The Order of the Stick

It was a brief aside but it looks like Eugene Greenhilt got his family skills from his father Horace. He mentions that Roy’s mother told him Roy was a fighter the last time he visited her and his grandson. Think about how long Roy’s been a fighter and you realize how often Horace visits his family. This might explain why Eugene Greenhilt was so angry with his father and hated fighters.

Well, he does have to come down from the third level of the mountain. Getting up and down the mountain isn’t an easy trip. Plus, what father would accidentally want to visit his daughter and find Enrique in her shower?

Roy has been a fighter for quite a while, yes–but his mother has only been dead for 3 years. If you assume that she mentioned Roy was a fighter the first time they met in Celestia, it would imply that he’s only visited once, and that that visit could have been as much as 3 years ago.

Eric’s enthusiastic recognition suggest that’s he’s been around more than that, though. I would guess that Roy’s class just didn’t come up on earlier visits.

She’s his daughter*-in-law*. Eugene is his son. And she apparently didn’t know Horace before his death since Horace is still surprised that Eugene was even interested in girls.

But Eric seems pretty excited to see Grandpa!!! so I’d guess that Horace has been down the mountain often enough. Maybe Eric stayed with Horace as his nearest relative when he got to the mountain.

This is why I love the Dope! We’re actually discussing the administration of child welfare and guardianship on Mount Celestia…

I have to ask now. In the last strip before the hiatus, the villainous daimyo Kabuto speaks to an unseen character whose speech bubbles are black with red text.

Do we have any idea who that is?

I think this is the closest thing we’ve seen so far.

An interesting development in today’s strip (#498). Durkon’s probably been trying to raise Roy and he’s been unknowingly ignoring the call like Eric and Shojo did. I’m now guessing the 500th strip will be Roy’s dramatic resurrection from Durkon’s last attempt and he’ll return into the middle of some dark situation that the rest of the Order has gotten into during his absense. The next story arc will be a flashback covering their adventures during his death.

I don’t think Durkon’s been able to try to raise Roy at all.

I’m with E-Sabbath. Did Haley and Belkar ever reunite with Durkon and Elan? And more importantly, just how much is Roy stinking up the place after 3 months?

Man, if I was on an underwater adventure and summoned monster only to get a tiny celestial swordfish, I would be reeeealy annoyed. Like, I’d have to get a t-shirt that said “I summoned monster and all I got was this lousy fish,” or something.

How about, “I killed a PC and all I got was this lousy t-shirt?”

Well, I’m going to have file that under “Didn’t See That One Coming”…

New OotS and only one more to go before the big 500!

Well, it was a pretty elaborate block house.

And it’s a double-length one, so I expect he’s going to keep us waiting.

I was thinking the opposite - that he’s planning on a big strip for the 500th and has been doubling up on some recent strips in order to hit the mark.

It occurs to me that

if it took him 8-weeks to climb the mountain, and now he’s back down, that there’s probably another month or two lost right there.

So presumably 500 is going to involve him looking down and seeing… what?

Nah. Going downhill is faster.

Especially since he’s going to be in a much bigger hurry (and isn’t limited by physical exhaustion or injuries).
