The Licorice Thread

Hey - it’s not my fault, I hadda cold…

I’m with the licorice lovers…especially the salty one, the saltier, the better.

But I guess not everyone love salty licorice. Check out what this heathen has to say:

Those names are almost as bizare as Japanese candy names. Check our http://www.engrish.com/ for examples.

Black licorice tastes like shoe.

Red licorice tastes like sock.

Then again, I love grits.

Opinions ? eh.

Okay, what is the deal with that stuff anyway? I remember as a kid trekking down to Busby&Wing Drug Store, who had a real candy counter, the kind that had all the goodies laid out under glass precisely at kid eye level.

There was some kind of black licorice there that I actually liked, not the twizzler kind (Red Twizzlers are AOK) but a kind of Gum drop shaped black licorice which was much, much better. They were extraordinarily tough and chewy and would stick to an 8 year olds teeth for hours it seemed like, which is important.

For all the licorice (or liquorice, to the connoiseur) junkies of the SDMB, here is a site I ran across that seems to be Grand Central Station of the Licorice Kingdom:

The Magic of Licorice

It has the Straight Dope on licorice of all kinds, with links to suppliers, forums, history and recipes (???). Hmmm, I seem to have begun salivating uncontrollably…
