Working title: “Holy S***!! When did we get GOOD?”
I love the Steelers. Always have, always will. Some may call it a disease, but I just can’t escape it. I’ll always be a Stillers fan n’at.
Of course, I’m finding it much easier to love the Steelers this year. During the last few seasons it was incredibly difficult to stand by my team. But now, Kordell is no longer floundering, and his passing has been decent. He also has people to pass to, since Plaxico decided to pull his head out of his ass and be good. The running game, led by the Bus himself, is taking off and providing the primary offensive support. Our defense is, to put it bluntly, amazing.
Not to mention the fact that we’re 9-2 for the first time since 1983, as well as being best in the AFC.
Oh, and the new stadium’s awesome, too.
True, yesterday’s game was much closer that it should have been, but I’m more than willing to forget about it and keep cheering. Because if that game had happened last year, we would have lost it.
So, c’mon, Steelers fans! Post here, cheer here, talk about Ahron City and Primanti Bros. Sammiches! It’s cool to be a Steelers fan again (like it ever wasn’t)!
Some of us are old enough to remember 1983, Jester. As I recall, they won one more game the rest of the year, and got shellacked in the first playoff game.
I really want to be thrilled with the Steelers, especially with the Penguins going down the crapper the way they are. But so far they’ve won seven games against losing teams–and they probably should have lost yesterday–and two against inconsistent teams who are barely above .500. I’m a fan–hell, I’ve been a fan since back when they were winning Super Bowls–but I’m not going to really emotionally invest in them until I see some proof they can run with the big dogs.
It’s like love–the more you get burned, the harder it is to believe. The Steelers have burned me too many times
The Steelers have been good since last season. They just caught some bad breaks early on (the Kent Graham sack in the Cleveland game, the Ravens games, etc…) They looked good in the preseason, and had only one bad game this year with Jacksonville.
It helps that the receivers can catch passes now; it was revealed that the “adjustable” routes left Kordell and the wideouts guessing where the ball should go. It helps that the O line has stabilized and can throw blocks. Amos Zereoue is maturing into a great runner, just the perfect counterpoint to Bettis- he hits the hole and is gone in a flash.
The biggest test this year will be the next 2 games- the Jets fell last year, when they were expected to win, and the Ravens “win in Pittsburgh but lose in Baltimore” pattern would be nice to repeat.
Who was QB in '83? I think that Stewart’s maturation will be the difference.
I invest emotionally in the Steelers every year. What irks me are the fans who wait for something negative to happen, then use their terrible towels as crying towels. I had a friend come over for the Vikins game, and boy did he start cussing and crying when the Vikes scored. He got so mad- he made it a bummer to be in the room with him. I watch the games with optimism and hope, and I enjoy them even if the Steelers don’t do so well.
Even when I was living in other areas (Miami, DC, Tampa, and near Charlotte) I remained a Steeler fan. They have my undying loyalty.
That’s why this year is so SWEET!
Oh, by the way, Steelers fan since 1970.
Ack! Sorry, Steelerphan, I must have missed your thread. Still, you can never have too many, eh?
Grace, we might let you into our little club, if you’re willing to…err…ah, screw it, I’m not that creative. Welcome to Stiller phandom!
And MysterEcks, I agree that we still need to be cautious, and not sit here with SuperBowl fantasies dancing through our heads. But looking at this season, the majority of the Steelers’ games have been very solidly played and definitely won. True, we’ve played mainly losing teams, but our level of play against these teams has been quite high. Whether or not we “should have” lost yesterday isn’t important, after all, the Vikings didn’t lose due to some stupid error. We outplayed them until those two drives and the fumble, and then our defense stuffed Randy Moss on the 10 yard line. The vast majority of the game was practically a slaughter, and that’s mainly the way that we’ve been playing the entire year. So, call me young and naive, but I’ll always stick by the Steelers, and am having an even better time doing so this season.
Yinz Pixburgers should come dahn ta da muzeeum.
Seriously, we have on loan a Steelers PRIEST STOLE from the seventies that Fr. John Marcucci used to wear on Sundays during football season.
Even stranger-Fr. Marcucci is the pastor at my church.
(We also have an autographed jersey from Willie “Pops” Stargell).
I’d like to chime in and declare my unconditional love for the Pittsburgh Steelers. My story goes like this:
It was 1978. I was 8 years old and had recently learned the rules of football. During the NFL season, I studied the game and the teams. (I learned baseball when I was 6 and was immediately a Yankee fan. The Yankees were swept by the Reds and I couldn’t concentrate on any other sports until my Yankees actually won a championship. Luckily that happened the next year and then again in 1978. Now I was ready for a new sport.) The Giants and Jets were horrible. Everyone and their mother was a friggin’ Cowboys fan. I had to pick a team. Some kid at school always wore a Steelers jacket. I liked the logo and became a Steelers fan. All of my friends were Cowboys fan. As luck would have it, the Steelers and Cowboys met in the Super Bowl. My friend had a Super Bowl party. Everyone was invited except me, since I wasn’t a Cowboys fan. Every time something positive happened for the Cowboys, I would get a phone call and get laughed at. So there I was, watching the Super Bowl all by myself (with my parents), while my friends all were having fun watching the game together.
As you know, the Steelers ended up winning the game, which turned out to be one of the most memorable and satisfying moments in my childhood. The next day, all of my friends converted to Steeler fans, and the 4 that I still keep in touch with, maintain die-hard allegiance to the black and gold.
So Bradshaw, Stallworth, Swann, Harris, Bleier, Webster, Ham, Lambert, Greenwood, Greene, Blount, and Shell are all heroes to me. I seriously believe that if they didn’t come through for me at that moment, I wouldn’t be the same person that I am today.
So put me on the list as a Steelers fan forever.
(My only regret is Neil O’Donnell. The guy couldn’t throw a 10-yard out to the side line and we start him at QB? Horrible. It ruined our perfect record.)
I’m not saying you shouldn’t. Hell, I’m still a Pirate fan–best Double-A team in the major leagues, y’know. But I’ve learned to be a pessimist about such things…which, if nothing else, allows me to be either satisfyingly right or overjoyed when I’m wrong.

And against the Cowboys, which reallyhurt. But better to lose in the Super Bowl than to not even get there, in my opinion.
'nother steelers fan ringing in. I’m also not counting our chickens before the eggs, yaddy yaddy. Looks like bettis will miss this sunday. We should still beat the Jets. Now, I’m picking up both famous amos and ma`afala in my fantasy league. But who should I start? Im leaning toward amos as of now.

I disagree. I think that it’s much worse to get to the Super Bowl and then lose. After the Steelers lost to the Cowboys, and more recently when the Yankees lost to the Diamondbacks, I really wished my teams were eliminated in earlier playoff rounds. To lose in the Super Bowl or World Series is much more painful. Just my opinion.
