The Janis Joplin Tree. Feed me information

Millions,

I’ve heard tell of a “Janis Joplin tree” somewhere in San Francisco’s Golden Gate park. My google-fu, supposedly red belt level, has come up empty.

Anyone have any details? Type of tree? Location? History? By the by, I live in the City, so I’m fairly familiar with the park.

As always, I await your genius.

When I scanned the title I thought it said Janis Joplin Free Thread.

[inapropriate] I’m giving it away. Her corpse, I mean. [/inapropriate]

Janis Joplin’s tree next to Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park!

It looks like this. Other than that, I got nothin’.

I don’t know anything about the history of the tree, but this is a picture of the Janis Joplin Tree. According to the page, it’s “next to Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park!”

My search also turned up a thread on the BritishExpats board that mentions the tree (post #5):

What a gloriously scraggly little tree.
Do we know why this is her tree? Or is there any clue as to location?

Slowly, but surely. (Thanks Squink)

Whoops. Wrote too soon.
Hippie Hill, for my & everyone’s info, is where the park deadends before Haight Street. Which, of course, makes perfect sense. So there’s the precise location…more of less.
