The Peanut Butter Sandwich: theme and variations

I use whole wheat bread, something with authority. Then crunchy pnut butter, and gourmet blueberry jam. I guess I am a bit of a old fashioned guy here.

Mmmm you guys made me remember Amish Peanut Butter. For some reason the Amish are nuts (pun!) about peanut butter mixed with marshmallow and maple syrup.

They have it on the table at Amish restaurants, and they give you a basket of bread or rolls, and you can just HEAP THAT STUFF ON and nobody judges you, cuz they’ll make more.

I only had it when I visited my grandparents in Amish country, so several times a year. I never bought any or made any because having it at home would be bad news.

I just eat peanut butter straight from the jar (the natural, sugar free kind).

I only really eat pb sandwiches neat but on a dare I ate one with applesauce. Not much different than pbj, but I don’t like those either.
My Dad and Brother both ate toasted bagel with peanut butter and a slice of kraft singles cheese,
which would be atop their scrambled eggs, so a little bit of pj would drip through the hole.

By “chopped pickle” you mean a cucumber marinated with dill and/or garlic? And not the tangy brown condiment filled with chopped root veg?

I’ve never had PB with a pickle, but now I’m tempted to try PB with pickle. (The former being countable, and the latter being uncountable.)

I think I had a PB and mayo sandwich once, back around sixth grade. I remember it being okay, but nothing I’d pig out on.

PB and bacon is delicious. I love the smoke and salt that mingle with the roasted flavor of the nuts.

PB and banana is good too, but I haven’t had it in ages. Before I became dentally challenged, I used to spread PB liberally on apples, a wonderful combination I sorely miss.

A long, long time ago, I had some friends who filled stalks of celery with PB. It was one of their special treats.

I’ve yet to try a jam or jelly that doesn’t go well with PB, but I seem to use more strawberry and grape than any other.

I prefer white bread for PB sandwiches, but not the spongy Wonder variety. Storebought French and Italian, or my own homemade white. Toasted English muffins make a good snack or breakfast choice.

I love PB and pickles, but agree - it sounds incredibly odd. I am not sure why I tried it in the first place. Someone suggested it to me, apparently. I guess where food is concerned I have a very open mind.

Marmite very recently ceased production of Marmite Peanut Butter, which has left more than a few people disappointed. (I had a link to a news story about it, but I can’t seem to link to it, for some reason.)

I never bought it myself, because I already have both on hand

I am assume it means regular vinegar or fermented pickles. It was from the early 1940s, is dedicated to Douglas MacArthur, and in some recipes is as nonspecific as “get a beef.” I’m not sure if it is the same old cookbook that refers to “spaghetti” as a delightful ethnic food, with it being from an Axis power and all.

I tried it this morning. A thin film of white miso topped with peanut butter on toast. The PB dominated, and the taste of the miso was barely noticeable. But the saltiness of the miso came through loud and clear. I don’t consider this a successful experiment. Maybe if I had added jam or jelly to counteract the saltiness? May experiment further if I can get a gummint grant to do so.

As you know, Branston Pickle is NOT what Americans mean when they say pickles or a pickle. I’ll bet a lot of Americans have never heard of Branston. It’s not likely to be found on the shelves of regular grocery stores. Although you might find chutney in the “international section.”

But I know that in the British detective series Endeavour, it is in the sandwich (along with cheese) that Win Thursday puts in her husband Fred’s lunch bag every Monday. Like clockwork.

This is pretty good. To me it’s a bit of an improvement over just eating PB from a spoon, as the celery is cool and crunchy and lightens the density and clinginess of the peanut butter. Similar to (mentioned above) spreading PB on apple slices.

I’m another proponent of the toasted peanut butter and banana sandwich.

Drizzle honey, or add a layer of marshmallow fluff, if you want to go decadent.

There was a post a couple of years ago that told of ordering a cheese sandwich in Britain and the barista asking “Would you like pickle on that?” Of course, the orderer, being a colonial, had no idea what she was talking about and said “Yes, please.” He was evidently expecting something like a Kraft single and a spear of Vlasik’s and thought he’d been had.

FTR, Cheddar cheese and Branston pickle on a bap (a soft bun) is a delightful pub treat!

There was a discussion of the British cheese and pickle phenomenon a couple of years ago.

When I was living in England, I had one every other day, along with a white coffee.

The barista was a hot New Zealander. She finally asked me why I kept coming there, and I told her “Because of the sandwiches, of course.”

Wink-wink!

I presume “white coffee” is “coffee with milk”? Or is “white coffee” when made by a New Zealander actually a “flat white”?

Yep, a lot of milk. With froth on top.

I eventually got a date with the barista. As I recall, we went to see Hedda, with Glenda Jackson.

I love this question! I’ve been experimenting with PB sandwiches my whole life, and I do think that I have found my absolute favorite. First, I toast the bread… preferable something white, softish. Then I spread a thin layer of butter on the toasted slices. I then apply peanut butter to one side, lots… I poke little holes in the PB to better hold the honey that I spoon on top of that. I put the other slice of toast on and YUM! The warm toast and butter kind of carmelize the honey, somehow making it a delicious concoction, lol. I eat it right away or pack it for the beach to eat later, or even refrigerate it. You have to try!

Mr. Rilch and I just got back from vacation, where we visited a shop that has only peanut butter, in various flavors, and a few peanut products. Right now I’m working my way through a jar of Honey Roasted. I mix about a quarter cup of PB with a tablespoon of jam or jelly, making a spread that won’t ooze jam when I bite into the sandwich.

We also got a jar of chocolate peanut butter. That goes best on graham crackers. Add a dab of marshmallow fluff, and you’ve got an indoor S’more!
