The "I Love Cold Weather" Thread

I grew up in a wintery region, lived in a no-season place for a long time as and adult, and am back in a four-season region. This thread is to celebrate my return to “real” weather!

Reasons I heart cold weather:

I know that time is actually lapsing because the seasons change

It’s cool to see my breath in the air

My dogs can romp and romp without overheating

One of the most wonderful things in the world is to go for a long walk in the snow at twilight and return to a warm house for hot chocolate

Skiing/sledding = more hot chocolate

I get to wear my sweaters, coats, and cool LLBean Pac boots

No yard work for at least four months!

Cold weather is conducive to reading, writing, and other intellectual indoor pursuits

It reminds me of being a kid in very evocative ways

Stay tuned for my February thread: “Winter Sucks!”

You forgot skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, the look of snow on nekkid trees, wearing big puffy mittens, the sound of snow falling, the clarity of the stars on wintry nights and about a million other things!

Both of you forgot no bugs!

I like everything about winter except the long gray stretches without fresh snow and the dryness produced by steam heat, which produces painful cracks in my feet and makes my saxophone and clarinet pads leak.

Me too. All of that… plus the smell of burning fireplaces in the calm night air.

Excuse for winter comfort food. A crockpot filling the house with the evening’s dinner all day long. Reasons to cuddle even closer with that hot little body next to you.

Agreed.

I just LOVE SNOW!! I love winter. It’s why I live where I do.

The more the merrier! It’s so much FUN! It’s soft, it’s fluffy; you can paste someone with a snowball if the temp is just right! Trudging through the fields in a three-foot snowstorm is a form of Zen.

A few years ago, (2 or 3) we had a decent cold snap. Temps (at night) went into the -15F to -25F range. Not crazy low, but pretty cold for northern Vermont. (The coldest recorded temp I’ve noted here is -35F, FWIW)

I suited up for a night walk. Snow suit; polar gloves; thermos of hot chocolate. The dogs, ever pestering for a walk, didn’t budge from in front of the woodstove, where they slowly baked their backsides.

I ventured out into the night, the snow creaking under my boots. There is a field out back, five minutes out, where I’ve set up a log seat. I went there and sat and thought for a few minutes. The air was bracing; frigid. Frost formed on my exposed hair, my eyebrows, encouraged by my breath.

Nothing moved or made a sound. Nature at it’s purest.

Ruthless; cold; unforgiving. I sat there for a long spell, thinking…

Then left for the warmth of hearth and home (and possibly a snifter of warm brandy )

Hard to appreciate, if one has only experienced oppressive heat and humidity.

I’ve often been told that I was born in the wrong place. I’ve lived in LA all of my life, and I get uncomfortable whenever the temp reaches above 70 degrees. The few rare days I’ve spent in truly cold weather have been heaven-sent for me. I’m still like a little kid whenever I get to play in the snow. My wife gawked at me when we traveled to Denver earlier this year and I romped around in my shorts in 30-degree weather.

So for all of you who are about to experience truly cold weather, I envy you. Enjoy it for me, and if you can spare some, send it this way, please?

Grrr…

I hates bugs MOST of all. Thanks for reminding me.

(No worries until about------- April.)

And, I must add, Christmas day won’t be sunny and 80 degrees – that’s just perverse!!

Some of my favorite memories are of Boxing Day lunches outside on my parents’ patio with the family. Then, the next day, heading back to the cold hinterlands where I was going to school. The contrast between the two was always sharp, and it made me appreciate each one more. Until, of course, I got to Chicago and had to make that cold trek through the snow from the Red Line station to my apartment, cursing cold places from the depths of my soul!

Autumn is my favorite time of year. I like Spring too, but here on Lawn Guylandt we haven’t had a decent Spring in years.
I love it when it’s cool enough for a jacket or sweater but warm enough to not need gloves. I love the smells of autumn and even tho no one does it anymore because of all sorts of clean air ordinances, I can still smell burning leaves from childhood.
Snow, I can do without. Unless there’s a way for it to stay ONLY on roofs and lawns. I hate driving in it, I hate walking on it. (altho, some of my best photos were taken during blizzards)
I’m not a fan of Hot & Humid either. I’d love it if it were between 35 & 70 (farehnheit) all year long - only rain between 1am and 5am, and only snow the last week of December.
Anyone know where I can find that climate?

Hitting highway speeds on telemark skis.

Being able to snuggle with your sweetie without one of you saying “Get off me! It’s too hot for that!”

I love cold weather too. Especially snow  Unfortunately, we’re going into summer now and I haven’t seen snow in 5 years. Fortunately, it looks set to be a cool summer this year (for once!).

Whoops, deleted my second paragraph. I like walking outside and feeling the cold air on my face

I’m just glad that it has cooled down. I thought I was going to die during my summer in Dallas. At least there are a few cold day here in the winter. But, I do miss the leaves changing.

Yes. Absolutely.

How many of you just like the cold weather? Leaving out the warm house to return to?

I adore the cold. I’m actually a little disappointed in how damn warm Seattle turned out to be, it’s always so hot here!

My husband took me up to Leavenworth today, up in the mountains. That was nice and brisk. We’ll be going there for Christmas, and he’s promised me some snow!

I’d rather be too cold than too warm. I can always bundle up, add more cushy pillows, big comfy sweatshirts, fluffy slippers, more blankets, more hot cocoa, more sitting in front of the fire, more snuggling up… but when I’m too hot? Blech. Don’t come near me. I might be taking it all off, but I won’t be in the mood for anything. And I have claws.
