The Peanut Butter Sandwich: theme and variations

What an auspicious first post-- welcome aboard!

:open_mouth: I want to go to that place.

Thank you so much lol- I am so excited to have stumbled upon this oasis of sanity and civility I can’t even tell you…

Has anyone tried any of the new dark-roasted peanut butters? I think Whole Foods carries one. Amazon, too. Pretty pricey, but it seems worth a try.

For me, it’s an incredibly logical combination. The richness of peanut butter calls out for some acidity to cut it with. I know we’re conditioned as Americans to associate sweet with peanut butter, but I figured out early on as a kid that pickles go great with it. It’s no surprise to me that the combo goes very far back. To be honest, peanut butter and mayo sounds much weirder to me, and that’s been a thing for a long time, too. Like it has the acidity, but there’s no need to add more fat to the equation, in my opinion. Mayo is for stuff that is lean and needs additional fat.

I also like pickled jalapeños with peanut butter.

Yeah, well, there’s one tent in the oasis you probably want to stay far away from.

Oh, come on, the Marketplace isn’t that bad.

Now, now, let’s not scare the newby.

Yum. Now that is on my must-try list.

See if you can find these at the grocery store. Not from amazon – too expensive.

Trappey’s Sweet n’ Hot Jalapeno Slices are awesome on nachos or salads. Also try on hamburgers or sandwiches or pour over a block of cream cheese.

Trader Joe’s version is probably pretty close to the same thing. Only $3.29 (in-store price)

It’s been mentioned in a few variations here, but I love a grilled peanut butter, bacon & banana sandwich. I haven’t made one in ages, but so good! You get the crispness from the bacon & bread. Then there’s the sweetness from the bananas. Add in the saltiness of the bacon, and for me, the textures all come together. Yum!

I’m fond of peanut butter (crunchy preferred) and orange marmalade sandwiches. I like what the mild bitterness of the marmalade brings to the party.

I’m a fan or marmalade, which seems to be one of those bimodal foods: lots of people like it, lots of people dislike it, and there’s only a small number who can take it or leave it.

This sounds pretty good, but I was going to come in to recommend a savory PB sandwich (sans hot dog). Just PB and sriracha on your favorite bread/toast. Kind of gives the vibe of an Asian spicy peanut sauce noodle. We only use “natural” PB (no added sugar), so this is a good solution for people avoiding overly sweet variants.

I will also advocate for tahini as a substitute for PB in almost any situation. Use a high quality source, like Soom Foods. The nutritional info on plain tahini is virtually identical to unsweetened PB, only with more iron. Like natural PB, it’s best to dump the whole jar into a storage bowl, stir in the separated oil, and refrigerate to make it less liquid. Good with jam, sriracha, or chocolate (Soom Foods makes to-die-for chocolate tahini spreads that are infinitely better than Nutella).

oh god of course there is- tell me!

The BBQ Pit is where all civility goes to die.

Sometimes an oasis turns out to be a mirage. Don’t pet the camels, by the way.

When I was a kid, my favorite, once-in-a-while treat of a sandwich was cream cheese with salted peanuts on white bread, smooshed together so it looked lumpy from the peanuts. So a variant on that is cream cheese and peanut butter - same yummy taste, no lumpies, tho the lumpies did get me some interesting looks in the school lunch room. And while white bread is good, multi-grain is better.

The other kids thought your mom had given you a sandwich made out of June bugs? I would guess that made you the envy of everyone.

No, mostly they thought it was weird. But I knew how epic it was!!

this is such a cute answer, I love how you squished the bread so that it was lumpy
