It’s one of the few shows that I never miss (TIVO) and have loved it, but it’s changed in a big way. It used to be based on a premise that a group of people who probably wouldn’t hang out together otherwise, do because they are part of a fantasy football league. I hate fantasy football, but it is a good premise for the show and the glue that kept it together. It also made for some good trash-talking between the characters.
This season it has dropped all mention of the league and gone all sex jokes, all the time. It’s like they decided their target market is now 14 year old boys.
I’m no prude, and the show has always had sex as a big part, but not 90% of it. The story line is either absent entirely, or like last night it has three or four of them, none of which go anywhere or get resolved. The masturbation scenes and cum-rag jokes take priority.
Anyone else watch this show? You like the new direction?
I loved the first couple of seasons. I haven’t liked it for a couple of seasons now. And I’ve never liked the Raffi character. He’s nothing but gross-out humor.
I loved the first couple seasons but then it started to slip into the “everyone’s a caricature of themselves” trap combined with any excuse for a guest spot. Guess I’m not missing much by drifting off last season.
Yeah, the guest spots trouble me too. It takes it out of the realm of a group of ordinary shlubs when they keep running into celebrities who actually give them the time of day for a moment.
Actually, they’ve all been friends since at least high school. Otherwise, you are right and the show has devolved over the seasons, and Raffi should have died with the Seth Rogen character and stayed dead. I did notice that the latest episode was written by the actor playing Andre, if that matters.
It the last season (already announced), so I’ll finish the ride.
It was created by the folks still writing and showrunning it - the couple Jackie Marcus Schaffer and Jack Schaffer. But I believe the principles are involved in things. Oh, and in real life, Pete is married to Jenny. Kinda funny given Pete’s role as a bit of a bully and Kevin’s role as a bit of a bitch.
Oh, and Katie Aselton (Jenny) won Miss Teen Maine of 1995. Given her “membership” in this gang of comedy/indie film hot players, I would not have seen that coming.
Yes, this last season feels like a half-hearted victory lap of cheap set ups. I don’t mind finding a couple of episodes on my DVR when I have a bit of time, but I don’t stay current like I did when it first came out.
These days, only Raffi’s beyond-the-pale graphic absurdity still can catch me off guard.
Question: did we ever learn Taco’s real name?
It really did drive too many catch phrases in our house. We still fill in unknown names with Chalupa Batman.
Yeah, the fact that it turned out that Steve Rannazzisi (Kevin) douched out and lied about being in the building, it was a bummer. Part of the charm of these idiots getting into these embarrassing situations is that they are kinda likeable.
The first few seasons I loved this show, but it’s gone downhill, with this season being the weakest. Cleverness has given way to puerile writing. I have a high tolerance for juvenile humor – I don’t deny my immaturity – but I had to turn one episode this season off and didn’t finish it. It was just so uncomfortable to watch. It was the one where the
“wet spot” and what to call female sexual secretions figured heavily. It was a better show when the fantasy football played more of a role.
The funniest part of the show for me these days is when they return from commercial and the voiceover says “This show is intended for mature audiences only. Viewer discretion is advised.”
I’ve watched every season up until this one, and my reservations for the are pretty much confirmed here.
The thing that bugged me was they would make up some random-ass phrase and it seemed to dictate the entire episode. Like the writers made something up and just HAD to put it out there.
I missed the football too. My favorite part of the whole series happened in, literally, the first episode. When Kevin and Ruxin were debating the guys jail time based on a FF trade…hilarious.
All of that being said. Raffi’s randomness and irreverence got me every time and I loved every thing he said. The Raffi and Rogan episode were my favorite because they didn’t pretend to be anything other than just one-off randomness.
