It’s the New Zoo Revue comin’ right achooo (Gesundheit!)
I haven’t seen this show in ages, but I still think that Doug is the Mack Daddy. Doug was a legendary exemplar of dork/genius chic, long before most of the world had heard of Weird Al Yankovic.
As if it weren’t enough to have the star power of Doug, this show also had Emmy Jo AND Charlie the Owl AND Henrietta Hippo AND Freddie the Frog.
The only think that sucked about this show was that it was cancelled. NZR FOREVER, BABY!!!
I loved this show as a child and I remember having the NZR coloring book and everything. One of our local public access channels here runs it in the morning every so often. I happened to stumble across it recently and was appalled at how horrible it was. I could hardly make it through 10 minutes, much less the whole show. Kid’s programming has REALLY come a long way!
Like voguevixen I chanced across this show when I was surfing really early one morning. Funny thing is that it was on EWTN, which is the "Christian Network.
It really was awful, thou I can see why it would appeal to fairly young kids.
My best recollection of this show is that Freddie was an early prototype for the really dumb turtle on that “Greg the Bunny” show on Fox. Now, if you want to get me going on classic children’s no-budget television, we need to talk about The Magic Garden. Where are those two ladies now, I wonder? Not to mention Sherlock the Squirrel, or the individual flowers that togther made up the Giggle Patch.
I had the honor of seeing an outtake from NZR one time that was quite hilarious. It might have been a kid show but the guys in the costumes had a warped sense of humor.
It involved Freddie performing oral sex on the owl.
