The Office 5.14 - Season Finale

I’m really pissed. That episode sucked. Pregnancy? Seriously?

A woman in a loving, stable relationship gets pregnant. Well, that’s neither dramatic nor comedic. There is no tension, no worries, and it’s not funny. It’s just pablum.

double post

triple post

I agree with every word of this. Non-office life events that are not funny should be left in the background. I feel the same way about any Jim-Pam wedding. We don’t need to see it.

We’ve covered this in previous threads. The company allows office romances (with disclosure and “love contract” discharge of liability). But in this situation, the branch manager was dating the branch’s sole H.R. person. The H.R. person is supposed to manage the professional problems between the manager and the rest of the office. There’s an inherent conflict of interest there that just cannot be overcome with a love contract. It would make the H.R. rep essentially useless.

This was a pretty boring episode. Only good moment for me was Toby’s doppelgänger

I loved Jim’s reaction to the pregnancy so much, with the tearing up and everything. I usually hate anything to do with babies, but this was so sweet. On paper, blah. As acted, WONDERFUL.

The thing with the Buffalo branch - horrifying. And why would Wallace tell them? Why?

Wallace has not exactly shown a propensity for being the brightest guy who makes the best decisions. Unfortunately for him, Michael reveals flashes of occasional brilliance that may make David feel that he has turned the corner and can be trusted, and of course Michael just does not know where to draw the line. I’m usually a huge fan of uncomfortable being funny, but the scenes with Michael and Holly were almost painful to watch. The pregnancy was predicatable after the obligatory asking about pregnancy before the x-ray.

What does 1 fiance plus 1 lover equal? One whore.

Loved the episode. Dwight’s friend’s remarks to Angela were priceless.

The Holly and Michael thing was great, and I thought his explanation about how their relationship is going to go was very touching in a Michael sorta way.

Jim’s reaction to the pregnancy was pretty real. As mentioned above, I thought the acting was great.

And I’m really liking the nicer Dwight!

Why was Toby wearing a corporate shirt but Holly wasn’t? They’re both HR.

I like that they’ve done intimate moments like this and the proposal from a distance, like it would be vulgar to be up close to them. Jim was wonderful. And they way they both went from looking stunned to overjoyed–very real. And I went from thinking Jim needed to somehow kick Charles’s ass to putting it back into perspective against a new baby, just like Jim did.

“No one grabs these things for balance.”
“Well,…”

never mind

Boring episode, especially for a season finale. The last scene was well-played, if predictable (and I share other people’s concern about the triteness of the upcoming pregnancy plot).

Assuming this isn’t a whoosh, Toby was wearing a red, (presumably Scranton) t-shirt under his grey cardigan. He wasn’t wearing a black corporate shirt.

During the few beats of silence while Pam stared at Jim, several pornographic scenarios flashed through my mind.

Wow, how did I imagine Toby in a corporate shirt? Maybe it was his friend that he was talking to.

The show definitely needs more Holly.

Another thing that bugged me about the pregnancy reveal was that it was a surprise to them. That’s another sitcom cliche. Have they been using birth control? If not, then why are they surpised? If the HAVE been using birth control, then why are they happy. It makes no sense for them to be both surprised and instantly happy. If they were trying to get pregnant, then there should be happiness, but no surprise (and they should have already known). If they were trying NOT to get pregnant, then there should be a lot more initial shock and fear.

I figured they *have * been using birth control, as Pam was pretty sure she wasn’t pregnant, but once circumstances evade that and they are presented with a pregnancy they both instantly realise it’s a good thing, (and can see in each others eyes that they feel the same way).

Sitcom birth control is incredibly unreliable, isn’t it?

I don’t buy that they would both be instantly happy about a pregnancy they’d been trying to avoid. It takes a while to process to that point.

Maybe they recently decided to go off BC and try to get pregnant but didn’t expect it to happen for a while. They were shocked that it happened so soon.

I totally agree that Wallace was irredeemably stupid to confide in Michael. I am also very worried that the baby will kill my favorite sitcom. When has a new baby ever made a sitcom better?
