The Onion calls Quevanzhane Wallis a cunt.

“Dragged” is a term I borrowed from my black gay friends. It means getting flamed. When black women (or gay black men) flame your ass, they can really make it burn.

So smart and funny and witty.

This is what I hate about the apology…They said it didn’t fit with their normal style of humor when it TOTALLY DOES. The girl is an angel to most people who view her. She is Hollywood’s darling right now (and we all know what Hollywood eventually does to all of their darlings) but right now, she is pure sugar and cream. So that is the only way the cunt joke works. It truly is a compliment after all. I know the baby may not understand that, but she doesn’t strike me as an idiot. Surely someone can explain it.

Awwww. It feels so good to be home.

Lots of people, both black and white found it offensive. The outrage has been palpable. I just happened to be on a black board.
Actually, as other people have noted, this little girl has been called arrogant or perhaps a little too precocious for her own good. You know ..a little too sassy..a la her interview with Andre Leon Tally of Vogue.
Like I said, I don’t think her sassyness factored in. She hasn’t gained a reputation for arrogance, like say for instance, Jaden Smith did. Her overall rep has been of an angelic princess.

Uh… my question is… how would this 9-yo girl even KNOW about a tweet like that? I may be living a quiet life in Seattle, but I have an 8-yo stepson whose access to the media is under pretty strict control. He’s not on facebook, twitter, or elsewhere online without supervision. He doesn’t know about the shooting in CT. If his classmates do, no one’s said anything in school. To me, this is what parents are for.

I would assume that an actress that young is also similarly limited in mass-media consumption. She may be an actress, but she’s still 9. Are people really telling me that she’s going to see a tweet calling her a cunt and freak out? Who is showing her twitter or The Onion? Are people jumping out of the bushes holding signs that say “cunt” in front of her? Am I missing something here?

Please don’t give Fred Phelps any new ideas.

Yes, and yes. I haven’t seen the movie, but everybody seems to agree she’s adorable and seems very sweet. That was the joke. Unlike, say, Anne Hathaway - who everybody liked a couple of years ago but hates now for reasons I can’t quite grasp. (And I say that as someone who found her kind of annoying at the Oscars.) I suppose we could quibble about whether she’s world famous now or merely a movie star whose face was on TV sets all around the world last night and who now has a full film career in front of her at the age of 9, but I think “world famous” will do in a pinch. Let me know if you plan to explain why either of those things matters.

She’s going to google it. She will google her name and see it.

I’m guessing the Oscar nominated actress is more likely to be eating meat than the guy writing anonymous tweets for the Onion.

Eh, I’m sure there are much worse things written about Q in the darker corners of the internet. I’d imagine her parents keep her off the internets, but even if they don’t, I doubt The Onion thing will be in the running for the most upsetting thing she’ll find, and that some of the stuff will be actual insults.

Is this the interview you are referring too? People think she is a little too sassy? WTF?? Yes she is precocious, confidant and her projection/diction is mature, but she is an oscar-nominated actress . . . I don’t see how anyone gets “too sassy for her own good” out of that.

I’m not saying you’re lying, SleuFeets, because Nzinga has said the same thing. It just really surprises me.

Oh, yeah. I’m with you. I am confident her mom will explain anything that needs explanation. I was just letting SweetPotato know that it is a bit unlikely that a star won’t hear about a mini scandal with their name attached.

@Gestalt; The more jaded and cynical among us get annoyed by child actors in general. Any kid that acts like a grown up can be a bit…much. But I can’t stress this enough…as far as I have seen, Q’s overall rep has been as simply ADORABLY SWEET AND BEAUTIFUL. Everyone loves her and it is painfully obvious that the Onion was playing off that. Like Frylock said, the Onion is NEVER saying what it means and meaning what its saying.

Would you mind telling us which avenues of black political thought you’re talking about? I am interested, and I’ll probably even understand.

I think

Reporter: “How did you feel about when The Onion called you a cunt?” :derpdederpderp:

Is also likely.

By the way–Welcome to the SDMB. I hope you stick around and become part of the discourse here.

Please do take some kindly advice from an old hand however–opinion doesn’t equal fact around here. If you are trying to convince us that something has racist implications, you must adequately and coherently explain why or people will regard you as a crank. And when you dismiss someone’s opinion on a race-related matter because they are not black, you also seem like a crank.* So you may be having 5 conversations at once, but you’re not “doing alright.” Not yet, anyway.

 • Yes, you did do that to MOL, whether you want to admit it or not. Which of course was very amusing to all of us who know that she is black.

Watched that video just now, which is the first time I’ve ever heard her speak. She seems like a typical, slightly bratty nine-year-old. In her defense, the interviewer was asking some pretty stupid questions.

In his defense, what the fuck else are you supposed to ask a nine-year-old about… her long journey through life? And the sooner she gets used to fielding brainless questions, the better. The press pretty much treats all celebrities like nine-year-olds.

Let’s ask the President!

I wasn’t really paying attention to the show, but wasn’t there a joke about Amy Adams running on stage and attacking someone? Seems like the exact same kind of joke. They weren’t saying Amy Adams is a violent psycho, quite the opposite.

The main distinction to me is not race or gender, but age. It is plausible that a kid could be hurt by something like this, not only by misunderstanding the intent, but just hurt by the words themselves even if she does understand it meant the opposite. That is something to think about before making such a joke, although it doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t.

Then too, it is also plausible that she would fully understand and not be hurt by the joke at all. Perhaps finding it funny herself.

I assumed the Onion was trying something like:

“It has just been reported that QW was seen kicking a puppy backstage!”

“The Youngest Diva on record, Quevanzhane Wallis, demands that her bathtub be filled with skittles at the end of every day on the set.”

I guess now we know why everyone else seemed afraid to say it.

(Another sista weighing in, just as a warning to the unsuspecting!)

I like the way Q said “yes, ma’am” on the news clip I saw of her yesterday. Made me think she’d been brought up old school. And I was stoked when I heard she’s going to be Annie. I’ve always envisioned Annie as a little black girl.

The tweet was not LOL funny to me, but it did make me smile in the way the Onion usually does.

Just as some people will certainly find anything to get worked up about–and dayum, are they are annoying!–there are just as many who will push the limit, just to provoke. And they can be annoying too. But I don’t think this was one of those instances. The Onion tweet was fine.* Seth McFarland, you kind of annoyed me though.
*I think the reaction was to be expected. As Magiver said, the “joke” doesn’t do well without the context, which is missing on Twitter.

(I’m kind of glad that I am not allowed to “recreate” on the internet at work. I woulda been very unproductive today otherwise!)

Twitter is a game changer. Used to be a time that the Onion could crack a joke about 9-11 on the 9-11-01, and when people are outraged, too bad.

Nowadays, the CEO sees millions of people unfollowing on twitter and he panics and apologizes.

Sweet mother of Og, does anyone have a decoder ring? Because I have no idea what in the ever-loving blue fuck that this means.
