The Open Championship (Golf) - Discussion

Despite Dinsdale’s pleas, I couldn’t run a pool this major championship. I am pretty sure I will be out of pocket over the weekend.

Anyways the Open Championship starts tomorrow, very early tomorrow if you live in the US. ESPN starts coverage at 4 am edt tomorrow. 4 AM!! Set your DVR’s

Weather is supposed to be crappy all weekend, especially tomorrow and Friday.

Tiger’s is part of the early/late wave on the first two rounds, while Mickelson is in the late/early wave. Scotland’s weather can be fickle, there is a good chance that one wave will get better conditions than the other wave.

My picks to win the Open Championship: either Ernie Els or Luke Donald. I don’t think it is going to be an American.

I was going to pick either Tom Watson or Greg Norman, but it looks like the Great White Shark is not going to Scotland. Too bad. I hope another oldie can make a run, though it looks like it won’t be Seve Ballesteros either.

Norman WD last week.

Unfortunately, Seve is not doing very well.

I’ll take Tiger Woods and Justin Rose. Having to grind through nasty weather will help Tiger keep his focus.

Phil Mickelson will never win the Open Championship. His game is built around country club conditions.

I’ll take a flyer on Lee Westwood.

As I go to bed, John Daly in the world’s worst pants sits at -7 through 11 holes. Just tearing it up. Didn’t see that one coming… makes it hard to stop watching!

At least it catches your eye! But yeah… Pic of outfit:

When I watch them play St. Andrews, i wonder why they don’t break out the old mans club, the chipper. It would be a good club for those long chips they have to keep making.

Because a 7-iron can basically serve the same function.

I am happy that the weatherman whiffy-ed the weather forecast. Looks like the morning wave is getting the better of the conditions. But not by much.

I was going to pick McIlroy and Long John. What? You don’t believe me?

Fun leaderboard.
Weather supposed to get worse as the week goes on, so it might be tough for folk to make up too much ground.

I like Daly. Yeah, I know, I know, but he’s such a character that I always want to see him do well.

Not even close. The chipper has a 5 iron face and is shorter and more erect. Some of the Majors are begging for someone to break one out.

What the hell are those? I wouldn’t even have that pattern on a tie.

I just hope I get a chance to see some of it this weekend. The girls don’t like watching golf.

This table indicates a the current 7-iron loft is 34 deg.

This chipper from Adams Golf has 37 deg loft.

A pro is not going to waste one of his 14 clubs on a chipper. Especially when one of his clubs can basically do the same job.

Loud Mouth pants. Yes Loud Mouth.

The Norwegian Mens Olympic curling Team wore one of the styles in the Vancouver Games.

Daly wore the Pazeltine-A style today.

You are stating the 7 iron does the same job. I dispute that. You rarely see a pro chip with a 7 iron. But is some of these tournaments, a club or two never leave the bag. A chipper would not take away from the bag.
Most pro golfers have flatter lies on their clubs than we do. A pros 7 might be at 30 .

7 iron, 5 iron, hybrid.

Toh-MAY-toh
toh-MAH-toh.

Doesn’t matter. There is a club (with a loft) in a golfers bag that basically makes a “chipper” a redundant club.

Yes, a pro rarely uses all 14 clubs in his bag in a golf round. But in tomorrows round, he might need the three clubs that he didn’t use today.

A pro is not going to Monday Morning quarterback and say, “jeez, I didn’t use my 6-iron today, I should have had a chipper in my bag.”

He should so go with the Aloha Girls tomorrow. That is some of the ugliest stuff I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t so much I would think about some!

Tiger is in 8th ,4 back. That is a solid start. He bogied 17.

After 2 rounds my man Oosthuizen is looking like the real deal!

Looks like a good chance for a Brit to contend…
