Clearly the whole Nellie thing is absurd. Of course you can’t just become “manager” in a large company by squatting in the manager’s office.
Most likely Robert California is just letting Nellie run around like a nutjob because she’s Jo’s friend and what real harm can it do? She doesn’t control payroll or budgets of any kind. People won’t get raises on her say so.
And he will probably allow it to continue so when Andy comes back (from what should be a legitimate sick / PTO day), he will use the situation as one of his weird “tests” to see if Andy is willing to fight for his rightful job.
I hated Nellie until the very last scene where she admits to the camera that she’s not that smart, doesn’t work that hard, etc. “It’s the American way!”
I haven’t watched this series since sometime last season or maybe after the first ep of this season, as I thought it had pretty much turned into the typical show that has passed its shelf life date. I watched this episode today, though, just to see if the show still sucked ass. Surprisingly, they seem to have ramped up the writing a bit. I thought the Nellie character was much more in line with what Ricky Gervais first envisioned with his show, and I thought she was spot on as an overbearing, irritating and clueless boss. It was great (and somewhat shocking) seeing Georgia Engels. She can still deliver her lines with maximum effect and stole her scenes quite handily. I actually laughed aloud several times during this episode.
So tell me: is this the exception, or has the show rebounded somewhat?
Who apparently won’t be on the show beyond this season
I still don’t think it’s anywhere near the quality of the first three seasons, and the show is often completely off-the-wall unrealistic, but taken on its own, it’s better than it has been.
I look forward to seeing Andy fight for his job. Andy was the logical way to go for the new manager. He’s not as cartoony as Michael Scott. He’s not as incompetent, but having a boss like California creates a certain dynamic that I find interesting. I believe the season’s best episode was, ‘Mrs California’, and I think it was better than anything from last season, and probably seasons before that.
My least favorite episodes where ‘Gettysburg’ and ‘Test The Store’, I think I dislike them both equally. ‘Gettysburg’ had it’s movements, like learning about the history of Schrute Farms, ‘Test The Store’ had Jim with eyeliner on.
I think this has been an overall good season, it can stand up to any season past the first three.
When Erin said no i thought they were going to have Nellie as manager and Andy as receptionist, something that he loved doing a few episodes ago but couldn’t stick to because he was the boss.
Catherine Tate isn’t exactly what I would call an “attractive woman”. And her “Ere now wot’s all this, gov’nah!” personality doesn’t exactly sweeten the deal.
She’s a regular in the credits, not a guest star, so she’s gonna be around for a while, I fear.
I loved the actress on Who, but cannot stand her character on this show. She actually makes me appreciate Robert California, and I don’t like Robert California.
I did like the part where she made Pam take a nap and then closed with “and when you wake up you will make more money” but that’s about the only thing the character’s said or done that I care for in any of her appearances.
