Like **Kitten Blue **I thought it was a Poe parody (I’ve never read Lovecroft.)
**Marmite (and Vegemite) are one of those things you have to grow up with to enjoy, I think- I only know one or two Americans who like the stuff, but pretty much every non-“foreign immigrant” household in Australia & NZ will have a jar of one of them in it.

True. I hate marmite & vegemite. I used to make myself a paste of butter & savoury (brewers) yeast. That was tasty. I got the idea from an American cooking book Rachel’s Kitchen.
Is there a genetic split here, do you think? Are Marmite lovers/haters tasters, non tasters, or supertasters? Don’t hate me for loving Marmite - that would stick you firmly in the tastist camp and give me constitutional grounds for major courtroom action. Ya think?
I have seen it at black BBQs many times. When the hell has green bean casserole been on a commercial?
Commercials for French’s fried onions cans were always featuring their usage on GBC.
So I tried marmite today for my afternoon snack. Spread it on buttered bread, added a few slices of cheddar cheese and toasted it.
Not too bad, actually. I am glad that I knew what it tasted like before I tried it. When I opened up the jar, it looked like molasses and had the consistency of Nutella, so I probably would have assumed it was sweet.
It was odd putting something savory on my toast. I’m so used to something sweet like jam or lemon curd.
Quality of Lovecraft imitation: A
Truth about Marmite (and Vegemite, too): A+
Quality of Marmite and Vegemite: What grade is below F? Way below F?
I’m a Marmite lover and definitely not a supertaster. Marmite would probably put a supertaster’s tongue in traction for 6 weeks. I think Marmite lovers gravitate toward the strong umami/glutamate taste… stinky cheese, fermented vegetables, soy sauce, miso soup, beef jerky, salted tomatoes, and such.
Hey, that’s my shopping list! Add salty licorice, kim chee, hot & sour soup, & wasabi peanuts to that list, and I’m in heaven.
I don’t eat anything that doesn’t smell sort of like feet.
I recall an NZ science fiction convention 20-mumble years back where the star guest David Gerrold (Trouble with Tribbles, War against the Chtorr series, etc) was given a large jar of one of the two (Vegemite I think) as a special gift – something to do with him having claimed it was only good as axle grease.
Definitely an acquired taste. As to the super-taster, etc… I loves me Marmite, and curries, chili, stinky cheese, miso, etc… and would generally rather eat salty than sweet.
PS: Excellent Threadspotting title Malleus, Incus, Stapes!
Haha - sorry I just noticed this, but that is awesome! Plus, my first Threadspotting. Thanks, man.
More likely marmite - for as long as I can remember Vegemite has been considered as Australian - it would be a disappointment if anyone were so clueless as to give vegemite at a New Zealand convention
Er…what does this have to do with pedos?
Did you watch the video Duality was referring to? Not actual pedporn, but featuring an extremely perky girl.
Yeah, I’m the one who linked to it. That’s Caitlin hill
…She was 19 when she did that video IIRC… and it’s a just a girl talking about vegemite…sheesh…
Well, that explains that funny taste.
Oh, bravo!
I haven’t enjoyed anything on this board in a couple years as much as I did the OP.
It appears that those who like it get it in large tubs. I also understand that you use very little in each serving.
My questions are: Does a tub last a long time? Does it need to be refrigerated after opening? Does it have an expiration date or a half life?
If it indeed does a half life which or these elements would you most compare it to time wise:
