I laughed too. I thought it was exactly the kind of over-the-top, non-malicious, offensive thing the Onion is good at. They’re not attacking her personally, there’s not hate or anger in the tweet. Its just the absurdity that anyone would call a cute 9 year old kid a cunt. Its the same with dead baby jokes
I’m starting to wonder if anyone would’ve paid attention (or as much attention) to the tweet if it hadn’t been for McFarlane’s joke as mentioned earlier in the thread. There was a lot of upset and disgust in the social media world already for him “sexualizing” a nine year old girl, so I think that may’ve primed the pump, as it were. (As it is, there’s already a lot of rejoicing and nods of “good” over the apology.)
Well actually I’m glad this happened. Maybe now The Onion can start doing real satire like Mad Magazine does.

This was a pretty funny tweet, IMO, and I’m seriously disappointed in Steve Hannah. I hope he isn’t in charge for much longer at The Onion, as he obviously doesn’t “get” humour as much as he should.
I actually thought that was a little strange for the Onion as well. It seems as if they’ve just started relying on shock jock tactics as opposed to actually writing a decent joke.

I have no trouble imagining him doing a joke about how his daughter’s friend is an asshole because he wanted more juice or something. Naming the kid wouldn’t work there because nobody would have preexisting knowledge of the child (and even if he used a name, you wouldn’t know if he’d invented it or not).

I don’t really think it’s a good comparison in two ways: the kid’s probably fake and nobody knows who it is anyway, and the Onion tweet wasn’t making fun of Quvenzhané.
