I’ve been rooting for you guys all along, and it makes my heart ache to hear that he’s gone.
His condition might have been fatal immediately, though… in another time or place. And you guys had an extra year together, so that’s something. It’s terrible and unfair that he lost his fight after you two waged such a battle together.

You’ve been on alert and focused on helping him for so long that it’s not surprising that it feels like this happened because you dropped your guard. Don’t worry about having that feeling, just remember that it’s not an accurate assessment of facts, it’s the voice of the part of you that’s still trying to help him.
