Come on Ellie, there’s no way you fall asleep in that situation, right?

Probably not. But you need something to tell a story, right? I thought the young boy character was great.
I think you just don’t have Sam show Ellie? The whole trying to heal him and “if you become a monster are you still inside” were pretty effecting though. Kinda rolled my eyes at the, imo, unrealistic action.
Not sure what’s unrealistic. Ellie wants to save people she loves, she’s been told her blood is a cure, Ellie thinks she can be the hero Joel is and stay up all night (she can’t), she wakes up and Sam turns on her with no notice. Maybe the timing is unrealistic. I guess gamers were prepared for that ending, but it wrecked me.
I don’t think she’s been told her blood is a cure. She’s been told that maybe a cure can be developed from whatever makes her immune. She’s a teenager, not 7. Even if she legitimately thinks her blood can cure someone, if it doesn’t, that person then kills everyone near it. And she’s never seen her blood cure someone let alone be 100% effective. It’s beyond stupid to fall asleep.
Yes, the ending is very effective, it just took me out of the show for a minute in how they got there.
Ellie would agree with you that it’s beyond stupid to fall asleep. She’s just not capable of that at this point. She’s not capable of doing the things she sees Joel do.
How quickly it goes bad is right, but old gas gets dark and thick, like varnish. Tough to clean out of old tanks and carbs.
There is no way Ellie could have stayed awake the whole night, specially with nothing to do after the kid falls asleep. And she knew the only other option apart from trying the “magic blood” hail mary was a bullet to the head right then and there. It was worth a shot, plus her immunity does make her over confident.
I was amazed at the shots Joel was making–he’s a helluva shot with a rifle. Did he ever reload? I’ll have to rewatch.
He did reload several times.
I played the game once on PS3.
Was the Black guy with his girl(daughter?) from the game and did it end the same tragic way?
Also, was the “zombies from the underground” in the game and did it end about the same way?
I should remember, but I don’t.
He was an excellent shot, but also note that unlike with the old man he killed for the rifle, all the cars and their headlights gave him plenty of light to aim by.
One thing that took me out just a little of what was an otherwise an effective and well done episode was when the Big Daddy Mushroom Man came out of the hole, I was like, “Oh this must have been one of the boss battles in the game.” Made me forget the story for a moment and remember what this all was.
I agree. I said to my wife this giant dude feels very video-gamey.
I never played the game, but there are times at a plot change that I’ll dub in “New Objective” in a very video game narrator-y voice. Also times I’ll put up my hands and pretend to use a controller.
My wife thinks it’s half as amusing as I do.
All the times he missed and/or got Ellie killed are when the player reloaded from save file. The show just skipped over them all as that would take too long. We also don’t see when the player ragequit and walked away from the game for a month.
Joel sniping also felt very videogamey. Pretty good that, for me, those are the only two moments that felt like a different medium, especially since a large portion of Ep1 are identical to the game.
If shows based on comic books have scenes that look like they came right out of the comics, why shouldn’t shows based on video games have scenes that look like they came right out of the game?
Well, you can’t really do the comic scenes - it’s moving pictures vs still. You may catch a one-second pose, and they follow the same storyline, but it’s inherently different.
The worry about this video game is a lot happens in cut-scenes and recreating it identically means you’ve already seen the show. They’ve done a good job with sticking to the storyline while going a bit deeper with the character and broadening the scope. It’s done pretty well at making the show interesting even if you know the game.
To me what makes it feel video gamey is the one offness of the episodes. Like you are just going through levels instead of a story.
