The "I'm sick of winter" thread

This December was the 14th snowiest on record here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was also unusually cold–sub-zero with sub-zero windchills. That’s more typical of January. January is the only month I truly hate most winters, and now we’re basically doing it twice this year. I just read we’re in for significant snow tomorrow. In fact, I looked at the radar and there’s a big mass of blue approaching now, so I think it’s worse than expected.

Aaaaarrrrgh! I am so tired of snow and ice. To top it off, when I got home from work and took one step into the bathroom, I discovered the carpet was soaking wet. Turns out the toilet is leaking. The toilet with the corroded shut-off valve that you can’t use. I’ve got a call in to my plumber, and hopefully he can come on Monday to fix the leak and replace the shut-off valve.

The good news is that it’s a slow drip, and I’ve positioned a bucket such that there won’t be a flood, so I don’t have to shut off water to the entire house. The other nice thing is that the carpet is just one of those little rugs you toss on the floor and not wall-to-wall carpet. So it could be worse, although the water did damage the vanity.

But still. More snow? It’s way too dang early in the winter to feel house-bound and sick of winter. Housebound with a dripping toilet. Plink. Plink. Plonk. Plink. Plonk.

I’ve seen enough rain. This is a desert, not a rain forest. And what’s up with this 60 degree stuff? Low 60s!

Enough!

I’m a bit tired of it too. I posted elsewhere about the weather in general and my hellish drive down to Coos Bay. Thankfully the snow was melting when I returned Sunday. I was disappointed to see more snow Thursday morning. Or was it Wednesday? Only an inch, but I’m getting tired of it. It’s been a cold winter so far (for here), but the 10-day forecast predicts temperatures in the 40s next week.

I got an email from my best fiend in New Orleans today, and he said it was pushing 80.

PS: Carpet in the bathroom? Sounds unhygienic.

We had a blizzard on New Year’s Eve, and got a lot of snow. Today, we have a heavy snowfall warning, and are expected to get 5 to 10 centimetres of snow. Plus there’s a windchill warning, and it is supposed to be -42 celcius with the windchill tomorrow.

I think its time for my annual rant about why did my grandparents choose to move here. They could have moved anywhere in the British Empire, but they chose to come to Saskatchewan.
(was the free land really worth these winters???)

Don’t they sell those small rubber-backed carpets for bathrooms in your neck of the woods? My floor is covered with some kind of vinyl, but I have a throw rug in front of the sink and in front of the toliet to keep my feet warm in the winter. They’re easy enough to toss in the washer and dryer, which is what I did tonight. It’s just water dripping from the tank, so it’s not gross or anything.

Dale…sure, just rub it in. Wimp.

Katie, you couldn’t pay me to move to Saskatchewan! It’s not just the cold. It’s the darkness. At least we’re past solstice now.

Ah, a rug. When I hear ‘carpet’ I think of carpet that covers the floor.

Ah, c’mon out to my house, we’ll drag you behind the 4-wheeler on a tube and get you really drunk, have you fall down a spear hole.

And you can’t hate winter until after February 28, it’s in the rulebook.

You’re one of those folks who’s still running around in shorts and a t-shirt, aren’t you? :stuck_out_tongue:

Snow-tubing reminds me of this video I stumbled across on YouTube:

I’m sure I will regret saying this, but I say, “Bring on the snow!” We’ve already had three overnight “wintery mix” storms, which, IMHO, are far worse than snow. Christmas Eve morning was horrible. A quarter of an inch of clear, glaze ice on every surface – including the front and back steps, which was not good when I was trying to transport a pet carrier full of 20 lbs. of freaking-out cat to the car to get him to the groomer.

I can’t start hating winter yet. It’s too soon. Just knock it off with the ice already.

Chicago wind sucks mudwater. I can stand the cold, but the burning icy wind just kills me. It’s inhuman!

I managed to miss the record snowfall out here in the desert by being blissfully tucked away in the tropics, but I’m sorta sick of the short days. I can deal with the cold, but I hate the damn dark.

My tan is going to fade away into nothing, I just know it. :frowning:

No, we live on a big lake, this is more what it’s like.

or this

I’m on on the thread because I hate winter, but I can’t compare to your post. I just don’t like the fog and the dark.

Come on spring and summer. I LOVE summer.

I’ve been spoiled living in Calgary; sure we get weeks of -25ºC temperatures and some snow (enough to make driving and getting around miserable), but we can count on a chinook to show up after a couple of weeks of cold. Okay, chinook, we’re ready. We’ve had four weeks of bitter cold and snow almost every day - I want my warm weather, and I want it NOW! There’s no feeling in the world like when the chinook blows in - it feels like a blessing from the gods.

If I were there, I’d fix your toilet. I just fixed mine. I seem to be learning plumbing one disaster at a time.

But since I’m not there, I’ll just share your winter misery. I despise the cold.

We’re just getting started and have three whole months to go, with the worst come (in spite of record snowfall already). I must be getting old, I HATE driving in the snow (though you’d think I’d be used to it by now). The worst, I agree, is ‘icy mixed precipitation’. Freezing rain and sleet, indicated by the dreaded pink coloration on the map on the weather report.

I learned after I bought the house and tried to fix a leaky faucet that I’m good at creating one plumbing disaster at a time. Now my repair skills consist of buckets and dialing the plumber.

Well, crap. Just looked outside, and there’s another inch of snow. And it was doing such a good job of melting before!

I am trying not to be sick of it. I mean, it’s only January. I have two full months yet. We have had three snowstorms already. One of them dumped two feet on us. That was the biggest one.
But I don’t think that I would be annoyed and tired already if it wasn’t for the darn ice storm that knocked out power for 200K people. We lost power for six days. I’m still bitter.

Average high for today here: 38. Expected high today here: 57.

So far global warming is just the ticket around here. Extra rain, but not too much, and warmer winters. And real estate that didn’t boom much & so hasn’t busted much.

Shame about the supervolcano though.
