Anyone watch the pilot? I had absolutely no intention of tuning in but the Rays / Yankees game was giving me cramps so I thought some comedy might help.
I’d always been somewhat of a Zooey Deschanel hater (I know thems fightin’ words around here). Couldn’t stand her wide eyed, stupid bangs look (and why I can’t stand her clone, Katie Perry) and the only thing I’d seen her in was M. Night Shamalyan’s “The Happening” which I think speaks for itself. What a pleasant surprise. Not saying that it’s great or the premise is original or anything but she was really entertaining. Don’t know if that’s her usual schtick and I can see it possibly getting old after awhile but I thought she was funny and very engaging. The goofy roommates were a little over the top but had some funny moments.
I watched the first ep a few weeks ago via some on demand service a hotel I was at had. I thought it was pretty funny for what it was. (I also thought 2 Broke Girls was pretty funny for what that was, too so I guess I have bad taste.) Really like the idea of a douchebag jar. I know a lot of guys who would benefit from such a policy.
Huh. Didn’t think Zooey Deschanel had much about her that was hatable. But, i guess everyone can has something. She was great in Our Idiot Brother this year.
Anyway. I loved it! The opening scenes (with the visit to the boyfriend) felt flat and left me ready to be disappointed. After that the jokes kept coming and the chemistry among the leads was great. There were a lot of laughs (loved Coach’s problem talking to women) and the ending, while obvious, was very sweet. Overall, I enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing what happens in the show.
I was disappointed to read that Damon Wayans won’t be staying on the show. Hopefully his replacement will be just as funny.
I liked it as well. But in reading that Damon Jr won’t be staying I learned that they’ll be bringing in a love interest for Jess. I figured, based on the Pilot that the love interest was going to be Nick (the guy who’s girlfriend (The Waitress) dumped him 6 months ago). That tells me they’re probably going to set up a Jim and Pam dynamic where he’ll swoon over her but end up being ‘the friend’. I’m guessing when the time is right, either organically or when the they need the ratings in a few seasons, they’ll put the two of them together, but it certainly seemed to me like they were laying the groundwork for him to be interested in her. OTOH they could play it more like Monica and Chandler* where it’s very subtle so if they decide not to go that route, you’d never even notice it.
*If you look at the early seasons of Friends you can tell that there was something between the two of them, but it seems like the writers set it up so that in syndication people like me could say ‘look, you can already see a spark even in the pilot’ but if they never did anything with it, you wouldn’t even bat an eye at them being overly friendly with each other.
I liked it. I think Jess has the potential to get annoying (trying too hard weirdness? Trying too hard cuteness? Just plain trying too hard?), but I like her roommates.
I thought it was really good. And seemed more “seasoned” than most pilots…none of the stuttering, okay what do we do now kind of feeling. The way she took it over the top a couple times (telescoping glasses at a cute guy etc.) I could relate to so saw it as Fine. I’ll be watching this one.
Watched it because I found the trailers to be cute. Found it to be tedious and boring. Nothing made sense and I don’t think three guys like that would have put up with her shit. The ending was a whole bunch of crap. The worst of it was that because Fox ran so many ads for it, they pretty much gave away the whole of the jokes beforehand and they weren’t that great.
I was looking forward to this show, and man, was I disappointed.
I found none of the main characters likeable, believable, or interesting.
And everyone seemed to be trying way, way too hard to be amusing.
However…virtually every show’s very early episodes seem to suffer from this phenomenon. Maybe once everyone settles into their characters, and takes a step back from the look-how-funny/clever/wacky-I-am characterizations, It will evolve into a quality sitcom.
I wasn’t terribly impressed but I didn’t hate it either. First episodes are always shaky and exaggerated it seems since they have to get everyone’s character banged into your head in 20 minutes so maybe it’ll get better. Less telescoping glasses and removed shirts.
I found Jess to be the least amusing part of the show.
Thank you!! I thought I was the only one. It was JUST the pilot. Three single men and none of them are flirting or hitting on her? They don’t right away see the potential of having a female roommate? A guy just stands her up, (seriously, the guy was SUCH a huge dick that he didn’t cancel, he just leaves her thinking they will meet up), and then they all go to sing to her? Because in the five minutes they’ve known each other, they’re willing to do that in a crowded restaurant? Not that I couldn’t see them going to get her, and talking her up, but singing to her?
Eh, the singing was obviously unrealistic but the point was just “Look at how devoted these people are now! Isn’t that great? Ok, now carry that dynamic into the rest of the season so we can move along without having to spend half the season showing the roommates slowly growing to accept and care for Jess.”
Which is why comedy pilots usually kind of suck. They have to force everything with a hammer so they can get into the “normal world” of episodic comedy.
