As any of you who’ve actually read my baseball-related posts (all two of you – hi!) would know, I’m no expert by any means. But I do enjoy the baseball chatter, and given this article I ran across today and the poor state of my beloved Dodgers, it seems as good a time as any to begin discussing the rumors.
So, what are the chances of the Dodgers successfully trading Andruw Jones for, say, Chipper Jones, Brandon Webb, Ryan Theriot, Manny Ramirez and cash?
I’ve become convinced recently that (and the linked article seems to agree) the Rockies have decided that Matt Holliday is going to be too expensive to keep. If they trade him, they should make it contingent on the other team also taking Todd Helton, who’s career is tanking faster than Michelle Wie’s. He’s making almost $17M a year to hit seven homers and drive in 27 in almost half a year. Every important stat of his is going straight downhill and has been for a couple of years.
I also think the Rocks will trade current closer Brian Fuentes, maybe to the Phillies, who have offered one of their top pitching prospects. Fuentes started the season as the setup man, and only gained the closer job when last years phenom, Manny Corpas, fell apart. Corpas has wicked stuff and is certainly the closer of the future. He’s only 25, while Fuentes is 32. I think this move may happen soon, before the All-Star break.
Let me see how Jones performs after he returns – that may be a better trade than you think.
Speaking of Jones, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we really need him back now. I was at the game yesterday, and Pierre went down with a knee injury. Hopefully not too serious, but with Furcal still out, we don’t have a lead-off hitter. I think the only thing that may be saving the team from foolishly trading our talented youth is the fact that the vets keep going down.
