The Orville Season 2

Oh, true. Weird.

Ugh, Troi. She and Riker were why I bailed on the show as a teenager when it first came out. Cheesy, tasteless (I was a snooty young lad, sue me).

While I doubt they had a strong desire to change out her costume to other clothes, I also don’t think it would have been a good idea. The point of her arc was her not accepting being human like the others. She was free to wear what she wanted to wear (and was not any rank of Star Fleet or Marquis to wear a uniform, not above or below anyone) and continuing to wear the same clothing was both emphasizing her difference from the others and not accepting having to make choices about human costuming.

To some degree her outfit served the same function to the viewer as did Data’s skin color. Of course Data could have had perfectly human skin complexion. It was off to emphasize his not actually being human. Seven’s outfit was that reminder as well. Moving to other choices would have demonstrated an acceptance by her of her humanity … and with it vulnerability that she was also not ready to accept.

As much hate as Voyager sometimes gets, the Seven level of character development is something lacking in Orville so far. Issac’s arc just doesn’t deliver it. The most interesting character arcs do not have to involve the theme of conflict between accepting, rejecting, or desiring human values and/or identity over something more alien … but it is interesting that it usually has.

I’m also skeptical that any of these actors have the chops to deliver it if it was written for it.

It’s not obvious to me, so please explain the connection between her divorce and the Obama presidency.

I like your take on it. Gives me something to think about.

Obama presumably doesn’t become — or even run for — president in ‘08 if he isn’t yet partway through his first Senate term. In ‘04, Obama runs for that Senate seat, which a Republican was stepping down from; the idea is to run against a Republican who’d gone “to Dartmouth College, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, and his JD from Harvard Law School, with honors. After this, he worked at Casa Juan Diego, a refugee camp for Latinos fleeing the Central American civil wars. He worked for Goldman Sachs as an investment banker and eventual partner, first in New York City, and then in the Chicago branch. In 2000, after Goldman Sachs went public, Ryan’s net worth was in the tens of millions. He retired from Goldman as a partner and taught for three years at a Bronzeville, Chicago, parochial school, Hales Franciscan High School. He left his teaching position to run for the Senate in 2004.”

But then that Republican all of a sudden had to drop out of the race: “Jeri Ryan alleged that Jack Ryan had wanted her to perform sexual acts with him in public in sex clubs in New York City, New Orleans, and Paris, although no sex occurred. Jeri Ryan described one as “a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling.” The decision to release these files generated much controversy because it went against both parents’ direct request, and because it reversed the earlier decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child”.

Her divorce set the stage for her ex husbands creepiness to come out during the Senate campaign of Ryan v Obama (when married he had been trying to pressure her to go to sex clubs with him and to coerce her to have sex in front of others) and helped assure Obama’s election to the Senate. Jack Ryan ended up dropping out of the race as a result. Mind you Obama was already in the lead but who knows how the alternate history would have played out …

ETA ninja’ed but what the hey

Thanks to both of you. I didn’t remember that Senate race, although perhaps that’s because I don’t pay attention to Illinois politics.

While we’re on the subject, it should be noted that Jeri Ryan never publicly accused Jack Ryan of anything. She made her allegations in a closed hearing, which were put into what was supposed to be a sealed court document. The Chicago Tribune and WLS-TV got a court order to have the sealed records released. Both Jack and Jeri Ryan fought against making the records public.

Obama would have been elected even if he were a drooling vegetable in a wheelchair. The Democrats knew exactly what they were doing when they nominated him.

I beg your pardon?

I just finished watching “Lasting Impressions.” The biggest surprise for me was recognizing that song from The Last Unicorn. It took me a bit to place it.

I seriously doubt there was an “arc” to their clothes. They were eye candy. If they could have worked Barbara Eden’s genie outfit into the series they would have done it in a New York minute.

[Moderating]

I haven’t read this whole thread, and I haven’t watched The Orville, but I assume that talk of Star Trek: Voyager and Seven of Nine is at least tangentially related to the topic. Obama, however, is not. Keep the politics to the political forums.

Question:

Is the entire bridge a green room? Are the actors just sitting on green furniture and the entire set is cg?

JAQ, that was very on-brand!

(I don’t know the answer; I’d be surprised–but not shocked–if that were true.)

The bridge is used often enough that I imagine it’s a real set that actually looks as it appears. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the faces of the monitors and control panels on the bridge are green-screened, though.

This article, posted before the show first aired, includes photos of the bridge set. (It also includes some details about it. For example, “When it comes to Orville science, they are paying attention to the little things, such as how the wall paneling on the ship is supposed to be a form of plant life that acts as CO² scrubber.” And it mentions that the design of the ship is based on the scientific theory behind the FTL propulsion system.

Interesting article - thanks, DF!

Neat!

Yes, DF, good article! Thanks for sharing!
