I just discovered this one, but it became an instant favorite:
I especially love the surreal interlude @1:23.
Another epic entry in the “Unconventional Protagonist Dancing in an Unconventional Setting” genre:

This one from 2006 was pretty awesome, and gave a nice kick-in-the-pants to the music video format:
A fan made it, and the band adopted it as the “official” video.
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes. I don’t know if I’d call it great but it certainly is unique.
Rube Goldberg version-This Too Shall Pass.
Two from the Antipodes
Dominoes, contraptions and a cute popster - Zowie’s Broken Machine.
Interesting use of body paint - Gotye featuring Kimbra - Somebody I Used to Know
Love 'em or hate 'em, Arcade Fire began to popularize web-based, interactive, personalized music videos with The Wilderness Downtown.
Here’s a video of the video in case it doesn’t work on your browser or computer.
I think this is THE music video of the year:
PonPonPon by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Not only is the song catchy as a cold, but the video puts me in the mind of old MTV.
The video for LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem is pretty epic and reminiscent of the effort put into 80’s videos
Duran Duran’s Girl Panic completely brought back everything that was great about Duran Duran’s 80’s videos.
My favourite musician (also first-tier celebrity crush), Tomoko Kawase tends to do very fun (and often very strange - though not quite PonPonPon level) music videos, for her two solo projects, Tommy february6 and Tommy heavenly6. (Her band, the brilliant green, tend to have less weird videos.)
Some samplings:
From Tommy february:
Kiss One More Time
MaGic in youR Eyes
Love is Forever
From Tommy heavenly:
I’m Gonna SCREAM+
Papermoon
Heavy Starry Chain (which I like to call 'Snow White Meets the Vampires - although they’re supposed to be magicians, apparently.)
And her latest, from October this year: I’m Your Devil (Hallowe’en remix)
That’s a great video, but somehow I prefer this version, which was apparently done for a KCRW interview. Kimbra really steals the show on this version - it really brings out how talented she is. Gotye hit a homer by getting her to do the female part of the song with him.
“Curl of the Burl” by Mastodon is a good video. When it was being played a few months ago on MTV they edited out the parts showing the guy getting high though.
In the world of pop “Don’t Stop” by Foster the People is pretty cool. It even features Gabourey Sidibe.
Whatever your opinion is of Coldplay as a band, you can’t deny how impressive their music video for Strawberry Sing is. - YouTube
I love that Gotye/Kimbra video.
I also love Her Morning Elegance
by Oren Lavie
Looks like Stop Motion is a thing…
Yeah, no. What is that spastic thing she’s doing with her hands? Another tragic victim of terminal TheatreKiditis, I reckon.
My Feelings For You with Avicii if you like old arcade games from the 70s and 80s.
I gotta add Florence + The Machine’s The Dog Days are Over.
It’s manically delicious!
Also along those lines, Studio Killers’ Ode to the Bouncer. Such a cheery, peppy song, with such questionable lyrics—also a cheery, peppy and weirdly unsettling video.
A few years old, but the video Miyazaki animated for On Your Mark.
Honorable mention (it’s a video of a performance, not a music video proper): Arc Attack’s Doctor Who theme, on Tesla Coils.
Anything OkGo does is amazing, but for some modern interactivity, fire up Chrome and go to allisnotlo.st
Trust me.
Aside from some pretty kick-ass tunes, I’m partial to Red Fang’s videos. They really know how to have some fun with it.
RED FANG - “Wires”
RED FANG - “Prehistoric Dog”
**RED FANG - “Hank Is Dead”
**Same goes for pretty much every Foo Fighters video ever. They have so many good ones, I won’t even bother to link them all. Instead, I’ll leave you this recent real-life music video, with cameo by Westboro BC.
