Haven’t seen him post in a while…
Everything Ok?
Has the kingdom of butter melted away?
Maybe he’s become deeply involved with his abandoned glove project.
According to his user profile, his last activity was back on March 5th.
Maybe he ate it all?
Maybe he went on a diet?

He changed his name to Mangotout?
He’s OK, he just e-mailed me back and said he’s on a self imposed haitus. No details.
Glad to hear he’s alright though, he’ll be missed while he’s away.
That’s good to know. Thanks for finding out!
I too wondered this not long ago. His last post said “I should go”, which was both enigmatic and a fulfilled prophecy.
Glad to hear everything’s OK. If you’re talking to him, give him my regards.
Well I’m glad to hear he is alright, I hope he comes back soon. I miss reading Mange tout’s posts.
I’d noticed his absence too. Your second link may in part explain it though. Blake was incredibly short with Mangetout who I’ve always thought of as one of the most courteous of posters.
Yeah, I’ve been missing him. And his user name (my favorite).
Me too. In fact, he makes a lot of people’s lists in that thread.
The popular feeling is that it’s hard round here for conservatives. But I think it’s actually harder for hard-left-wingers such as Mangetout and SentientMeat. They feel they’ve said it all before over and over again, presented all their best arguments, given it their best shot. Hence the resort to one-liners, which in turn induces a feeling of shame at appearing to have abandoned rationalist principles by eschewing argument. Fighting a good fight was never easy.
Very good points.
I’m a moderate conservative and I didn’t even know Mangetout was a hard left-winger. He was one of the first posters I engaged when I first came to the Dope, but he seemed so honest and fair that his bias was nearly impossible to detect, for me anyway.
A lot of socialists in Europe struggle internally over some of the dilemmas which which they are faced. At university, I knew one fellow in particular whose family owned a beautiful property in Wiltshire, where a group of us stayed during one vacation, who practically tortured himself with the challenge posed by Michael Young, architect of the welfare state in Britain and author of The Rise of the Meritocracy, namely, that equality of opportunity was a snare and a delusion, and that equality of outcome was what was needed. His reasoning was that equality of opportunity actually makes it more difficult for equality of outcome to come about, because if everyone starts out on a level playing field then the resulting distribution of wealth, however unequal, will be regarded as legitimate.
I note that Mangetout’s average posts per day is a whopping 12.4 (and that’s now after he’s been dormant for 6 weeks or so), so perhaps he was just suffering from burnout.
This whole business about socialism and mangetout’s “hard-left” views may well be a red herring. It might have nothing to do with his reasons for taking a break. I always found him to be a solid board citizen, and will be glad to see him come back.
I miss his posts b/c up until about 30-35 seconds ago I looked at his name as ‘Mange Tout’ and would always wonder who the hell would talk up mange.
The lesson, as always, is I’m an idiot.
