The Office; Niagara 10/08/09 (open spoilers)

Or possibly the Maid of the Mist employs a justice of the peace specifically to perform weddings (and free the real captain to worry about piloting the boat). Or perhaps Jim and Pam arranged to have a justice of the peace on board? Or am I over-analyzing this?

Didn’t Jim say that it was his ‘Plan C’ back-up plan? Not that something like that could be arranged, however I would think the documentary crew would perhaps play a factor in allowing them to do things other people wouldn’t be able to.

I loved the Oscar / Kevin scene. Oscar was so superficial and Kevin was so sweet

Here is my take on a few things

Married on the Maid of the Mist: Even if the Captain could not officially marry them… they were going to the church after to be officially registered and married by a minister. This was their quiet romantic moment. They knew even if it wasn’t leagal they were going to another wedding to seal the deal.
Jim spills the Beans: Jim was being Jim and liek an ass began joking around about the fact that Pam can’t raise her glass completely forgetting that not everyone was in the know.
When confronted, he panicked. Now he fears he is becoming Michael. I loved when he asked if being a manager made you say stupid things… he wasn’t just referring to Michael’s stupidity.

The Puke Wave: I liked it. It was Gross stupid and funny. Sorry, but when the sight or sound or smell hits you… hard not to join along. Well, except for Creed and Dwight.

The Kleenix shoes were stupid, but the payoff in the community ice… pricless, considering Kevin’s former shoes were deemed a health hazzard by managment.

Oscar and Kevin: I liked the fact that, for once on TV, the Gay guy is offended by someone being mistaken as his SO and the straight guy is flattered.

As dumb as Andy’s ripped Nards were, his expressions the moment he did it and when hobbling to Pam’s room are hilarious. Plus, is there something else about Meridith we don’t know when she reveals she too knows what its like to have genitals ripped off?

The Twins: Dumb Dwight reaction, but the real joke is in Micahel’s quick dumping of pretty girl he actually had a chance with. The calavier way he walked away saying “it’s twins…you understand” Once again burning his bridges before he knows if he can even cross first.

Yes it was a goofy show. But so what?

I enjoyed it. No, it’s not realism… the show is a comedy and will from time to time venture off the path for a laugh. I accept it.

And the captain is the only guy onboard who ever drives the boat? I hope he doesn’t have a heart attack or something.

IMO absolutely the worst episode of the show I’ve seen in some time (saving a space for the “Prince Family Paper” episode with the extended boredom of having the office rank hot actresses, or perhaps the “Chair Model” ep.).

Beyond the many flaws already raised here (I’m in full agreement with MyFootsZZZ’s excellent points about losing track of the long-term characterization), even basic things like editing appeared sloppy and hap-hazard. For example, there were times I had trouble figuring out how characters got from one point to another in the same scene. Compare, for example, the late-night party where Andy tore his scrotum with last year’s party in “Cafe Disco”; Cafe Disco established separate episodes in the same room with a real sense of space, while last nights similar scene looked rushed and shuffled. The parody of the Youtube video was bad in its own right, but waiting on every character to go down the aisle (some more than once) felt like the writers were padding out the hour. And although the joke about the twins was cute enough, it might have worked better if the payoff had been delayed–say by inserting an unrelated scene between the shot of Michael abandoning his date for the twins and seeing them in the booth; as it was, the joke felt rushed.

All in all, quite a disappointment IMO.

It really felt like this episode that the writers had too much to go into a 30 minute episode but not enough to go in a 1 hour episode. But I think all the good parts were enough to overrule the bad parts.

Another scene that went nowhere was Michael in Grandma Sylvia’s room. Why was he there? Was he hoping she’d let him sleep in her room? We didn’t see him ask – he just fiddled with the TV, made the Memaw Sylvia/Sylvio comment and left.

Where did he sleep anyway?

And why was Andy on the floor in Pam’s room? Was that before or after he went to the ER? Did he go to the ER?

I didn’t see the whole episode though – maybe it wasn’t as disjointed as I remember.

Andy went to the ER. We saw Pam drive him there and he had a walker that he presumably got there at the ceremony.

Loved how Michael and Jim were both amazed that it wasn’t Michael that fucked up and the let secret slip. Also loved how Dwight banged the Maid of Honor and Michael banged the mother of the bride.

