OK, I’m finally getting psyched for Pennsic. So are there any Dopers going? We could have a Medieval Dopefest.

Ahh… Pennsic.
Unfortunatly, I shall not be attending again this year and it will probably be another three or four until I make it back because of school.
But enjoy yourself and raise a goblet of wine for me.
I hate you all… you miserable bastards.
It’s probably going to be several years until I can get out to Pennsic, and right now I’m working on finishing my new armor and getting a pavillion.
Neither of you would have a spare pavillion for sale cheap, would you…???

Being all Caidian now, I’m going to rent a pavillion - $200 for 2 weeks. Maybe I’ll buy one for next year.

Natty natty boo-boo!

And had a damn good time too! I met the King of An Tir (nice man) and received a necklace and a box of cookies for doing some scrolls for him.
::adds another Kingdom to her apprentice belt scroll list::
Wow, I have not been to Pennsic since '91. Personally I am trying to get to the Known World Heraldic Symposium in Minnesota in early June. That’s my goal right now.
But ah, Pennnsic - dust, rain, dirt, heat, bugs, storms and the Giant Eagle. But the fighting and fencing and shopping and other stuff make up for it.
Damn, I miss it!
BTW, anyone know where I can get a copy of the Known World song book? I ordered a copy, but never received it.
Pennsic. Never have been able to make it so far. Would like to, but something always seems to come up. Darn it. Anyone planning on being at Potrero?
TristanWhat do you consider cheap? There’s someone here in Ansteorra that makes period pavilions (or was). I can ask him about it if you want.
screech-owlI’ve attended a couple of Known World Heraldic Symposiums. I loved being a herald, but man, that’s such a concentration of art critics.
“What is that supposed to be on this submission that’s been in the system for a year? A bear?”
“Yes.” :: flips through several heraldry books and shows person :: “See, it’s drawn in the period style.”
“Well, it looks like a wolfhound to me. Send it back.”
“M’Lady, if your wolfhound looks like that, may I suggest you get thee to a vet.”
Frustrating. Very frustrating. Almost as bad as the fruitcake I had who wanted to register a name and device for her TEDDY BEAR! Grown woman. I swear.
Is it any wonder I opted for the much less nerve wracking Illumination and Court Heraldry path?
We’re probably going to Pennsic this year, but it involves money and paperwork and stuff, so I dunno. Might not happen.
KWHS should be fun; it’s being run by some extremely competent people who understand how things work. It’ll be right next door to the Mall of America (woo hoo), and they’re planning a field trip to some monastic library to look at scrolls.

The herald’s tent at GW was a hoot. We had a hard time finding a picture of a heraldic beaver.
Imagine a bunch of heralds bandying the word ‘beaver’ indiscriminately about the tent, and the confused and embarrassed looks of some of the clients.
“I need a beaver.”
“Anyone got a picture of a beaver?”
“Got beaver?”
And those things are weird-looking – dey gots long legs and FANGS!
Heloise what, when and where is Potrero?
My mum and her SO are coming up specifically for the War, but I haven’t decided whether or not I wish to join them (I’ve nev-ah done the SCA thing). Any pointers?

I’d say you should start by finding your local branch (you should be able to find lists at the SCA main page), and see if there is a local meeting you can go to, or a small local event. There should be people who can get you set up with loaner garb or help you make/improvise something to wear, and give you pointers on what to do in the SCA. The main page has links to tons of helpful stuff out there on how to get started.
I strongly advise you NOT to go to Pennsic as your first event.
Whereabouts are you located?
Ethilrist, thanks for the link. I guess I don’t really have the time commitment to be completely submersed in the SCA, but my mum was interested in having me come to see her and her boyfriend do their thing. I have kinda mixed feelings b/c it’s not something I’m actively involved in.
I live to the northeast of Pittsburgh, btw.
I’ll be there for a week. Haven’t been to Pennsic since my first time, in 1991.
I’ll be at the Know World Dance Symposium in June too.

You know what? If you live that close to Pittsburgh (it’s in between Butler and New Castle in Slippery Rock in Butler County) and you don’t intend to get involved in the SCA, do Pennsic. The reason many people say don’t is because by comparison, every other event sucks.
If anyone needs to find me, I run the Blue Feather encampment and I host the Blue Feather Ball.

**xtal[/x] - We’re neighbors! I’m a cynaguan myself… but we can’t all be perfect! hehehehe… if you’re at Beltane, mayhaps I’ll look you up, we can tip a bottle together or something!
alright, I’ll bite - what’s pennsic?
Pennsic war is one of the larger wars fought in the SCA… it happens once a year, and folks come from all over the country to do it. Duke Sir Cariodoc of the Bow hosts an area that is not allowed to have anything that isn’t medieval at all… it is my grail once I’m fighting again, but it’s gonna be a few years…
Cheap pavillion, probably used, I’m hoping to find a 10 or 15’ round for around $300-$400… I’ve got a friend out here in West that does them, but I can’t afford the $900 she would charge me… sigh
Yikes! That’s 'spensive, Tristian!
Just to be clear, are you talking pavilion for the list field or period tent? It’s been awhile since I talked to him, but I remember Mark’s stuff being way cheaper than $900.00.
You left off the part about the prize for winning/losing Pennsic, or are they still doing that?
So I click on this thread, and I don’t have the faintest idea what any of you are talking about.
It’s like that dream, where you go to school, but forgot to put your pants on that morning.
Or, forgetting that you quit the day before, and showing up at work.
I’ll just stand in a corner and see if I can pick up the gist.
