I recently found a mix tape I made myself in 1998, and I really like it. But it got me thinking of all the people who claim never to have heard of half the bands I like. Which I find odd since a not insignificant number of songs I like were in fact radio singles. On the other hand, I bet there’s at least one song on this tape by a group no one but Ben Kweller fans have ever heard of. Mix tapes are fun that way.
And I like games.
So how about a game about my mix tapes? Luckily, I’ve kept track of most of the tapes I’ve made for myself and others, so there’s a nice list of them on my computer. However, most of the songs are from 1991 or later, sorry if that eliminates you. I wasn’t interested in music before then.
Here’s how the game shall work: This is a test of your familiarity with this music. By “familiar” I mean you can say you’re either heard the specific song, or heard other songs by the artist. Of course you’re on your honor.[sub]cheating at a game with no real point is kind of sad, don’t you think? If you look up the lyrics or what have you for songs you’re unsure of, try to be honest with yourself.[/sub]
Give yourself one point for each artist you know songs by.
Give yourself another point for each song you know.
For example, if you know the group Self but not the song “cannon” you could still get a point. Obviously you can’t get the song without the artist because you’re familiar with the artist’s song even if you didn’t remember their name.
Twenty-four songs for a possible total of 48 points.
Easy enough, right? The person(s) with the most points wins.

Unless you meant Tracy Bonham’s “Every Breath,” and not Tracy Bothem, in which case I would be at 28. And, now that I’ve thought about it more, “Thick of It All” is from an album I own, so I must have heard it, which makes it 29.
And yeahLook!Ninjas! it’s probably spelled wrong. I remembered to check the spelling of her name a few days ago, but that attempt at posting this was eaten, and I forgot that I couldn’t spell when I wrote the orginal list I later found
Wait, make that 24 if that’s Tracy Bonham, I just remembered what song “Every Breath” is. “Every breath is like the one before/ Yeah, it’s like the one before / You get it right you breathe no more…” Something like that, right?
I’d just like to get in an early bid for fastest and worst loser.
I scored exactly 2. I’ve heard of Sarah McLachlan and Greenday, and that’s it. For all I know, everything else could be made up. Obviously, I’ve been living under a rock all these years and didn’t know it.
To make up for my abysmal ignorance, I’ll share something fun. On the AMG (www.allmusic.com) entry for Mike Oldfield’s ‘Hergest Ridge’, Paddy Moloney’s credit reads simply ‘wind’. Check for yourself if you don’t believe me. Is PM the only person ever credited on a commercially-released album for ‘wind’? If so, could make for an especially funny and baffling music trivia quiz in years to come.
I got 24, and I know which band is the Ben Kweller band. Actually, indie props to you for knowing Radish and The Notwist back in 1998. I din’t even know that the latter existed back then.
Hey, if other people would like to add tapes, we could do a round a day:D
How about Mirror Image egamI rorriM today as round 2, and Biggirl tomorrow as round 3? I’ll post round 4 on Monday then…whoever else after than on Tuesday.
