I caught an episode from the first season of The League at my parents’ house after midnight a few weeks back. It was pretty funny, so I watched the whole first season (just 6 30 minute episodes). It’s basically a bunch of upper-middle class guys in their mid 30’s who are in a fantasy football league. Why a show like this didn’t come out years ago is beyond me; fantasy football is hugely popular and the lengths people go to to win it are insane.
The best character is easily Ruxin (played by Nick Kroll, writer for Chapelle Show and cast member of Sit Down, Shut up), a defense attorney with incredible comedic timing. His jokes about being Jewish, having the hottest wife, and generally being the one to go the lowest to get good draft picks and advice are great.
In the season 2 premiere, they head to Vegas to do their fantasy football draft. A producer from Curb Your Enthusiasm teamed up with his wife to create the show. If you like It’s Always Sunny or are of the, I’d say, Arrested Development/30 Rock/Curb ilk, I think you’ll like it.
It is a great show
Each time I watch it, in my mind, the faces of my friends from college who are still in their Fantasy Football leagues, are superimpossed over all the characters. If you ever were in a league, you totally know guys like this
I’ve been watching - I think it’s fantastic. Certainly not a show I’d recommend my parents watch (other than the fact they know nothing about fantasy football), but the crude humor works well in a setting like this.
I love this show. I watched a marathon last week with some friends who are not into football at all, and they thought it was hilarious and wanted to know when they could watch more. I think this week’s premiere was stronger than Always Sunny.
Agreed. I got a very strong “jumped the shark” feeling from the premiere, but I hope it continues to be good.
Munch, I don’t know about your parents, but mine are mid 50’s and mid 60’s and they lovedForgetting Sarah Marshall, so they’re into that sort of gross humor. I don’t think they could relate, however, to fantasy football.
Love this show, and they completely nail the fantasy aspect. I agree with everyone else who says - all of these guys are in my league.
Jon Lajoie, the actor who plays Taco, is worth a search on YouTube. He has some hilarious skits (Rapist Glasses) and songs (Everyday Normal Guy) that are really good.
