It was terrible. I was cringing all throughout. Zooey needs to stick to supporting movie roles, and music.
Well, watching Episode 2 today - it was kind of entertaining, but not funny. It’s a comedy, right?
It wasn’t tonight.
I wasn’t even entertained. I was annoyed. The submissiveness and spinelessness regarding her ex was asininely over the top. It irked me to the point where I stopped watching at the “drive around the block again” bit. I may not watch the show again.
Well stpauler, I’m dumb that way, too. That’s why I thought it was funny. Watched it again tonight and still think the show’s funny. And unfortunately that is the way some people are about their ex’s so I didn’t have a problem with it.
I, too, watch Raising Hope and think it’s hysterical. “…maybe THAT’S why she knows so much about cheese.” I’m really enjoying this season.
I am *trying *to give the new fall shows a chance. I got through 15 minutes of this last night and said, “oh, life is too short,” turned it off and went to fold laundry, which was more entertaining.
Aaaaaaaand I’m back to the Zooey hatin’; wow, that didn’t take long.
I didn’t like this episode at all but to be fair it’s not all ZD’s fault. The writing was crap, the situation stupid and neither funny not deserving of sympathy. The new roomate is dull as dirt and the dude that played her ex made me stabbly on first sight irrespective of his douchey character.
I might check back in a few weeks if it hasn’t been cancelled. Sometimes new shows need several weeks for things to gel so maybe it still has a chance but as it stands now, hell no.
I like the show quite a bit. I makes me laugh. I love ZDs character because she is so unabashedly weird, and I appreciate weird.
Where it does miss the mark, if at all, is that the roommates at this point seem little more than bad male stereotypes. Although I do find the one pining after his ex to be somewhat sympathetic. I think they need to work on developing the character of these guys into something more than just, ‘‘the doormat, the jock and the douche.’’
This week’s episode felt almost like a second pilot – introducing the new roommate, having Jess get out from under her feelings for her ex… and NOW they can get down to the business of putting out a weekly sitcom. I think the chemistry among the cast is promising, and there’s a potential for a good show here once they get their footing, which can sometimes take a little time. I’m not writing it off yet.
Clearly the producers were betting on Damon Jr.'s other show not getting picked up. I’m as surprised as anybody that it did.
The second episode drove me crazy. She goes into her ex-boyfriend’s house to get her stuff, but none of them go with her to support her and to help her carry stuff. And then she comes out of the house carrying a bunch of stuff, including the 32" flat-screen TV in her hands and they’re still sitting in the car. What, none of them thought to get out of the car and help her out?
As for this guy, I think the character might have worked better if he was gay but in denial.
They sang to her last week – what else do you want??
Yes. There was an article on him this morning in the free tabloid I found on the bus. Sounds like he shot “The New Girl” pilot before ABC had aired any of “Happy Endings.”
The only thing I liked in this week’s episode was the introduction of Winston, played by Lamorne Morris. I’ve liked his work in commercials ever since I saw his Miller Lite ad.
Got through half this episode and turned it off.
I must be missing something, as I did not find a single line even slightly funny…so, carry on one and all, but this will be the last time the show is on my DVR.
He played Calvin’s boyfriend on Greek for a while, so I have trouble buying him as straight since that’s where I recognize him from. (no idea about the actor, not that it’s relevant anyway)
I enjoyed this episode, although the moment she picked up the basketball I called that she would be breaking the tv.
I preferred the Coach character. I don’t like this new guy so far.
I LOVE ZD in anything.
That said, it seems like non douche guy / non black guy is slated to have romance with her. No comment.
My only thought is, how is the super hot Wayans guy in TWO SERIES!?!
We were underwhelmed.
There are 3 types of sitcom-ish shows. The boring, conventional ones (e.g., a schlub and a babe) like Everybody Loves Raymond. The unconventional best exemplified by the wonderful Community and then there’s the “other” like Louie. The latter is part sitcom/part something else entirely. (And it works!)
TNG is not even something else entirely. It’s just a half hour of something on TV. No laughs, no new ground, no characters worth anything. What a let down.
I recently read (most of) a book where they gave a series of writers a sitcom premise and asked each how they would develop it. Some of these guys were clearly terrible (but successful). Lots of stories about how US TV really works. I can see how a show like this gets made now. Being a good writer (or anything) has nothing to do with getting stuff on the air.
It got picked for a full season this week.
I love ZD and will drink her kookaid til the show dies. Especially if she sings.
But, the second episode was weaker. Douche guy is not great, although he sucked less this time. Sad guy was not as strong, but his potential remains.
My favorite stooge, Wayans, was replaced by an extremely inferior black guy!!! I was wondering how Wayans was going to juggle two shows. I guess he made this pilot, not knowing if Happy Endings would get renewed. I wish they had found a way to keep him on both shows. I really miss him specifically, but I also think that they picked a crappy replacement who screwed up the group dynamic.
Zooey was great, but they made her a little bit too spineless this episode. Also, WTF!?!? She had four people in the car and not one offered to carry shit? I was yelling at my TV. Bad form.
-
You help your girl by demonstrating testosterone in front of her ex when she’s still weak from breakup.
-
You help your roommate move their shit out of the old place, especially if you article coveting some of it (TV).