What’s with Angela bagging on Jim and Pam both for having dated a co-worker prior to each other? At least it wasn’t both at the same time.

Well, the grandmother was at the wedding, so presumably he got her to change her mind about leaving before it.

Didn’t he say he slept next to the vending machine to Pam’s mom?

I think it was after.

I thought it was pretty good for a wedding episode. The problem is that it was indeed a wedding episode and, of course, those are fraught with peril.

I didn’t catch that. What did she say?

“They both treat the office like a 1970’s key party.”

I think they would’ve been better off “turning the cameras off” for the actual ceremony. I don’t think it would’ve been out of line for Jim and Pam to say “You guys can come to the rehersal and reception, but stay out of the church.”

Then the writers could’ve focused on the pre-wedding antics, and then some funny reception antics. Instead, it just ended up, like many have said here, being confusing and feeling like they padded it with a musical/dance scene.

They’d better have one next year, when they’re deluged with all the couples who saw the show and thought, “that looks so romantic.”

Well, I liked it! Yeah there were some instances of stretching credulity to the max, but it’s just a silly sitcom. Just consider the premise of the whole episode. The Scranton office shut down for two business days for a “company wedding”. Who ever heard of that?! So the whole show started implausibly. After that, it’s just silliness. To me, the funniest moment was Dwight’s “twins” – I admit I did not see that coming. It was perfectly timed to minimize the chances that you’ll figure out the joke ahead of time … “Aren’t they magnificent?!” BAM! Two overweight twin guys! I laughed so hard! The dancing down the aisle was a bit much at the end, but if they’re gonna do that, then they should’ve shown Pam doing it too. I was waiting for that payoff, but it never came. This was an excellent episode in my book.

The episode got a lot of good reviews.

I’m sure it was a difficult episode to pull off, especially when filming different locations. I know it’s impossible to hire all the same actors who have had minor roles in single episodes. I know there’s an attempt to win people over with a ‘broader’ sense of comedy.

It’s funny that ‘The Office’s’ mockumentary styling’s are being replicated, (YES, I’m aware that it was originally the UK Office), while this show’s built up a history of falling into ‘traditional sitcom’ territory from time-to-time.

If there’s any benefit to the writers hits-and-misses with it’s individual viewer; There are several episodes you can give a ‘pass’ to, because you understand the writers plight to satisfy a very wide range of fans. You can even see this in our weekly threads about the show. Everyone has there own idea of what’s appealing, (and what’s not), about each episode. Some cater to one side more than the other. There have been times in the shows history where I’ve been surprised that we, (the audience) were left ‘out-of-the-loop’, only to realize that certain situations present a conflict in catering to those who like a comedy driven episodes, and those of us who’re hoping to get the weekly scoop in the lives of these people with a humorous slant.

IMO the show seems to ‘whimper’ the most when there’s some ‘grand-scale’ events. I think Happy Lendervedder has the right idea, but I would have rather Jim and Pam not to have posed the idea of the two eloping in ‘Cafe Disco’, (still, one of my favorite episodes, and an episode I’m glad CJJ* brought up because of it’s parallels), and perhaps run off to have small, yet unique and semi-planned wedding. Or I maybe would have rather have not seen the wedding at all. Or maybe Just clips as the two describe it in a Talking Heads session. But then the 'i-HEART ‘Jam’ fans would feel cheated.

I hope Pam’s water breaks, in the middle of the night, and we Andy not the one driving her to the hospital. In any case, despite the reviews, I hope the show falls back on track in pleasing me, specifically.

Bingo, Michael was trying to be nice and fix Jim’s mistake be getting Memaw to come to the wedding. As for shutting the Scranton office down for 2 business days; that was necessitated by the plot and requires alot less suspension of disbelief than some of other stuff that goes on at Dunder-Mifflin (Ryan being allowed on company property at all, the buyout of Michael Scott Paper, etc).

I was hoping the last scene would be David Wallace showing up at the Office and wondering where everyone was.

Yes, and we were told two weeks ago that Michael had decided to give people two days off from work so they could attend the wedding at Niagra Falls. So even if one considers it implausible (and I agree it’s no more difficult to believe than plenty of other things that have happened on the show), this plot point was set up in advance.
