. I mostly used the shower, but it was handy to be able to have a nice soak without trying to crawl out of our garden tub.

I do like word of mouth introductions for that sort of thing, I hope Nelson likes her

I’ve never had to worry about ticks before. I probably wouldn’t be so paranoid, but I learn from other folks’ suffering and VanGo really taught me that I do not want to experience Lyme disease.

Currently I am feeding 14 possums (I think, they all come at once and move around a lot) because they eat ticks for a living.

I also never had to worry about swimming sniks either. Mostly because folks in Arizona don’t keep their water in lakes or rivers, but that’s besides the point. Today I saw a snik swimming across the river and learned that they have water moccasins in West Virginia. My gast was flabbered once again.

Maybe drop it off before going to the dump, it would be very annoying to get the loads mixed up.

Sing it sister!!! Cover your damned load!!!

Once a co-worker and I were in the work van doing deliveries and a toilet fell off a plumbers truck and Jim hit it - no choice.

That accident report was very entertaining to write and share with management.

I’ve gotten to be an expert in 'merican to 'merican translationing.

At least you have a place to run if needed.

Don’t you kinda want to witness it all falling apart? Cause you know it is going to. Happily your daughter is out of that sordid story now which will make it much easier to point and laugh.

I’ve never heard of such a thing before but it certainly doesn’t surprise me at all. The calcium in hard water is horrible on plastics.

I can imagine how lovely it must have been

HURRAY!!! Birthday plants are guaranteed to grow well! We stopped at a few plant nurseries today but left empty handed. I’m pretty much done with the spring garden (we already have marble sized tomatoes!!!) but am still looking for inspiration for the fence line. I was thinking I wanted crepe myrtles but saw some amazing rhododendrons at the museum today that would be great privacy bushes. If I lived for another hundred years that is.

The two hour drive to the museum was all country roads and the forest was amazing. All of the trees are fully dressed in a thousand shades of green and the forest floor is splattered with color. Most of the reds are gone but the meadows are covered with small yellow flowers and there are white and blue flowers all over the sides of the road.

Folks do like their flowers out here, so many folks have blooming bushes and trees in their yards that just driving around town is a delight to the eyes.

Its almost a year since I joined the cataract club, so this is the first time I’ve been able to really see the beauty surrounding me.

The coal museum was the same as it was back when his folks took us on the tour maybe twenty years ago. I impressed myself by being able to tell Hubs what the exhibit signs said before even seeing them. It was just as depressing as I remembered, human beings shouldn’t have to spend their days working on hands and knees in the dark.

We almost didn’t go, when we got there there were three school buses and groups of kids all over. The kids were being as good as they could and were closely supervised, but it was too much chaos and motion for us so we left to go and have margaritas for courage.

The food was acceptable WV Mexican and it wasn’t covered with queso (no shade on cheese ever, but sometimes I like to taste the other ingredients as well).

I bought some postcards for the exchange - my people will get two each, hubs thought I should buy the ones with the recipe for apple butter (everyone loves apple butter, they would probably like to have a good recipe) and I wanted museum pics. Folks sign up for these sort of things because they like getting not-bills in the mail, my recipients won’t be upset with bonus cards

Gas was 4.29-4.69 depending on the area. I sure do miss ol’ sleepy Joe.

When we got home our lawn was covered with clover and butterflies so the plant-hating jerk I’m married to got on his mower and cut them all down. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

I want him to only mow when Harry mows the gully. I’m trying to convince him that he’s forcing Harry to do more that is good for him after his cardiac issues. Harry won’t back me up so its a wasted effort. Damnit.

We got .02 inches of rain today, a small thunder storm and it was in the low 90’s. There should be a little more rain tomorrow.
