The Order of the Stick

That was quick.

Well I didn’t see this coming: OOTS #500.

ETA:

Then again, it might not be who I think it is. But if all that time has passed …

Get on with it already!

I’ll admit I was expecting more.

Same here.

Daimyo and Kazumi?

Yeah, not quite the impact I expected. The build-up was fine, but the payoff says nothing at all. Someone’s getting married, big deal. For all we know Durkon is just wedding two anonymous NPCs - which was actually my assumption.

That would be Daigo and Kazumi

If Eugene’s actions as an oath-spirit count at all for where he goes in the afterlife, I think he’s gonna be chucked into the True Neutral bin.

Eh, I guess the Outlands isn’t that bad. He could visit Sigil.

Well, let’s see where we are:

1. Durkon is still at sea
2. The two OotS members who immediately come to mind might not have had the chance to reunite, leaving Roy’s body separated from Durkon
3. Going back to #1, Durkon may not have had a chance to get the pricey components necessary to cast his spell
I was hoping for more of a payoff myself. #500 limped in without much of a bang.

We probably should have known not to expect something special for a big-number episode.

And depending on what level Durkon actually is, he might not be able to cast the spell he needs to bring back Roy – they’re beyond the time-frame for raise dead (5th-level); he needs resurrection (7th-level), and even more diamonds.

I don’t think it’s such a bad strip (#500.) It does provide as much resolution to Roy and his father’s differences as I think we can ever reasonably expect, and it brings the action back to the Material Plane and with the rest of The Order.

Besides, did Burlew ever let on that something big was going to happen in this one?

I never noticed before, but Rich lives somewhere near me (Queens, NY). Maybe I should go and hit him with a cattle prod a few times to speed things up. [em]evil smile[/em]

Belkar and Vaarsuvius were my first guess too.

Even in the 100th strip, Burlew was made a joke about the fact he hadn’t done anything special. (I think he later admitted he hadn’t been paying much attention to the pacing of the strips in their early days.) But the 200th strip was a big three-strip fight, the first appearance of Miko Miyazaki, and Roy’s apparent death. The 300th strip was Xykon and Redcloak launching the attack on Azure City - a huge story arc. And the 400th strip was Elan and Haley finally hooking up.

Admittedly, we may see this strip as a huge milestone in retrospect. Maybe the off-screen wedding will drive the plot for the next hundred issues. But at the moment, it seems rather flat - another argument between Roy and his father with the only difference being that Roy’s finally realizing how pointless these arguments are.

Good call to whoever guessed Daigo and Kazumi.

Now, the next question is…

What’s with Elan’s eyepatch?

…and the big, anticlimactic reveal here.

The big question is: What’s up with Elan’s eyepatch?

I suspect that ninja are to blame.

Also: they’re drinking blue wine, which is a nice touch.

The subtler big question is:Where’s Vaarsuvius?

Re: the spoiler text, note that it happened somewhere between the second and third panels in the backstory explanation. I’m betting that they got attacked in between ports.

I don’t get the part about …

saving Daigo’s surname, “just in case”
