So I’m sitting here looking over thread titles and I see something about Hong Kong. Suddenly, unbidden, the theme from the late-'60s cartoon popped into my head:
“KING KONG! You know the name of KING KONG! You know the fame of KING KONG! Ten times as big as a man!” (I don’t remember the rest of the lyrics.)
Weird, eh? I mean, why not “Hong Kong Phooey! The number one superguy! Hong Kong Phooey! Quicker than the human eye!”?
Which reminds me of Hong Kong Harbour, which I liked to say when I was four. Also when I was four and living in Japan I liked to say, “Tokyo Tower! Tokyo Tower!”
You complete bastard! I’m gonna have that NFBSKing song in my head all day now.
Personally I thought it was a pretty lame cartoon, from the Hanna-Barbera cheap school of animation. As a kid I always wondered if they mean ten time as big as a man linear or by volume? Now of course I realize if they meant volume that would only give you a Mighty Joe Young size ape. Pretty freaking big as monkeys (I know, I know) go but no K.K.
King Kong, you know the name of
King Kong, you know the fame of
King Kong, Ten Times as big as a man.
One day a boy, too young to know the danger
made a friend of this giant fearsome stranger
But this mighty ape is a friend of man
So says the legend, the legend of…
King Kong, etc…
(Oh god, I can’t believe I remember this, but it popped into my head too, not long ago).
I kind of liked it when I was a kid. It was on right before or after Johnny Quest, and seemed to fit in well with that theme.
