The Mini Un-Rant Thread - Your Place to Squee

It’s so easy to post about the stupid people in the BBQ pit mini rant thread - I do it a couple times of week.

But now I have the opposite and no big topic line to start about it. So if you have some little happy you want to post - maybe you can do it here.

I’ll start:

Thank you, normally annoying co-worker! I can’t believe you got me a dunkin’ donuts coffee just the way I like it for no apparent reason other than good will. Squee!

Last Tuesday, one of my coworkers was furious. “The cashier at the cafeteria, she gave me a bad coin! How dare her! I’ll raise such a ruckus!”

When he showed us the coin, I pointed out that it looked a lot like a 2€ coin, so the cashier had probably passed it over as a 2€ without noticing it wasn’t; it looked to me like it would be accepted by a vending machine. A third coworker agreed. Looking at it, it seemed Thai. I bought it off him for his 2€: I don’t exactly collect coins, but I have a small collection of “coins with stories”.

It’s a 10 baht coin commemorating King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Golden Jubilee. Worth less than 1€, accepted by vending machines as 2€, and the only coin in my small collection which is from a place I’ve never been.

Without internet, finding this information would have required visits to numismatic stores and fairs; with, it took about ten minutes.

That’s awesome, Nava!

I squee’d at your post because my mom used to live in Thailand and I knew what a baht was!

Today’s squee:

I am working on my group’s charity event and have been emailing all these people for donations for our Geeky Goody bags (they have themes, are awesome, and we raffle them off).

A member had emailed me with a cool website that makes really cool-shaped soaps. I did some research, emailed the owner, and she responded back in 5 minutes just as excited to donate as I was to ask her!

I’m very passionate about our event, and really get motivated because it’s in memory of my sister. But sometimes it can discouraging to email and call and get nada. This one just made my day

I’m full of squee over the cage I’ve rigged up for my rabbits. It’s not my original idea or anything, but I did a lot of modification to make it fit the space I have. A lot of rabbit owners are making “storage cube cages”, taking 14x14" wire storage cube panels, zip ties, and other things to create a comfy cage for their rabbits.

I took a “kit” sold online and added different doors from another seller (as I didn’t like the flimsy ones that came with the kit), covered the floor and platforms with indoor/outdoor carpeting, put together a simple platform on caster wheels, sawed thick wooden dowels down to the proper length to use as floor supports, and used wire ‘by-the-foot’ shelving cut down at the hardware store to serve as big “double doors” on both ends of the cage, to let me get in there for easier cleaning.

Finally I’ve gotten them out of that tiny starter cage and into something they can really feel more comfortable in.

A friend of ours just gave us a gift certificate for FreshDirect. You know what this means? For at least a year I will not have to haul a billion lbs of cat litter up the stairs into our apartment. Score!

I read in the AAA magazine about the Dublin,Oh Irish Festival. I mentioned it to my Cootie Dumpling, and she was happy to say she was off that weekend. We made plans, now we’re going away for the weekend.

I finally got my new chair at work yesterday. It’s so comfy…and it adjusts vertically! I can reach my desk now!

My next door neighbors have adopted a little black lab mix. She’s so cute! I love watching her run around…her little legs are so short, and she’s trying so hard to run like a big dog!

I get to go to a golden retriever rescue reunion this weekend. The location has a pond, and there will be plenty of tennis balls! I love watching the goldens swim, and most of them seem to know that I don’t mind throwing a slobbery tennis ball.

Thanks to the guy that was standing in the rain, holding up the railroad crossing arm that had been stuck in the down position. (I did thank him as I drove by)

The storm we had Sunday (in the Washington, DC area) was bad enough to kill 4 people and knock out power to thousands. One of those thousands is a friend of my wife, who is preparing to teach a summer-camp kind of class soon and needs electricity to prepare (for his laptop). The wife asked if we could take him in for a few days…so we’ll have a displaced houseguest in our living room for a bit.

The subject he’s going to teach, however, is cooking. He’s quite a good cook. And because his power is out, he brought the contents of his refrigerator.

Tonight TheKid and I played Ring-around-the-rosie in the pouring rain. I felt like I was 5 again.

