I wanted to let the Dopers know about my schedule for the next few weeks.

My temporary assignment is coming to an end July 28 (perhaps a couple days past that) - they finally hired someone permanently for my position. (No biggie - hated the job, really, although I loved my co-workers and boss, but certainly didn’t want to apply to do this job for any considerable length of time. Still, it afforded me enough time to get up over 2300 posts in six months… ;))

The timing, actually, is pretty keen, as I leave for the Pennsic War the following Friday, August 4. (For those who don’t know, it’s an SCA {Society for Creative Anachronism} Medieval/Renaissance camping event that happens for two weeks in August every year near Pittsburgh, PA, and this is my tenth year going.) So I get a couple days to get ready, which is ok (although I’d prefer working and getting the money). I will return August 20.

That leaves about 3 weeks without having access to a computer (well, I could from home before I leave, but my computer and access are painfully slow). I will therefore be entrusting the AtGG thread to my queer associates (you know who you are), who are more than capable of fielding questions as they arise. (Be nice to the straights - they can’t help themselves… ;))

Upon my return I will no doubt be garnering another long-term temp assignment with the same company, as they love me and don’t want me to leave (and they have quite a lot of positions that need filling right now). I will of course get right back in contact when I get real access again (and hopefully the new job will afford me time enough to push in another 2000 posts before 2001 rolls around).

I’ll be around for the next 2 weeks, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Esprix, I’m curious. What does a midevil queer dress like? Do you carry a sword and wear one of those big pointy hats with a hankerchief on it? Or armor with a flap in the back like Dennis the Menace’s pajamas? :D( if you can’t tell I’m teasing you, than you don’t know me as well as I thought )

HEY! I live near Pittsburgh! How come I never hear of these things? The closest I’ve been to going to a Ren Faire type ordeal was last year when my friend said that I could go to Ren Faire with him, but my mother wouldn’t allow since it was all guys going. And this year he mentioned going to Ren Faire again and didn’t even bring up inviting me! I want to go! pout

Out of curiosity Esprix, where do you guys camp at? And congrats on spelling Pittsburgh correctly, basically everyone on the net who hasn’t lived here spells it wrong.

Well duh. :stuck_out_tongue: How does a Medieval queer dress? Fabulously, of course. :wink: Seriously, period personas are many and varied. I’ve seen Greco-Romans, Egyptians, peasants (T-tunics, “peasant shirts” and the like), Renaissance (mostly Italian, meaning tights, codpieces and dublets), Tudor (think Henry VIII), Persian, Japanese, everything up to 1600, and then we throw in the year 1650 so people can go all FOPish if they want (think Three Musketeers period).

Are you familiar with the SCA? We’re not a Ren Faire - those are public accommodations put on for the masses. We, however, are not exactly a members-only club, but we do not advertise to the public, and we do not “put on a show” for the public. Although anyone is invited to attend, in order to know when and where things are happening you have to either have a friend in the Society or be a member and subscribe to the newsletters. And when you come, you don’t stand around and watch other people perform for you - you are required to dress in appropriate garb, and join in (it’s basically a big social camping trip in funny clothes, with some pageantry, shopping and fighting thrown in for good measure; we do our research, but it’s for our own edification and education, not necessarily to put on a show with). The Ren Faire is a very, very different feel from the SCA.

The 29th annual Pennsic War takes place at Cooper’s Lake Campground, which is right near the intersection of I-79 and I-422 between Butler and New Castle, Pennsylvania (about 45 minutes to an hour north of Pittsburgh).

It’s official - my last day at work will be this Friday, July 28. I will only have sporadic (and deathly slow) internet access before I leave the following Friday, August 4.

Today’s my last day (I leave in like two and a half hours). Next week will be sporadic, if at all, and then I’m off to be all Medieval for 16 days.

Good news, though - another temp position opened up in this same department, and they specifically asked for me. (For the skills I acquired here that are department-specific, but I’m going to kid myself and believe it’s because of my wit, charm and indispensible personality. :D) They’re going to have one temp come in for the next three weeks, but I’m going to take over when I get back. It’s for someone who is out on maternity leave, so it would expire the beginning of November, but I fully expect to be in San Diego by then. Plus, I get a raise. :slight_smile:

Y’all better miss me! (Believe it or not, I’m really going to miss you guys. :()
