Netflix Cancelling MST3K!

CNN evidently doesn’t remember that the show ran on the SciFi channel (now Syfy) for a few years.

It’s deja vu all over again!

It was never really that good. YouTubers give better commentary.

My view: The first set up episodes they released were great. The second season was legitimately boring. I was stunned at the difference. I think MST3K is kind of hit and miss and the second set of episodes were all miss.

I thought Joel has commented that they will find a way to end up elsewhere now?

Coincidentally, I was just talking to someone who said they only saw MST3K once and were disappointed that they weren’t giving actual serious commentary on the movie. Like, I dunno, talking about the acting and choices of locations and stuff? I think he missed the point of MST3K.

It’s cool if he just didn’t like it. Show has 12 seasons so it doesn’t have anything to feel ashamed about. But his complaint felt like someone watching Law & Order: SVU and wanting to know why more time wasn’t spent on healthy relationship advice.

I didn’t realize Netflix was pumping them out. I’ve been occasionally watching the MST3K channel and RiffTrax channel on Pluto TV. They’re usually good for 15-30 minutes of mindless fun before moving on to something else.

I mean, it’s not even funny. I get the appeal of having background noise while you’re doing something else (like on the computer), but there’s better options now, even for that.

I thought the first set was solid; haven’t seen the second season, though. The original MST3Ks are hit-and-miss, but, for the most part, they hit for me. I’m not an aficionado, but it’s a rare MST3K episode I’ll skip over. I find the commentary funny as shit, and if there’s Youtubers out there with better commentary, let me know. I’ll be glad to watch, but nothing hits that perfect mix of pop culture, silly humor, esoteric references, and just laugh-out-loud one liners MST3K does for me.

MST3K may be my favorite show, depending on what criteria I use. More shows would be good. But, since I watch about one episode every two weeks there is enough out there for about a seven year rotation, which is about right.

This is pretty much in line with Netflix’s pattern of cancelling a show after two seasons.

In general, I liked the show, but it’s alway missing something without Joel’s unique energy on the screen. And also I don’t like Felicia Day at all.

Wait did they have a SECOND season of the Netflix version?

Yes, and it was 40% the length of the first season, 6 episodes compared to 14 episodes of the first season. Also notable that was the only season NetFlix paid out of pocket for, since the first season was all KickStarter funds IIRC.

Bye Felicia! (sorry i couldnt resist)

Yep. Not coincidentally this is why I dumped Netflix.

Kinda sad, but not surprising.

The newer seasons were non-stop talking/riffing that it was annoying. I could barely understand or consider the joke because they never gave me (or the movie) a chance to breathe.

About as funny as Weird Al ie toddler funeral level.

I was excited about the Netflix version, but I never could get into it. Mike and Kevin and Bill are riffing perfection to me, and they are still doing Rifftrax at least.

FWIW a lot of Rifftrax episodes are on Amazon Prime streaming, and a lot of old MST3K episodes are free on YouTube. Just watched a Rifftrax titled Girl from Rio that was pretty hilarious.

Wow, how did they manage that? Did Amazon just pick up the streaming rights to a bunch of crappy cheap movies, and Rifftrax made a deal with them? I noticed none of them are the more mainstream movies that I thought Rifftrax was doing.

It was one of my favorite shows. Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt are two of my favorites. I never bothered to finish season 1.

I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes of the latest season. Mac and Me is hysterical even without their commentary, and they definitely added to the fun. The 2nd episode is a rip-off of Pacific Rim ingeniously titled Atlantic Rim and it is also a lot of fun. The rest weren’t too memorable tho.
