We just got back from a week-long vacation, and friends fed my mare for me while we were out. We bought three bales of hay just before we left but put them in a new, improved location; the old hay stayed in the back and was enough for the time we were on our trip.
When we got back, I developed a sudden, violent stomach flu that completely incapacitated me. I was unable to get to the barn, though my hubby fed for me. Apparently, he used the last flake of the old hay last night–and the other folks at the barn (save one) didn’t know about the new location of my new 3 bales of hay.
Today, the man who feeds in the morning for me called to express concern Ana was out of hay. Unable to reach me by cell phone, he talked to my horsey-neighbor, who gave him three flakes of hay to use for now. I called him back and left a voicemail explaining where the hay was–then horsey-neighbor called to tell me about loaning hay. I explained the situation, and she just chuckled and said not to worry about it, and if I ever need hay, she’s there for me. Awesome, horsey-neighbor! And awesome, morning feeder! It’s great that he was so concerned as to call and talk to horsey-neighbor. He’s really looking out for my mare, and being cool with other boarders, too; many people would just grab a flake of someone else’s hay without asking.
I went to the barn tonight, still physically weak but functional, so I could spend at least some time with my girl and get the new hay bales opened and labeled with my mare’s name. I saw another boarder had thrown hay to Ana since he was there feeding the others, and thinking I was out of hay, had loaned me a flake of his. Heh. I apologized and explained where the hay was, and why I hadn’t been there to make it easier for everyone to find the hay.
I hope that isn’t too convoluted or poorly explained (hey, I’m still weak and not thinking too clearly–yup, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it), but basically…thanks, fellow boarder, morning feed guy, and horsey neighbor! You all made me feel like you truly care about my mare and her well-being, and were generous when you thought I was in need (or, eek, irresponsible!). Super cool, all three of you!
