Happy Independence Day, everyone! May this be the year we finally extend the basic tenets of the Declaration to all.
I’m envious of you who’ve had quiet evenings last night. Why are fireworks so much louder this year? It sounded like howitzers out there, interspersed with the neighbor’s dog crying. Poor little guy. He has no idea what he’s in for tonight. I like fireworks displays done by professionals. No thanks on the others.
I’ve decided to quit whining about my eye on here. It’s not like me. I’ve had a long-standing policy of not going into details about my health woes, and somehow I got off the rails here awhile back with that AND the lupus. Argh. Turning over a new leaf…
nut, avoiding the pubs sounds wise. I suspect we’re in for a series of partial closures and reopenings for quite some time.
sunny, sorry about the hub’s kidney stones. I think most people go to the doc for some relief from the terrible pain. He’s a trouper!
Moooom, congrats on eliminating the toilet.
mooooom, swampy, and the rest of yas that are swell-a-brating, hope you’re having a wonderful time. MetalMouse and those who are not, have a lovely, quiet evening.
I love when I catch the brats doing something they don’t want me to see them doing.
Back story.
Many years ago I had a dog named Yasmine. Some kind of terrier mix, about 45-50 pounds. She was my baby. I had another dog, Rusty, who was my Pets on Wheels dog. I went to a Pets on Wheels event, held at a rather large animal rescue/shelter and before leaving decided to take a walk though the kennels.
Bad idea for me to ever walk through a dog shelter.
So I saw Troy, originally names Red Bone, a dobie. Our eyes met and it was love at first sight.
Yasmine hated Troy from day one, and Troy wasn’t so fond of her either. They fought constantly, to the point that I thought I would have to take Troy back to the shelter.
One day I looked out the door and Yasmine and Trpy were playing, having a good old time with each other. I thought finally, and Troy could stay.
Until they saw me watching, then they tore into each other again.
I said give it up you two, you’ve been busted, and they were best friends after that.
Well today I went upstairs to get a shower, and what do I see? Adam and Echo playing together, and Adam is actually playing and not screaming his head off like he is being murdered. Busted.
Then when I got out of the shower, what do I see? The two of them sleeping next to each other on the bed. Busted again.
Fireworks have been going off every night here for the last two weeks, or more. I’m so glad my dogs aren’t scared. Ripple will bark at them sometimes, but mostly they ignore them.
Howdy Y’all! Been a fun day. We frolicked in the cee-mint pond. We laughed. We ate. We drank. We made merry. Now I am inside, all showered, and lovin’ the a/c. Life is good right now.
Sunny owie to you re the tooth and hubs re the kidney stones. Hope y’all are feelin’ better.
Cat are you bein’ subversive on the Book of Faces again!
Home. Exhausted. Stuffded. It was a nice day and the pool was a bit warm, but still refreshing. Roxy really liked being in the water, as long as someone was holding her. She didn’t nap and she’s exhausted, and daughter is trying to get her to go to sleep.
I expect I’ll sleep well also. Unless the neighborhood gets noisy tonight - we shall see.
I’ve read much of this thread, retained little. So, a la Swampy, hugs, hoorays, best wishes, healing thoughts, noogies, etc. to all. Take whatever you need and share the rest with your fellow MMPers.
I feel very sad about TubaDiva. I sent an email to Spiderman to let him know because I don’t know if he’s been on the boards at all. I looked at her FB page today and saw that a couple of months ago she posted a performance by the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz. Kopek and I saw him numerous times at a local comedy club when his tour brought him here. We also have all of his CDs and DVDs. If I had known she liked him too, I would have reached out to her to share his craziness. His comedy is irreverent, tasteless and very funny; definitely not for everyone – so of course we loved it. The best performance we saw was a free concert at South Park. He started the show by looking at the audience and saying “I see lots of kids here. My show is not meant for kids and I won’t change it. You have been warned.” That stage also had a concert grand piano (he normally uses an electric keyboard) and he fell in love with the piano and just sent crazy on it.
I’m heading out to Knoebels tomorrow to meet up with some friends for a couple of days. I’ve been going there since 1997 and this will be the first time I’ve ever gone without Kopek. I expect it to be very heart-wrenching and I am reserving the right to stay far away from his beloved bumper cars and haunted house because I know I’ll keep looking for him. The cat will go into storage tomorrow morning and I’m curious to see how that goes.
Behave yourselves and use your coasters or you’ll have to answer to FCM! I’ll be using coasters of a different kind.
Evening all. Nappage completed and I took a little ride about the area this afternoon, traffic is rather sparse, think people are staying home to celebrate the 4th. Fireworks show has been called off, so any bangs will be locally produced.
Owl, enjoy your trip to Knoebels and focus on all the good times you and Ruble had there. And my coasters are being employed.
Nellie, it’s not whining…you’re just letting your friends know how you’re doing. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when you’re whining…
Sari, nice story and loved the Adam and Echo ending. We’ll see if they try to keep spoofing you…
Cats, it takes that long to grow some worms??
Cookie, maybe first-time renters or they want to test out ideas for their (eventual) house.
OK, need to call Brother, track the Southwest Chief, and the first rounds of fireworks just started. Oh joy.
One bleeding abrasion, one bruise, one puncture wound, and a blood blister later, I have demolished the shed roof, built new trusses, and ate grilled rib-eye with corn on the cob and wine for dinner. Oh, and took some ibuprofen.
Ridiculous quantity and volume of commotion outside. Some of it will sound like it’s right at my door, but when I go outside, it’s not even inside the fence around my complex. The cat is not amused or impressed and I have a headache.
Greetings from the western front. Under heavy artillery fire from all sides. No possible retreat. Repeat: no retreat. Send reenforcements. Also doughnuts.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 72 Amurrkin out and TWPTB say light rain but no rain, with a predicted high of 88 and a fifty percent chance of rain for the day. We shall see. Supposed to be rainy the next three days. Fine by me. The big plan of the day is virtual deheathenization. Today has been declared a forage day should the need to feed arise. We have all kinds of sammich makin’s and chips. We cooked and et big yestiddy, so today is slacker day.
Sunny forgot to mention about your sis yestiddy. Hope all goes well and please keep us informed.
Miss Owl have fun at Knoebels and remember the good times you had with Ruble there. It’s OK to not do the things that would be too much.
FlyBoy I say not too shabby on the injury front. I would probably be in the ICU lookin’ like I spent the day fightin’ lions, and tigers, and bears. OH MY! I second VOW, a tetanus booster would not be a bad thing at all.
MetalMouse I picture you wearin’ a conductor’s hat and blowin’ one of those train whistle thingys when you talk about trackin’ trains. It amuses me.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Sunday Y’all!
Lots of fireworks close by last night but they were over by ten o’clock. I have considerate neighbors.
Such a weird night… I heard very few booms and fell asleep early because I was flat-out beat. Then I woke at 2 (dammit) and was up till a bit after 4. From there, it was on-and-off sleep with bizarro dreams till I finally gave up at 7. ugh.
I have tended the critters and watering the yard has commenced (I think this will be the last week I bother, unless we have a long, hot, dry spell.) I need to get the give-away terlet out to the driveway to be picked up. And since it’s walk day, I’ll be taking a turn about the neighborhood also. My only other plan is to watch Hamilton. Supper shall be forage.
flyboy - your construction tale reminded me of the summer of '97. FCD and daughter had already moved to Virginia and I was waiting for my new job there to start, so I was still in FL, living with friends. A coworker was building a garage and since I had nothing else going on, I offered my help.
As far as I know, the garage is still standing.
Mor… uhh… afternoon all! Have read, but not retained; the coffee wasn’t strong enough this morning.
I like fireworks, but July always seemed like an odd month to set 'em off to me- I mean, it’s when it’s light late and fireworks look so much better in the dark. You should have rebelled in autumn or winter, IMHO.
Was kept awake pretty late by the loud drunks going home (and the wind, which was really loud last night). I’ve not missed them.
Anyway, it looks to be dry here today and mostly NOS, so I’m getting all the laundry done so’s it can go on the line. Bets on unexpected rain? I’m baking some overnight sourdough as well shortly, to temporarily complete the illusion of domestic goddessness. I may even do some vacuuming later.
I live in a state where fireworks in the hands of civilians is illegal.
Then why did last night sound like downtown Baghdad in the middle of Shock and Awe? We are surrounded by woods and fields, with not that many houses along the roads to the over 55 community I am in.
My son reported that the city he is in was having problems with the local ferals dropping professional sized packs in the middle of the street, lighting them, and the neighborhood bombardment began. One of his neighbors is a cop, and she said that it seemed the city was on fire. Great…
‘Mornin’ y’all. Hope everyone got some sleep. It was “downtown Baghdad in the middle of Shock & Awe” here, too. Fireworks are totally legal to any drunken idiot until 11:45 p.m. for that week and I’m surprised nobody set our tree-filled neighborhoods on fire last night.
I’d gotten home from irk around 630, had a meal & shower, and was dead asleep an hour later, guesstimating that I’d nap a bit and be awoken by - and in time for - the show. Worked out well, since the corpse of a deaf man wouldn’t have slept through the racket. Wandered outside in my bathrobe (keepin’ it classy!) and could see three or four different displays through the trees, plus a short burst of bottle rockets and such from a house right down the block.
I expect irk to be quiet and relatively calm today, since most folks are hung over^ or traveling back home today. Friday was insanitypants, with the line stretching around the building and into the street before we even opened and never shortening till close that day. EVERYone was stocking up for the weekend!
^ what business we do get today will likely be driven by people seeking hangover relief medicine. Crap, maybe not so quiet after all!
My sainted mother is on her way - stayed in St. Louis last night so they’ll be thru Illinois by today. Ugh. I’m looking forward to seeing my dad, but her … not so much. I’m sure she’ll bear many gifts, some of which will even be welcomed, and interspersed between judgy comments and general bitchiness will wrangle my stuff out of chaos.
Maybe I’m worrying too much. (HA!!!) They’re both getting old - she’s gotta be slowing down by now. Right?
Well, Nikki sends along comforting purrs and fluffy snuggles to whoever needs them. I suppose I should round up some sort of breakfast, prolly eggs or a bowl of cereal, and there appears to be time enough to water my plants. Then it’s off to rejoin the local drug dealers.
Tonight I foresee frantic last minute cleaning e.g. hiding the pipes and stash tins.
I’m current on my tetanus vaccine. I get an annual physical, and my PCP tells me what shots I need.
So anyway… The easy part is done. The old roof was pretty far gone, and it wasn’t that difficult to wreck it. Building the trusses was just a matter of cutting pieces of wood and nailing them together. Today I’ll attach the trusses to the walls. I’ll see what kind of rafter ties I can find, and it should go well. The ridge beam should nail right in.
Now comes the hard part. The back yard slopes. Both of my knees are bad. I’ll have to use a straight ladder (instead of an A-frame ladder), and I’m not great on those. So nailing on the side rails and the fascia boards is going to be problematic. Then I’ll have to put on the plywood. Then I’ll have to put on the roofing material. I wish I had a couple of helpers.
