The new Doctor in costume!

I hope you’re basing that on more than a couple of pictures.

I am taken aback by how young he looks. However, I trust Stephan Moffat.

I agree. Supposedly he blew them away at the auditions and really captured the timeless, “young appearance but old mind” persona they were looking for.

He does look a little young, but Moffat has been far and away my favorite writer in the revived series thus far, so I have faith in his ability to write to Smith’s personality and appearance. Though, I kind of preferred the somewhat darker look in the earlier promotional shot. Reminiscent of Nine (who I preferred to Ten), but maybe they are more interested in continuing more in Tennant’s style.

Was there any explanation on why they went with a younger Doctor?

EDIT: nevermind answered above.

Are y’all who keep saying he looks young looking at the full-size picture? He’s got some crow’s feet and some forehead wrinkles going on.

The Doctor’s actors ages have been trending downward since the first Regeneration.

It hasn’t been a steady trend - Pertwee started older than Troughton ended; Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy are the same age, and they’re both about ten years older than Peter Davison, but the trend has been there.

And, speaking of Davison, he was not much older than Smith when he started (30, vs 26).

Smith’s going to be the first Doctor who’s younger than me, which is a bit weird, but that’s just me getting older, not him being terribly young. (I’m currently the same age as Davison during his run, and quickly approaching Tennant.)

(Ages of each Doctor*: 1/Hartnell - 55-58, 2/Troughton - 46-49, 3/Pertwee - 51-55, 4/T Baker - 40-47, 5/Davison - 30-33, 6/C Baker - 41-43, 7/McCoy - 44-53, 8/McGann - 37-46**, 9/Eccleston - 45, 10/Tennant - 34-38, 11/Smith - 26-?)

  • Estimates - I’m just playing with years, since I don’t have original production dates to compare against birthdays.

** McGann only appeared in the movie, but that’s how old he was at the time Eccleston played the Doctor.

NOW…Judging by appearance, everyone’s going to perceive them differently - my own subjective guesses as to ages would reverse the Troughton/Pertwee and Davison/Smith pairs - For Troughton/Pertwee, it’s how they carry themselves in character - 3 seems so much younger than 2; for Davison/Smith, it’s the faces…as mentioned above, Smith’s kind of craggy, but Davison had a baby face.

So the twenty-five-foot-long scarf is NOT standard issue for Time Lords?
