The omnibus 2008 college football thread

Only twice in the 10-year history of the BCS has the Pac-10 sent 2 teams to BCS bowls. Given the perceived weakness of the pac-10 this year, one would think that this would not be a good year to break that trend. On the other hand, we are talking about USC.

As much as I hate everything about USC, I’d love to see them play an SEC team for all the marbles.

I don’t think that TTech losing to Oklahoma is “likely”, but you never know.

Here’s what I think you need to have happen:

Texas loses to Kansas or T.A&M
OK beats TTech, but loses to OK State
The SEC championship game is a blowout.

So, to answer your question, no.

ETA: On further thought, #2 is a posibility, and #3 isn’t necessary (since the loser won’t be in the NCG, no way no how [I was thinking that they would need to drop below USC at #6]). So Texas getting beat again is your only unrealistic hurdle.

Logically (and I know that there isn’t room for logic when it comes to rankings), the only way I see this happening is if whoever wins the Big 12 south loses in the Big 12 championship game. Otherwise, if there’s a 3 way tie in the south, the one loss that the winner has will either be to Texas, Tech or Oklahoma. Any of those is more impressive than a loss to Oregon State. (Don’t get me wrong, I like the Beavers. I used to live in Corvallis.) The only way your matchup happens is if the voters decide to jump all 3 Big 12 teams. I don’t see the computers helping them that much.

Unless something really strange happens, I think a Big 12 - SEC matchup is almost a foregone conclusion at this point. Some people around here are talking about the possibility of an all Big 12 BCS championship game but I hope it doesn’t happen. It makes about as much sense as seeing Alabama - UF play back-to-back.

Or the talk two years ago of an Ohio State-Michigan rematch in the title game. And we know what happened that year in the NCG.

I think OU in Norman may be too much for Tech. After all, it took all they had to beat Texas at home, and that was on the last second. Then again, their 52-20 win over Okie State certainly gives me pause, especially since OU’s defense has been playing poorly lately.

As for the USC vs SEC scenario, I didn’t really think it was likely. I’ve just always wanted to see that matchup for the past few years, including this year’s 35-3 Ohio State massacre.

In 2000, my Huskers sort-of benefited from a wacky scenario. #2 NU had just gotten crushed by Colorado. Luckily, the pollsters saw it as enough of a fluke to only drop us to #5. Then in the next two weeks:

#2 Florida lost to Tennessee
#3 Tennessee lost to LSU the next week
#4 Texas lost to 2-loss Colorado

Nebraska made it back up to #2 and into the BCS title game! And then got slaughtered by Miami. Oh well.

It seems to me that Texas is going to be the odd man out in the South no matter how you slice it, unless you slice it so Tech loses two games and OU drops one to the pokes after beating Tech.

I can’t wait for the OU- Tech game; the two highest scoring offenses in the country (993 points between them). It will be interesting to see the line and the over under on that one.

Because a loss later in the season is more damaging than 1 early on, I think that Texas would be ranked above TT with only 1 loss.

Right, but isn’t it certain that OU would jump Texas after beating TT and O-State?

Yeah, OkU would, but TT would not.
I was nitpicking the “Tech loses two games” part.
OkU would have to lose another game for Texas to have a shot, I believe.

The reason Texas needs TT to lose twice is because if Oklahoma loses again then TT would have the tie breaker against Texas to get into the Big 12 CG.

It seems unlikely to me that TT would win the Big 12 championship game, and yet get passed over for Texas for the NC game.

Hmmmm, I seeeee… Good point…

(People might wonder if this embarassing incident is the one that shames me into no longer speaking about matters that I only have a halfway-solid grasp on. Sadly, the safe money says “No”.)

This has never queered my Posting-Jimmy! :stuck_out_tongue:

This site is projecting the NCG to be Texas vs. Florida. They don’t say how they come to this conclusion.

It looks like the answer is in post 209 above.

Not really about football, per se, but apparently there was a big brawlyesterday between the Florida State (FSU) football team and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

I really thought stuff like that only happened in B movies.

Here I was thinking it was racial. Preppy white guys fighting (mostly) minority players. I figured the frat boys wouldn’t come out to well in that exchange.

Turns out Phi Beta Sigma is a black frat.

Probably a safe bet regardless of color.

I wouldn’t call that a safe bet at any southern university. Not sure if FSU qualifies or not.
ETA: I take it back if we’re talking about starters, or members of the 2-deep.

I don’t know if the south is radically different from here in the midwest, but when I was at OU, the biggest toughest guy that I personally knew was our 4th string linebacker.

BTW, my brother went to FSU and still lives outside of Tallahassee. From everything that he tells me, FSU is very much a southern school.
