Planning a convention for some other geek activity?
Planning a convention for some other geek activity?
I think knowing the difference between hentai and anime probably nominates anyone for the “King Geek” crown…
(what is the difference, anyway? All I know is that they’re both forms of Japanese animation)
What about people who get dressed up as the characters of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie they’ve camped out to see?
My brother has a friend that supposedly spent over a thousand dollars and hundreds of man-hours building an exact replica of a light saber. So not only did he not spend his money and time on social activities, and not only did he spend his money and time on his Sci-Fi/Fantasy obsession, but he managed to work in the fact that he’s an engineer.
Naw, nowadays RPGers are almost mainstream.
I’d say furries are the absolute nadir.
Anime is Japanese animation - ranging from kids stuff to sci-fi to dramas and just about every other genre. Hentai is a subset of anime that refers to adult animation - this can range from normal sex stuff, to freaky bondage animation to tentacle porn .
Oh, and ** N9IWP **, I would kick that blond pansy’s butt from here to Valhalla and back again.
the only thing geekier than RPGing is LARPing. I speak from experience.
The SCA is for those whom this little ditty describes- “If ye can’t get laid in the SCA, ye can’t get laid at all”
I speak from experience on that one too. I’ve reformed.
Furries dont scare me much, as long as they dont come anywhere near my raccoon stuffy.
Oh my GAWD! I must be the biggest loser on the planet!!! I do all of this stuff with my 30 year old geek buddies on the weekends. We have a rotating shift for the things we do so every weekend is something different. DAMN… I guess I’ll stop working on my RenFest costume, my Star Wars costume, my Star Trek costume, my Babylon 5 costume and so on…
Who cares what is geeky or not! RPG is like any other form of escapism. Books, TV, movies, SCA, Renfests, trading cards, coin collecting… whatever makes one happy. Personally, I think golf is a pretty geeky pursuit but whatever floats your boat. I say do what you love, life’s too short.
All hail the geeks! For the geeks shall inherit the earth! HUZZAH!
Bingo is the orgy of the old!
Hanging out on message boards, debating which activities are more geekier than others.
Definitely that.
That, and ham radio operators meetings.
i had friends who were in EPIC (a robotics club at my high school) and so…we…um…
we went to KB toys online and bought a bunch of laser tag packs…and played laser tag on friday nights…
sure, it sounds like its all non-geeky…
one of my friends mounted a laser pointer on his gun
RPGing means playing a Role Playing Game - basically you guide a character(ones character can range from an elven sorceror, starship Captian, to a Private Eye, depending on the game) through a scenerio, led by a “Dungeon Master” or “Game Keeper” - these games tend tends to have lots of dice rolling, and keeping track of stats like hit points on a piece of paper. Common examples or RPG’s include Dungeons & Dragons, Rifts, and my personal favorite*** Call of Cthulhu.***
Dopefest.
Offline geeky things for a group of 4-6.
Discussing deep stuff, I would say, like philosophy or politics or something like that. Can it get any more geeky than that?
RPGing is most definitely still geeky. “Rules lawyering” has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard of.
Make sure there is no alcohol, is that dilutes the geek rating. For instance, getting together to watch Star Trek: TNG is pretty geeky. However, playing the TNG drinking game is quite funny. (“Magnify” Drink!)
A structured chess tournament is pretty geeky. (Especially if you use a chess clock.)
That’s all I got. I keep coming back to what I like to do with friends, and I don’t think most of them qualify:
Playing Madden 2004 (most geeky thing we do)
Poker
Casino
UFC events (also at a casino)
Movies
Disc Golf (fairly geeky, in a burnout kinda way)
Tennis
Wiffle Ball
Horseshoes
Darts
That’s pretty much everything we do. Hope it helps.
Arguing about which superhero (or spaceship, or video game character, etc.) would win in a particular pitched battle.
Trying to calculate astronomical distances based on a few small random tidbits of data.
Making jokes that depend on knowing the stories on the front page of slashdot.org.
And another vote for RPG rules lawyering.
Inspired by walrus:
Sitting around not roleplaying because you’re constantly drawn off topic by everyone making inside jokes that refer to inside jokes from the message areas on slashdot, fark, Kenzer&Co, or the SMDB, and everyone thinking they’re immensely witty people for parroting the same jokes over and over again.
I noticed that no one said the ULTIMATE geek fest, one of which I am not ashamed to be apart of
DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS ANYONE?
this game has been the center for lonely geeks and nerds for years, and still is. if you are interested in this game (which has been known to be refered as mental masterbation) then check out
good day mates, and my lv 5 barbarian (with Rage) is pretty fly
man…I need to get laid:-p (just don’t let my girlfriend read that:-p)
It’s a joke, I do that…

FYI: LARP=live action role playing — scary stuff.
Rules Lawyering is not funny. It’s annoying… Elliot. Sorry, off topic.
The geekiest thing I do (aside from roleplaying) is renting movies I’ve already seen and looking for continuity errors. This gets annoying for most people. I love it. So does my boyfriend.
Also, Risk. Doesn’t get much geekier that that, except maybe Axis and Allies.
Playing Dungeons and Dragons Heroes on PS2. Watching someone else playing Final Fantasy.
Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Scattergories, Catch Phrase.
