The Labo(u)r Day MMP

Slow at irk today. Just as well, given how tired I am. Some moron decided to park on the other side of the fence dividing my apartment complex from the neighboring shopping center with boom car booming loudly enough to wake me and distress the pets. For 45 (bleep) minutes. I am definitely making an early night of it, with a part dose of Nyquil and of course Mel to help me along.

My pillow is currently touring the dryer on air fluff, since it’s gotten flat and squashed. Should probably get a new one at some point, it’s been a few years. Finding one that suits a side sleeper with a touchy neck is not easy.

The air is annoying visible, with taste and texture, and the sun is red in Sacramento. The pyro-idiots were well south of here, but there are still enough fires in Northern CA to explain the lack of air quality. At least I’m not in a hurricane-prone area, since we’re already up to our R for the year as of today. Four more (S, T, V, W) and we’re going to have to use the Greek alphabet.

Went out for a long drive this afternoon, after all. Stopped at a roadside produce stand, and paid the princely sum of a whole dolla’ for a buttload of me-sized onions, and another dolla’ for several of the greenest, hardest tomatoes they had.

Fried Green Tomatoes - first one was dinner tonight. It was surprisingly filling!

Did I say they weren’t allowed? Just that if they weren’t doing the posted 70 mph speed limit, please stay in the slow lane.

If I wanted nit-picky, I would post outside of the MMP.

Not a long ramble at all-I enjoyed it and I’m glad my girlhood home was nice and neighborly to you. Good peoples there. If it was a game between the U in Ames (Iowa State University-about 110 miles away) and the University of Iowa (~18 miles away) I’m glad there wasn’t a brawl in the pub-those two teams have had an intense rivalry since 1894. If you were downtown and heard trains at night, most likely what they now call the Double Tree by Hilton. I lived 4 blocks from there, ice skated on the slough between them. I have the 55yo scar splitting an eyebrow to prove it. Great story about the beer pitchers-haven’t we all skipped out for a few minutes from a reception? Especially for The Game to end all games for the season🏈? I would of. Hard to believe the bride didn’t check the football schedule before picking the date. No explaining some people.

That’s the truth. The right side sleeping pillow is an eternal search for me. Usually end up with down cause it seems like it conforms to my neck better and then is more supportive. Besides, I’m a Czech girl and it’s a rule you have to sleep with down. The whole pillow issue took on new dimensions 2 years ago after a whiplash injury. Takes a whole of fluffing to get it right each night now. :sleeping_bed:

You posted one of yours, I replied with one of mine. Seemed fair.

Interstates are freeways.

But you are correct, freeways have controlled access, and only certain vehicles are permitted.

Cars/pickups/RVs pulling trailers are supposed to stay in the right-hand lane. So are semis. BUT…they are allowed to pass slower traffic.

The big problems arise when the POVs pulling trailers aren’t familiar with how the whole shebang handles, and the driver figures out acceleration is much s-l-o-w-e-r when pulling a trailer.

Especially on a hill!

Most semi drivers are considerate. We’ve encountered some unspeakable ones.

I-40 has HEAVY truck traffic. And Mr VOW has driven in some instances where it takes two hands and a foot on the steering wheel to stay upright!

I do my part by yelling obscenities.

This was the tone of your post. Not mine. Which words belong in The Pit?

@missred
Let me apologize about my crankiness on Interstate speeds. I was rear ended in the right hand lane at 60 miles an hour, on the Interstate, by a hotheaded person who was impatient because, as he told the police, he “had someplace to be 300 miles away and she was going only 65mph”. It was at night. Nothing happened to him, he got home in time for Christmas. Me and my life was changed forever.
I’m sensitive on the subject of highway speeds and I’m sorry about my reaction.

Whew! So glad to see the apology and so sorry about the hot-head who caused the wreck. We can all get a little cranky now and then, but name-calling isn’t allowed anywhere but the Pit and definitely not in our nice, gentle MMP.

@BippityBoppityBoo

NOTHING happened to him?

Did your insurance company go after him?

You would at least have a civil case against him!

I get HOT at shitty excuses by drivers who plow into people. Maintenance workers and survey crews risk their lives every day working in the right-of-way. I was told many horror stories by my coworkers. One guy said he was late to his psychiatrist appointment.

But the worst story was the woman who hit two maintenance workers, and knocked them over the rail on an overpass–directly into traffic below. She had been cited many times for speeding. That morning, she was late to work, and the CHP found evidence she was applying her makeup while driving.

She said she had no memory of the accident.

And when she showed up for her sentencing hearing, she said she was pregnant.

Slow for highway workers!

Dinner was another “why tf do I keep buying so much produce” soup. Which, of course, resulted in way too much damn soup. Because apparently it doesn’t magically become an appropriate amount of food if you combine it and turn it into a different kind of food. What it does, though, is becomes more freezer-appropriate.

Tomorrow is PT, prescription pickup, and an eye appointment. I plan to Uber to the eye appointment just so that I can do something all by myself for a change. Pathetic, right? But also… kind of makes it like a ~clandestine eye appointment~. Is this one clearer or this one? Nobody must know.

