The lifespan of threads.

I don’t understand. How come there are some threads that remain forever and a day, and then there are others that seem to disappear quickly?
In Mindless Pointless etc…there was a thread entitled Ask the Abused Father with a Child. I was very invested in it, as I believe some others were. But it’s gone.
While crap like (fake ex.) Should I Cut My Toenails goes on forever…
What’s up?

It’s not gone, it’s right here:

Ask the father who was abused as a child

Thanks. I couldn’t find it, and don’t know why.
BTW where DO old threads go?

Threads are listed by the time of the last post. So older threads are further down the page, or on a different page if it’s been long enough. There are no rules about any of it, just the vagaries of the people posting at any given time.

If you want to keep track of a thread, click on thread tools (top of the thread in the blue bar just above the first post) and click “subscribe”. Then you can go to your User CP (left of the other blue bar at the top of the page) and the thread will be there. You may have to click the link that says “other subscribed threads” if there haven’t been any posts in a while. You can also set it up so that when you post to a thread, you are automatically subscribed. Go to User CP, and click on Edit Options (left side of the screen), go to “Default Subscription Thread Mode” and choose your option (no subscription, various notification options).

Threads may not show in the recently accessed lists, but they don’t totally disappear unless the mods remove them. They can still be found thru judicious searching.

You may be running into the fact that there are settings that determine how many threads are displayed when viewing a forum. They can be set to only threads updated in, say, the last two days, and if the thread hasn’t been updated since then it doesn’t display in your view. You can change that by going to the bottom of the forum in question and changing the drop down that regulates how far back you will display threads.

Yes, the number of threads displayed is a feature, I assume it is to reduce hamster strain. When you pull up a forum list, the board has to go pull all the content. Limiting that pull reduces server work.

Default it’s set to 2 days, so threads disappear off the bottom fairly easily. Resetting that keeps them around longer.

But disappearing off the bottom doesn’t mean they’ve gone anywhere. They’re still on the servers. They just haven’t been displayed for you to click.

The defaults are different for different forums, I think. Most of them are 2 days, but it looks like Cafe Society and Great Debates are 10 days, and Game Room is one month. Unless I changed those settings for myself, but I don’t recall doing so (which means nothing; I’m lucky if I remember my own birthday).

I think you must have changed the settings. Mine are all at two days.

Maybe YOU changed YOUR settings. Ever think about that, smart guy?

(OK, now the question is: why the heck did I go and do that?)

Mine are all at ten days, and I don’t believe I’ve ever altered their settings.

Mine are all at one day and I have no idea whether I’ve adjusted them or not.

I don’t know what mine are, and I plan to keep it that way. Surprise me, internet!
