The new MST3K.

Anyone here watched the new MST3K on Netflix? What did you think of it? I find it to be a bit hit and miss. The songs are great, thanks in part to being written by Paul and Storm (Every Country Has a Monster and Concepts are up there with the best songs in MST3K history), and Gypsy’s voice is no longer grating, thanks to actually being voiced by a woman this time. I also like Hampton Yount as Crow. But, sometimes Jonah and the Bots drag on a joke too long. For example, in the episode Cry Wilderness, Jonah or Tom (I forget which) make a riff that Paul’s pillow is filled with maple syrup. If the joke had ended there, it would have been better, but it goes on. Joel, Trace, Mike Bill, Kevin and Josh knew when to end a joke.

I’m a bit iffy on Jonah as well. I was hoping he’d be a mix of Joel and Mike, personality-wise, but he’s more like a diet Joel.

Also, I don’t think Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt have much chemistry as the Mads.

What do you think?

I like it, but I found the second set of episodes to be inferior to the first season.

I’ve only seen the episode with Every Country Has a Monster, and I agree with what you said about this song. As for the episode, I liked it a lot. I really just wanted to say thanks for the reminder about this. I had forgotten about it.

To me it is easily the best of the Netflix reboots. That may not be saying much, but it is entirely watchable.

The host segments are sort of OK, which is much more than could be said for the host segments of the original after TV’s Frank left.

There is at least one thread on this when it dropped, which got bumped for the second season. They cut the host segments way back for season 2, but season 2 had more esoteric references than season 1, more like the original series.

My biggest complaint is that Felicia Day and Patton Oswald are too good at acting for their roles. The Mads shouldn’t be played with so much skill.

I like it.

I’m a huge Elliott Kalan fan from his podcast The Flophouse. He’s the head writer for this reboot, so if you are enjoying the jokes at the expense of bad movies, might want to check the podcast out.

Season Two of the reboot is available?

Huzzah!

Watched the first Netflix season. It was mediocre. There were way too many interruptions given the lack of actual commercial breaks. The Mads never seemed malevolent. Why the fuck is there a pretend live band? This ain’t Mos Eisley.

The riffed sections were pretty good. The first few episodes, it seemed like every third joke was facebook/snapchat/whatsapp related. Either this dropped off with time, or I got accustomed to it (or I’m an old man).
