The Event You’ve Been Waiting For!

**Picnic and Hiking at Watchung Reservation. (908) 789-3670. Noon-ish. **

Click on the link for directions. Meet at noon-ish on the lawn behind the Trailside Center. Bring your own picnic lunch.

The Trailside center opens at 1:00, and has some nice little exhibits. There are a variety of trails at the Reservation, so there should be something to suit everyone. Dogs are allowed, but must be on leashes. There’s supposed to be some decent fishing at Surprise Lake. Right next door is Watchung Stable. I think you can rent horses there. There are some nice roads to bike on around there. I keep hearing mixed reports on whether mountain biking is now allowed at the Reservation. If anyone knows the real scoop, please post!

If you are a wheel-less urbanite, I’m sure one of the suburban gas-guzzlers will be happy to give you a lift.

Supper and Festivities at The Cellar at the Cranford Hotel. 6:00 pm.

We have a semi-separate room. It’s non-smoking. The bar is nearby, and smoking is allowed there. The menu is American and reasonably priced. Ask for the Cecil Adams party. There will be several babies and kids there, so feel free to bring yours!

Here are driving directions that I did not write, but seem to be okay:
The Cellar, Cranford Hotel, 1 South Union Avenue, Cranford (908-276-2121) GSP to exit 137. Follow signs at exit for Cranford. This will place you on North Avenue in Cranford. Make 4th (or 5th?) left onto South Union Ave just past the train station. Pass under the tracks, the Hotel will be on the corner, between North and South Ave. Parking in street or lot on right.

Trains leave NYC every hour. Take the 5:14 (or 6:14, or 7:14…) Northeast Corridor train from Penn Station NY to Newark Penn Station. (Yes, they’re both called Penn Station. Sorry.) Or take the PATH to Newark if you’re a PATH kind of person. Then take the 5:35 (or 6:35 or 7:41…) Raritan Valley Line train 2 stops to Cranford. You’ll get there at about 10 of. Walk under the tracks, turn right, and you should find the Cranford Hotel within a block. Trains back leave at 6:58, 7:58, 8:58, 9:58 and 12:16. The 12:16 is the last train in. There is a 1:27 which leaves from Linden, if you can get somebody to give you a lift to the station. Check www.njtransit.com for more details.

Finally, I see this thread.

Assuming the OcDoperfest is still on the 19th, I will in fact be in New Jersey… attending a wedding with the boy.

Put me down as a DEFINITE, then print up thousands of cards with my name on them, then I’ll drop out and replace myself with someone more popular, and someone can reprint the cards again!

Sorry, it isn’t often someone living in Florida can make a voting joke about another state. I reality, you guys have fun, I hear Watchung is really nice.

Will gas masks be provided or should we bring our own? The toxic fumes in north NJ can get pretty bad. :slight_smile:

I’ve run into a snag, too, sort of.

My right foot is in a boot, owing to tendinitis. I had been thinking that walking on it was better for it as long as it didn’t hurt, but now I have my doubts. I’m going to have to call the doctor and see if it’s okay for me to come out and play with y’all.
