The new "Dune" adaptation

A big YES to this. Also, looks like the Weirding Way is done properly too (not that dumb-ass voice gun from the older movie).

Yes. This.

The book starts on Caladan and establishes some characters (Paul, Jessica, Duke Leto, the Reverend Mother and some others and clues us in to the Bene Gesserit not being happy with Jessica and drops some things we learn more about later like the Landsraad). Also, Caladan is a word with vast oceans which contrast sharply with Arrakis.

All of that said, the book does not spend much time there and moves on to Arrakis pretty quickly.

It only seems to be blocked in the US, UK, Denmark, and South-east Asia, according to this site that checks region restrictions.

You can view it in Canada, the rest of Europe, and practically everywhere else. It’s been on YouTube since 2017, so if they were going to block it elsewhere they would have.

It’s a pity that Americans aren’t allowed to watch it on YouTube, because it’s certainly worth watching. It’s probably the best version of Lynch’s movie ever released.

It’s been seriously recut and re-edited into a clear, coherent story that makes sense, and is far closer to the book. It’s really well done, and appears to be highly rated by Dune fandom.

But at least the trailer is available everywhere… except Germany, Austria and Switzerland. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Yes. With the odd triangle thing attached to his upper back.

Yes, the guy in red was Feyd.

But does that little joke make sense if the reader does not already know the original punny Latin name was “Bene Gesserit”?

While it’s only a short bit of the plot, I feel like the contrast is really good for setting the early mood of the story. The Caladan scenes should have a lot of water and a really luxurious, indulgent feeling, with the estate feeling very comfortable (though formal) and rich. It’s sets up how off-putting Arrakis is, and how out of their element the Atreides are on there. You don’t need a huge number of water scenes or to show a lot of the house, but I think the contrast really helps to convey the tone to the audience.

Outside, they were, but I seem to recall that inside the sietch, their clothing was pretty colorful. Although it’s been a long time since I read Dune, so it may be time for a reread and this time pay attention to clothing descriptions. The only one I actually remember was the one of Jessica’s dress at the dinner in Arrakeen.

I did find a chapter-by-chapter version on YT (tho those usually have distorted or mirror-flipped screens or some other delberate glitch).

Welp, I thought I did-can’t find it now…

Thanks for posting this! I’m definitely going to watch it. I wish Lynch would relent and do a director’s cut, but it’s been 36 years and he won’t budge. I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

I watched it over the weekend. I got it from… places. Legitimate places.

It’s a good edit, though it doesn’t fix the fundamental difficulty of the story. The weirding modules are still there, of course, as is some of the other Lynchian stuff like the cat milking. People that hated that stuff aren’t going to be any happier.

There is some really rough footage in there. Not sure where it came from, but it looks like it was ripped from a screener or something. I think it was stuff I hadn’t seen before, but I’m not absolutely certain about that. Mostly scenes with the Fremen.

Overall, it’s worth a watch, certainly better than the theatrical version and more coherent than the extended version. But still pretty weird.

The film did have plenty of cheesy moments, and is brought down by the datedness of the effects, but it has some really great moments as well. I liked the scene where the worms silently surround Paul after he’s taken the Water of Life. I hope the new adaptation can achieve some of this alien feeling.

Thanks. It does sound worth a look.

For a second there I thought you were talking about the new one, and I said to myself “There’s no way that was legitimate!” Whooshed myself.

Stephen Colbert, barely restraining his fanboyishness, interviews the cast.

I’m rereading the book in preparation for the movie release, and I’m looking for opinions on the subsequent books. But in the interest of not hijacking this thread, I’ve started a new one.

Rolling Stone is reporting that the film’s release is being delayed, from December 18th of this year, all the way to October 1, 2021. (Note: this news has just been tacked onto a previously-published article about the trailer.)

Noooooooo!

On the one hand, this news really sucks because I’m looking forward to the movie.

On the other hand, I’d love to see it in a theater, and I don’t anticipate feeling like it’s safe to go to one for a year. So maybe this isn’t that bad.

On the third hand, it sucks for you guys outside the U.S. who have the pandemic under control better but are paying the price for our stupidity/selfishness.

Also, releasing now means a higher likelihood of poor box office returns, which means a lower likelihood of the second part ever being released. I’d rather them wait and get a strong showing so that the second part is more guaranteed.
