The Office, Trivia, Jan. 12, 2012

Not a terrible episode. I liked both plots. And I liked the Einsteins’ victory, although it was predictable.

I haven’t watched regularly since Michael left. As much as he made me cringe, or made me hate him, he was a great character, and I miss him.

I watched last night because I was curious about the trivia contest. I’ve only been to one bar that holds trivia contests, with my son in Seattle a few years back. It seems that the show got it right – people take their trivia very seriously. And the clever team names – I liked that.

I like how Robert dealt with Dwight. After trying with the phony medal, he finally treated him like an adult, deserving of some respect. Or at least that’s how it seemed to me.

I liked the “Who came up with E=MC[sup]2[/sup]?” question. “And a point for everyone…oh wait, except for the Einsteins.”

I see Robert as someone who likes to be sneaky and manipulative. He has others do his dirty work for him. After trying everything to blow Dwight off he finally had to just be upfront and honest as that was the only way he was going to get rid of Dwight. At least that’s my take on it.

I liked this episode, although I’ve noticed there’s a trend this season that Robert is constantly giving Andy high sales goals that he constantly has to struggle to meet. If wonder if the writers are going anywhere with this or if it’s a plot device, so if they decide to make someone else office manager they can say Andy was demoted because he couldn’t meet Robert’s sales quotas.

It kind of bugged me that Robert made Dwight fly/drive all the way to Florida to interview for a position that he wasn’t going to give him to begin with. I figured they were going to go somewhere with that after Gabe mentioned all the traveling, otherwise that was just a long setup for a (actually pretty funny) single joke. OTOH, I could see Robert honestly wanting to interview Dwight but then just changing his mind at the last second and blowing him off. Also, it bugged me that Dwight didn’t know what was going on the second Gabe told him the interview was with him. Again long setup (all the stuff about the toilet) and Dwight didn’t see it coming.

Wasn’t the setup that Dwight was surprising Robert down there? Robert had given him an insincere offer to talk sometime and Dwight decided to fly down to Florida to take him up on the offer.

But I did like how Dwight metaphorically pushed Robert into a corner and made him be honest.

Dwight was not going to give up until he got a straight yes or a no. I kind of liked Dwight in this episode. And I was starting to hate him from his douchy behavior in recent episodes.

I loved the stinger at the end where the Einsteins tried to play again and got everything wrong. Fluke indeed Kevin.

What city did Ray Charles sing about? “SEE-attle.” Tacky, but funny.

I liked this episode quite a bit. But I was rather surprised that Dwight assaulted and more or less kidnapped Gabe, in the lobby of this posh office building, with the receptionist watching, but nobody called security or even protested.

I couldn’t tell if she was scared of Dwight or figured Gabe had it coming (considering she knows him about as well as we do).

There was a very nice, very subtle joke in case anyone missed it. During the scene where Gabe was interviewing Dwight, you can see a framed medal on a shelf behind Gabe’s desk. I noticed that and wondered at the time what it was. And then Robert pulls out one almost identical to it towards the end of the episode trying to appease Dwight. Apparently Gabe couldn’t see through Robert quite as well as Dwight did.

“Your wish is my command.”
“It was a command.”

Great catch!! Now …for the win … what was the name of the actress in the French movie that Kevin knew because she exposed herself. I’m just curious.

Marion Cotillard.

You’re a perfectly fine toilet. I’m just an extraordinary piece of crap.

I don’t miss Michael at all btw.

The series isn’t what it was in it’s prime, but this season seems better than the last, (so far IMHO).

I don’t mind Pam being gone for a while either.

I agree with all of that.

As do I. Though I knew I wouldn’t miss Michael and I had forgotten Pam was part of the show (how her character has fallen…).

Still got nothing on seasons 1-3 though.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who immediately added it my Netflix queue…

What movie was that again?

Kevin’s answer was “Les Jolies Choses” which Netflix lists as “Pretty Things”.

ETA: Netix doesn’t have it, “saved” section for this one.