We just got back from a week-long vacation, and friends fed my mare for me while we were out. We bought three bales of hay just before we left but put them in a new, improved location; the old hay stayed in the back and was enough for the time we were on our trip.

When we got back, I developed a sudden, violent stomach flu that completely incapacitated me. I was unable to get to the barn, though my hubby fed for me. Apparently, he used the last flake of the old hay last night–and the other folks at the barn (save one) didn’t know about the new location of my new 3 bales of hay.

Today, the man who feeds in the morning for me called to express concern Ana was out of hay. Unable to reach me by cell phone, he talked to my horsey-neighbor, who gave him three flakes of hay to use for now. I called him back and left a voicemail explaining where the hay was–then horsey-neighbor called to tell me about loaning hay. I explained the situation, and she just chuckled and said not to worry about it, and if I ever need hay, she’s there for me. Awesome, horsey-neighbor! And awesome, morning feeder! It’s great that he was so concerned as to call and talk to horsey-neighbor. He’s really looking out for my mare, and being cool with other boarders, too; many people would just grab a flake of someone else’s hay without asking.

I went to the barn tonight, still physically weak but functional, so I could spend at least some time with my girl and get the new hay bales opened and labeled with my mare’s name. I saw another boarder had thrown hay to Ana since he was there feeding the others, and thinking I was out of hay, had loaned me a flake of his. Heh. I apologized and explained where the hay was, and why I hadn’t been there to make it easier for everyone to find the hay.

I hope that isn’t too convoluted or poorly explained (hey, I’m still weak and not thinking too clearly–yup, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it), but basically…thanks, fellow boarder, morning feed guy, and horsey neighbor! You all made me feel like you truly care about my mare and her well-being, and were generous when you thought I was in need (or, eek, irresponsible!). Super cool, all three of you!

This video of an orchestra fail made me laugh until tears were welling up. Nice kettledrums, though.

Can I squee over the new “quoting copies quotes as well” feature? I love it!

My orchestra had two concerts last weekend. It was a concept our conductor invented called “Musical Theatre Sports”. We had two teams of singers, who took it in turns to put on costumes and perform musical theatre numbers we pulled out of a hat. The Saturday concert was a complete disaster, and our conductor promised us the concept would die a very unnatural death as soon as we were done. But on Sunday … I don’t want to brag, but we were on fire! Everyone had an awesome time, and we’ve gotten five requests to do it again soon. The best part was when the singers were challenged to incorporate four players into their performance. I got to share a mike with a cute boy who was as thrilled about his vest as I was about my frilly apron and sing “Do re mi”. It was such fun.

i am loving this thread - so much fun to read!!

Got an email last night that a dear friend is stopping by Sunday night on his way through town - yay!

I just found out all three of my favorite bands are playing in town at the same festival in a couple of weeks! One of them hasn’t played here in years, and I am just thrilled to pieces. To top it off, I saw the lead singer for one of them walking down the street the other day. We chatted briefly and I told him I was excited about the tour - He was really nice about taking a minute to talk with me.

Plus I am moving into my own place this weekend and all of the unexpected offers of help moving from friends and family is warming the cockles! Even from my comic-book guy, randomly. People can be pretty awesome.

I get to see my boyfriend for a long weekend starting tomorrow. Oh the squees I am squeeing.

My boyfriend made PLANS for us tonight! Usually, I am the organizer in the relationship – some would say “bossy control freak,” but I say they’re wrong – so it’s always squee-inducing when he thinks things up for us.

And they’re great plans! We’re going to the Museum of the City of New York for cocktails and music and special exhibitions.

I refuse to actually squee, but I will say I’m totally psyched for this weekend. I have a growing list of projects to complete on my newly acquired table saw, but have either had no time to work on them or it’s been too hot to work in the garage, or both. But this Saturday my kids and wife are out of the house for the day and it’s going to be in the low '80’s. I’m taking the van to Lowe’s in the morning to load up on some lumber and then it’s back to the garage for a day of uninterrupted woodworking! I can almost smell the sawdust already.
Well, OK.

Squee.

Today’s squee: A friend posted “Shatner on the Mount” on their FB today - so I got to listen to it on my iphone headphones while working. I love that video!

Captain Kirk is climbing the mountain. Why is he climbing the mountain? Because he’s in love!
