The Iron Man Movie (no spoilers)

Thank you.

And yeah, I caught that too. The Stan Lee cameo is pretty damn funny as well.

Saw it today with my son…HELL of an entertaining flick. I enjoyed it a lot. I think it has to rank right up there with Batman Begins and X Men 2 as the best superhero movies.

I’ve never seen terence Howard in a movie, so his voice really, really took me by surprise. I was expecting a deep, well… black man’s voice, not the early-eighties Michael Jackson thing. Really pulled me out of the movie. Like if you didnt know what Bruce Willis sounded like, and he spoke like Justin Timberlake.

Other than that, loved the movie. The Iron Man/ Stark ratio could have swung a little more towards Iron Man… even just one itsy bitsy montage of Iron Man kicking worldwide ass for two minutes would have swung it for me.

And for the love of all that’s holy, why is Foggy Nelson driving a limo? Did the law firm go belly up?

Not many people know this, but Tony Stark actually

Pissed on Obediah Stone’s rug. And that rug really held the room together, man.

Which explains much of film’s plot.

That wasn’t Tony, that was The nihlists, I mean the terrorists, hence his later actions in the movie.

Tony merely schooled him in bowling. And as we all know, you don’t f*** with the Obediah.

Me, I kept waiting to see Obediah playing an 80’s arcade game, or even a round of frisbee, it would have fit with him riding around on a Segway.

Another question, this one about Stark’s lab:

Did anyone else notice that the clumsy robot that Stark is constantly suffering (the one that keeps gassing him with the CO2 extinguisher every time he smacks into a wall testing the jump jets) is the same one from the picture montage at the awards ceremony? I had been wondering all through the first film why he kept that robot around if it kept messing up, but now it makes sense.

Not really a spoiler, but fun fact if you pay attention at the intro: The guys riding with Stark in the Funvee are Air Force Security Forces (formerly our military police, now I understand they do lots of Infantryish stuff too alongside the Army). The lady driving the humvee points out that she’s an Airman (as opposed to a Soldier), but other than that, they’re wearing the new USAF tigerstripe camo instead of the Army’s blocky digital pattern, along with the inverted chevron ranks on the sleeves that we Airmen wear.

A question for the parents in the thread - anything in it that 9-12 year old boys shouldn’t see? I know it’s rated PG-13, and that’s usually my cut-off, but if it got the rating just for comic-book style violence, I may take them to see it.

There’s one sex scene, early on. Everyone keeps their clothes on, but the lady in question is quite… frisky.

The sex scene was mentioned, but aside from that, there were a couple "son of a bitch"es but no very serious profanity that I can recall. I took my 11 year old son to see it and didn’t experience any “squirmy” moments other than the sex scene (which was fairly mild) and the subsequent “wake-up-clad-only-in-sheets” of the female reporter.

I’d like to see Pepper’s shoes…

…behind her ears!

Badda-ching.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Fantastic movie, I saw it Friday and Saturady night, I haven’t done that since Star Wars came out.
It hit all the right points and I thought Robert & Gwyneth’s acting was much better than I ever would have expected from a superhero movie. The playful banter of the movie was as enjoyable as the action scenes, somewhat moreso on reflection. Whoever missed the scene at the end of the credits missed a half-full theatre of fans screaming and yelling.

and, best Stan Lee cameo evah!

I took my 9 year old last night and was okay with the choice. There’s also a little more military style person-on-person violence (as opposed to Hero/Villian stuff) than in some films including a group of people getting hit with flamethrowers. Not real graphic but it struck me as more “violent” than Spider-Man and the Green Goblin punching one another.

Oooh, a fellow Airman. I knew there were a couple of us on the board. If you don’t mind, where ya stationed and what do you do? And for extra cool points, officer or enlisted?

I want to see your girlfriend in Pepper’s shoes.

I mean, I’m sitting there, totally getting off on the movie, grinning like a kid at that awesome suit, and in the middle of it, I’m like, “Damn! Look at those shoes!” They made her look seven feet tall, and in a good way. I think they should be de rigueur whenever beautiful women lead groups of federal agents into dangerous situations.

I’d been a little concerned that Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal might conflict with the image of Tony Stark I’d had a kid, but though he was different, I think he made Stark more interesting. He owned that role. Not a spoiler, but I think the difference between Iron Man and the other superhero movies was that he was a functioning adult, with an interesting personality, before he decided he had to be a force for good. Those kids in the other movies were too one-dimensional in their goodness (excepting Wolverine, 'natch).

Downy’s been quoted as saying that he’ll be happy to do 15 sequels.

Please tell me that was hyperbole. I’d be happy with a kickass, high-quality trilogy.

The person I saw it with refused to stay to the end of the credits. And while the movie was good, I’m not going to see it again in the theater.

I hate going to movies with other people.

Neither had the person I saw the movie with. She kept asking if he was supposed to have been gay.

You have no idea. She’s 5-foot-9 as it is and has a penchant for 3, 4, and even 5-inch heels.

To the surprise of nobody, Marvel said this morning that a sequel is planned for 2010. They also plan to release Thor in summer 2010, and two Avengers movies are schedueld for 2011.

Wow, can a Forbush-Man movie be far behind?

Hmmm. Hulk movie. Thor movie.

Hulkbuster armor.

Thorbuster armor.

Hmmm.

I went to see it this morning and had average expectations going in.
All I wanted was to see Robert Downey Jr. do well and a some kind of a plot.
I got that and so much more.

It probably helped that all I knew about Tony Stark was he was Iron Man. I vaguely remembered a chick in the story line, which brings me to Gwenyth Paltrow she shows she is good at the banter, but the final scene with her, after years of women kicking ass and taking names in movies, she just stands there like a freakin’ stick. Sarah Conner would have owned the scene. But I digress.

Her shoes were killer, but in a way, it made me think she was going to twist her ankle at any minute and have to be rescued. Just like a bajillion film cliches of past.

What I really enjoyed was the process of Tony Stark creating and making mistakes. The technology at his fingertips is amazing.

Obediah had an awesome line when he was yelling at some underling, " Tony Stark made it with scraps. In a cave. It really nailed the level of Tony’s genius out of the park.

What kinda threw me off what who Obediah was. I couldn’t put my finger on who it was until midpoint of the flick. The Dude Abides.
I am definately taking my 10 year old and 8 year old to see this. I think there was one swear word. No blood (except when Tony is attacked in the very beginning.) and a twenty secondish mostly clothed fall on the bed and paw at each other sex scene. Standard homogenized violence and the stereotyping of terrorist, who are not all arabs/muslim, but a mish mash from all walks of eastern Europe & Central Asia, which I thought was a nice touch. Bad guys are in every society.

They might squirm a bit at the length it takes to actually get to see Iron Man, but I think the payoff is worth it.
Robert Downey Jr. You did awesome.

I really liked it. I know the early bon vivant Tony was basically to show how shallow he was, but he seemed like a hoot to me:

“No no, this is the Fun-vee. You’re back in the Hum-Drum-Vee.”

I thought the least realistic element was Pepper Potts’ shoes. Yes, yes, sexy as hell, but as a woman, you watch it and think no WAY could she run in those things! and I bet her feet are KILLING her! At least this woman does.

I liked it a lot. Not enough to go see it a second time at full ticket price, but it was definitely a fun movie to see.

ETA: And Robert Downey Jr. has been working out. Rowr.
