The :p smiley is crap

:stuck_out_tongue:

It doesn’t look like someone sticking their tongue out. It looks like someone smirking, because the tongue is too short and doesn’t have the distinctive cartoony dividing line in it.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I suggest we update it. I’ll volunteer to do it if ye’ll let me.

:stuck_out_tongue:

All those in favour say “aye”.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I agree. Someone ( Una, I think) used it in a reply to me, and I had to go to the reply screen to check what emotion was being conveyed.

I also agree. Looks too much like a goofy grin.

It needs some scowling eyebrows: ** \ /**

instead of goofy eyebrows */ *

Aye.

The tongue should be off to the side, just like the emoticon suggests. This would make it easier to discern:

:stuck_out_tongue:

And why do we have a blowjob smiley :o for embarrassment?

 & are way too similar in appearance.

I like these two: ;j :dubious:

 You mean you want us to have to learn MORE smilies? I have enough trouble keeping them straight as it is. :smack:

And I haven’t even used :wally yet.

And what is wrong with a goofy grin :stuck_out_tongue: smilie? It’s different, to me, anyway, than the big grin/laughing smilie

But a sticking out tongue smilie that was more like the Rolling Stones’ logo – yeh, that could be fun. I’d vote for keeping :stuck_out_tongue: in the menagerie, though.

The smackie smilie and Mr. Dubious are contributions by SDMB participants.

I will note that :smack: substitutes well for :o and :dubious: substitutes for  .

I myself have a proposed icon that substitutes for Mr. Winky, whom I find a little corny. I call it, “:bemused:”

I would recommend that designers of these icons keep in mind that their ultimate purpose is to soften the written word, and not agitate the reader. IMHO of course.

In the past, Arnold has run contests for new SDMB smilies. Let’s have another!

Hm. While we’re at it, we could have a retirement contest. Maybe :o could be given a dignified burial. {Or perhaps not: retiring it might make the interpretation of previous threads slightly onerous.}

aye

Change Mr :stuck_out_tongue: ??? I’ve used him many a time… but I do admit he looks a tad more friendly than when I use :stuck_out_tongue: in e-mail and such.

OTOH, it would subtly change the meanings of all previous posts should he change!

A green scowling face with the tongue out would bear too much resemblance to Mr. Yuk

I agree. And for all those worried about having too many smileys, I suggest we make a ritual sacrifice of the rolleyes one. Lor’ how I loathe that refuge of the bitter-but-too-thick-to-be-snarky, especially when it compromises the entire post.

But yeah, I can visualise what jjimm has in mind with the classic cartoony tongue. It’d be much better.

:stuck_out_tongue: <— Looks like he’s having a little too much fun.

TheLoadedDog:

Oh, and “one picture is worth a thousand words”.

The problem is that in color coding the smileys (blue, green, etc…), the coloring is way too dark. The black lines on dark colors just doesn’t show up. More contrast is needed and is easy to do simply by lightening up the colors.

Oh, pastels, won’t you save our smileys?

mr tongue stickie-outie is ok. :stuck_out_tongue:
mr blowjob is erm… :o
how do one use mr cool? and mr spiderman?
mr putz just messes up the spacing.