Saturday is my driving instructor appointment and I’m preeeeetty excited for it. If it goes well, I’ll be on the road again and that will honestly change my life. I’ll be back on the interstates AND the freeways AND the roads and avenues and even the occasional roundabout. I should mention this to my PT tomorrow, actually, and see if she has any advice or wisdom. But just think… I might be able to GO TO the grocery store. Even like… Target! Or Whole Foods! I could find somewhere to volunteer! I could go to parks and like… go for a wheel? All these things like going to pick up prescriptions and going to my appointments wouldn’t involve having to ask someone for a favor (except the ones that involve anesthesia). If I’m being totally honest with myself, I’m probably not quite ready yet, but hey… then the point of this can be to see just how far I am and to get closer.

And fair warning, my brain is still Swiss cheese (another reason I’m probably not perfectly ready yet and another doctor I should ask about it.) so chances are good that I’ll mention this at least a few more times before it actually happens.

I’m so sorry. I have trouble distinguishing pale grey from white and totally misunderstood that Boo was quoting and that it was one word. I’ll be more careful.

Dot, I’ve noticed that about making soup from leftovers. Have a happy, independent trip to the eye docs!

It suddenly got very smoky here. I had to shut the windows, and still my throat is burning. My son lives north of me, and he said earlier today that it was getting smoky. There’s no wind, so I don’t know where it’s coming from.
I hate, loathe, and despise fire season. I know fire crews have it so much worse, and I’m endlessly grateful for and sympathetic. Please excuse the whine. I’ve spent nearly my entire adult life in the west, and the combination of heat and smoke and no AC pushes me over the edge.

Yes and I have a lawsuit in progress. In my state a civil case is a crap shoot. At best I’ll get medical expenses up to his policy limits which were bare legal minimum. I’m still in rehab more than two years later and I will never be able to work again.

Obviously I do too and I did before my accident. The guy who hit me said (to the police) “I turned around to give my dog in the backseat a drink of water. She was whimpering”. A pull off rest stop was 15minutes away.

I have seen that here in my little midwestern burg. Mascara! Jeez, get up 10 minutes earlier. Don’t even get me going on cell phones. I think the police and highway patrol should give a ticket, with a significant fine if they even see one in your hand. Not a primary violation here. Rear-ending in the city all over the place.

Cranky spell over for the time being.

BBBBBoo
Aka ‘Bonked Brain BBBoo’

Up, caffeinated and sheveled. Off to sort.

Smoke rolled in here, too, quickly hitting “unhealthy.” We’re getting constant evacuation alerts for areas both east and west of us tonight. I’m in the guest room with a phone to monitor this so my wife can get some sleep. I just put on my Vogmask because the smoke smells bad in the house despite the electrostatic filter on the air handler.

You’re excited about something, and have a Nice Thing to look forward to! I’d be repeating myself to everyone including the cats, if I had something that big and potentially quality-of-life-improving coming up!

Babble away - it’s not like we’ve got the greatest memories anyway. Might be new news to us, too - there’s plenty of Swiss cheese in my brain, too.

This made me laugh in sympathy, because I’d do the exact same thing, and then be all frustrated that I’ve still got so many damn leftovers.

Not at all. I’d do the same thing, just to do SOMEthing for my own damn self. And I loved your joke about which one’s clearer. Snortled, in fact.
I think the YOU-you is coming back from the fog!

I’ve added boxed cake mix to my grocery list, in MG’s honor. Hope you had a nice day, sweetie. We loves ya and stuff.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 92 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Today’s agenda is jam packed. First the bug man comes at eight, and then laundry. How do we maintain such a hectic pace! Sup shall be leftovers from last night cause stuff must get et up. That’s a firm rule here at da cave.

Dots enjoy your adventure today. I’m glad you’re lookin’ forward to your driver evaluation. It’s good to have a plan and good that you know it may take a while to happen, but you’ll get there.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

I make soup often and it’s definitely impossible to make a small amount! And I don’t like to freeze it, because I don’t want to see little Mystery Tubs sitting in the freezer. So I have three neighbors that I give the extra soup to (I rotate among them). I took some on Sunday to my 82-year old neighbor across the street. My next door neighbor takes my soup to work for her lunch. My neighbor on the corner lives alone like me – he’s a little older than I am – and just lost his beloved companion doggie a couple of months ago.

I’ll call the lucky soup recipient and say, “As usual I made too much soup, so I’m going to bring you some,” and then I leave it in a container in a plastic bag hanging on their front door. Occasionally each of them reciprocates with food gifts. They say they like it. Heck, I don’t care if they throw it away. Gets it out of my kitchen, right?

I wince when you call yourself names. You actually sound anything BUT pathetic.

Mel gave up on me around 4, but I fell asleep before 9, so there’s that. I’m mostly rested and ready to continue prepping for the paint-fest next week. I’ll leave shortly to fetch Roxy, give her some breakfast, then attack the blue guest room - formerly daughter and SIL’s room. Then, who knows…?

We’ve got a stretch of hot and/or rainy for about 3 days, then more fall-like weather after that. I’m hoping I can get some work done outside - the trick will be keeping Roxy occupied. I’ll figure out something.

So beginneth the day. Happy Tuesday!!
